Today's lineup

The S-T blog has today's lineup up.  Andruw Jones is hitting cleanup, Marlon Byrd is in the lineup, and Kris Benson and Eddie Guardado are both scratches because of back stiffness.

Did someone say Benson?

And the quote:

MY

Ron Washington will realize MY shouldn’t be batting third the day after he gets fired.

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

by RangerMad on Mar 2, 2009 1:16 PM CST reply actions

Sarcastic?

May have something to do with the normal 3 hole hitter being held out of this game.

I think RW makes some pretty dumb moves and should get fired if another slow start takes place but this is kind of reaching for straws.

However you could be sarcastic in saying this.

by bioaggie on Mar 2, 2009 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

No

I think Ron realizes that his team must not stumble fall flat on thier face coming out of the gate this spring. I believe he is trying to put as many realistic lineups as possible out there everyday. It is his intention to bat MY 3rd whenever Hamilton is not in the lineup not matter the consequences.

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

by RangerMad on Mar 2, 2009 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

I believe

and many on here might disagree with me, is that if MY is the 2 hole hitter, let him hit 2 hole in the spring. It’s not a real game so who cares if your 3 hole hitter today isn’t very good. Let Vizquel hit there since he is the non-regular in the lineup. I want guys getting as many at bats in the spots they will hit as possible. Just my opinion, but it seems like Ron is juggling the lineup trying to win instead of getting ready for April. Maybe that’s why we suck every year in April.

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Mar 2, 2009 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Young isn't a rookie

He knows how to hit in the 2 hole. Hitting there only sparingly in this spring training isn’t going to make him freak out once the season starts and become a .260 hitter.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Mar 2, 2009 6:17 PM CST up reply actions

Okay

I realize that. But hitting 2 hole and hitting 3 hole are way different approaches. I remember an interview with Rusty Greer that I always come back to when he said the best thing about playing for Johnny Oates was that you knew everyday where you were going to be in the lineup. I just don’t think it’s beneficial to move a 2 hole hitter to 3 hole to make your lineup better for a spring game.

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Mar 2, 2009 6:37 PM CST up reply actions

Seriously, are you 12?

It’s what, the 5th fucking ST game, and you are bitching about what spot in the order MY hits? And the manager is juggling the lineup to win games????

by Rodney on Mar 2, 2009 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

Again, Young isn't a rookie

Hes a veteran who has plenty of experience hitting in the 2 hole. I highly doubt a handful of spring training games hitting 3rd or 4th or 5th is going to screw him up enough to make a difference. Its spring training. He can go up there with the approach of a 2 hole hitter no matter where in the lineup he is. You are seriously overreacting to this.

A's sign Cabrera

via rotoworld

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Tim Brown, the A’s and Orlando Cabrera have agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract.
Such a steal. The A’s will owe Cabrera less than the Royals will be paying Kyle Farnsworth this season. His addition means that Bobby Crosby will be thrust into a backup role, barring a trade. It’d make an awful lot of sense for the Padres to go get Crosby if the A’s would eat the majority of his salary.

by octoberty on Mar 2, 2009 1:58 PM CST reply actions

well we can hardly be expected

to compete against the “have’s” of the world like the Royals and A’s. We can only gaze upon their FA crop and mumble “must be nice…”

by clark on Mar 2, 2009 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

I would take

Holliday, who they traded for. Cabrera and Giambi they can keep based on what we have. Royals got Willie Bloomquist and Juan Cruz. Again, not that upset. If I missed somebody, than I apologize.

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Mar 2, 2009 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

it isn't a matter

of who they spent it on, but rather what they spent. the Royals blew 4.5M this year on Kyle Farnsworth. A smarter GM like Daniels could have parlayed that into Cruz and a lefty like Beimel or Ohman this offseason.

by clark on Mar 2, 2009 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

and even smarter one would have left cruz alone

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 2, 2009 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

first of all

thanks for the good conversation last night on yesterday’s game day thread.

but as for Cruz, what do you have against him. I think that was a pretty solid investment of about 2M per year in a potentially dominant reliever.

by clark on Mar 2, 2009 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

but

do those acquistions make the team that much better. We all want to see the young kids play until someone else signs a journeyman and than we complain. Would Beimel or Ohman helped in the big picture? Probably not

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Mar 2, 2009 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

i am not a fan

of investing large amounts of money on relievers, but with the starting rotation this team is running out, this team needs to field as solid bullpen as it possibly can. there is not a loogy on our team as effective as ohman, and only one or two guys with arms as live as Cruz’s.

by clark on Mar 2, 2009 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

Relief pitchers

are a dime a dozen in my opinion. Showalter once said average relievers are good every other year, the special ones are pretty good every year. To me, that is just too much of a risk for a guy who will appear in maybe 1/3 of your team’s games.

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Mar 2, 2009 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

when you can sign a guy that would likely be the best or second best arm in the pen for a couple million bucks, it sucks to not be able to afford it.

I think the conventional wisdom of “relievers aren’t stable enough year-to-year to warrant a big chunk of the budget” pendulum has swung too far in one direction. It’s generally sound, but when you are passing by on overpowering guys like Cruz, while counting on spares like Eyre, Rupe, etc, then you have gone too far..

Doctor please. Some more of these.

by tricer on Mar 2, 2009 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

i just don't see cruz as overpowering

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 2, 2009 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

the main

perk of signing Cruz would be to try and flip him at the deadline for prospects in my opinion. I think the Royals will be looking to do that.

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Mar 2, 2009 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

why do you say that?

if he is an effective reliever for us, isn’t that a perk as well? that is like saying bradley wasn’t a good signing because the main perk would have been flipping him at the deadline and we failed to do that. any signing that improves our team’s W/L is a good signing, and if we do fall out of contention despite his performance and we can flip him for prospects, all the better.

by clark on Mar 2, 2009 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

major league hitters beg to differ

He has K-rates in excess of 12 per 9 the last two seasons and has an average FB velocity of 94+ mph.

What do you consider overpowering? 15 k/9 and 97 mph?

Doctor please. Some more of these.

by tricer on Mar 2, 2009 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

His walk rate is also up to almost 6 per 9 innings

I don’t know if that translates well to the AL

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Mar 2, 2009 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

then

do you see any of our current stable of pitchers as overpowering? or are you reserving that title for the likes of Rivera and K-Rod?

by clark on Mar 2, 2009 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

i mean

his peripherals aren’t staggering. WHIP of 1.2 – 1.3. Kind of a high walk rate. He did have a high K rate last year but not so dominating the year before.

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 2, 2009 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

correction

not so dominating 2 years ago – which doesn’t really factor into it i guess. i’ll concede the high k rate.

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 2, 2009 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

any argument against

signing relievers is negated by the fact that you can get very good ones for 1/2 price or less this off-season. Cruz was a great value for what he signed for whatever qualms you have vs his control. His ridiculously low h/9 and high so/9 make him a commodity for any team.

by Goyogringo on Mar 2, 2009 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

why would that not happen next offseason?

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 2, 2009 3:36 PM CST up reply actions

Offseason pitching targets' early ST numbers

just for fun, i took a look at the extremely-small-sample-sized performances-to-date for some names that were often bantered about during the offseason.

Masterson: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 0 ER
Bard: 2 IP, 0 baserunners, 2 Ks, 0 ER
Bowden: 1.2 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 0 K and 4 ER
Buchholz: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 ER
A guy I would have been very meh about, Hansack: 2 IP, 0 baserunners, 4K and 0 ER
And lastly, Homer Bailey: 4 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks, and 0 ER

Please don’t take this as crying over spilled milk. Our catchers have obviously performed well to date as well, and their catchers have not. And as I said above, this is an incredibly small sample size. But it is fun (at least to me) to track these things.

by clark on Mar 2, 2009 2:00 PM CST reply actions

Incredibly small is correct.

lol. no.

the absurdity of “J-Rod”

firstly – it’s not “jay-rod” it’s “jarrod”
secondly – it’s retarded.

but surely the Subway guy is Jay-rod, right?

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 2, 2009 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

Obviously his name is not actually 'jay-rod'

but when you say his nickname is ‘j-rod’ what other way do you pronounce except ‘jay-rod’

(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"
(Husband) "Hmm... well, porn, I guess."

by mtex on Mar 2, 2009 3:53 PM CST up reply actions

if i wanted to pronounce it jerrod

i would just write jerrod. the fact that i’m saying a word that is not his name is part of what makes it a nickname. otherwise it would just be his name.

the cleverness comes from the idea of using all the other X-Rod names and applying it to a name that seemingly doesn’t fit – but does. Making it clever.

Teabags and his stick

could produce something at the big league level. His d is definetly superior to that of Salty. Why not take a small hit on O for a stud defender and not lose a whole lot at the plate. It just makes sense, this club can always score.

I don’t believe that one bit. Tea has been nothing but awesome since he got here. But who’s to say really? Just going off of what they’ve both done in their big league time…

I’m just saying, at the big league level, Teagarden mashed last year, which is something Salty hasn’t done in 2 seasons with Atlanta or Texas. If he ever does, I will be happy to say I was wrong.

To the tune of 6 HR's anda .319 clip?

Look, I get that it’s a ridiculously small sample size, but he was really good when he played last year. If/when he cools off at the MLB level, I’ll shut up. But he hasn’t given me any reason to think he can be less than stellar yet. I know his minor league numbers weren’t great, but he was consistently injured, which can do that to anyone. If he’s finally healthy and here to stay, I’m anxious to see what he can do.

Ha ha...that would have been a good one

The other guys probably would have gotten a good laugh out of that. The entire dugout was watching/listening to my exchange with Sidney.

In Iowa...

…when the RedHawks were here. I was on a photo pass that day, so I was in the photo wells during the game.

During the game

I was in the photo well next to the dugout on a press pass.

Heh

It’s really not that cool. I guarantee I couldn’t get a pass at RBIA. Although, my buddy Brad got a pass for me one day and I worked for him taking pictures of ads around the ballpark during the game. And he mistakenly got an all access pass instead of just a pass for the photo wells. So I could have gone into the clubhouse had I wanted. So dangerous :)

I got a new toy for you guys...

http://nationalpastimealmanac.com/

It a MLB database that goes from 1876-2008 for MLB data with a lot of interesting search features..

Who was the last guy to win back to back 20 games? Roy Oswalt..

Who was the last guy to get HBP more than 30 times in a season since 1940? Jason Kendal..

Did you know that Stan Musial was the only guy to OPS over 1000 in back to back season while having 200 or more hits…

This thing is great for weird baseball stuff…

by laxtonto on Mar 2, 2009 3:59 PM CST reply actions

Did you know that

FOF is tied for 7th since 1940 in consecutive seasons with at least 20 GIDP with 3? And his streak is still active… he could tie Julio Franco and Miguel Tejeda in a few years. I wonder if they will make as big a deal about that as they did his 200 hit streak?

by laxtonto on Mar 2, 2009 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

if it is as good as you say

it probably deserves its own fan shot or fan post

I am about to run to class here soon

If it gets more attention in thread Ill make a fan post…

No one reads fan shots ….

by laxtonto on Mar 2, 2009 4:06 PM CST up reply actions

You've got my attention

Accept don’t include anything about Jason Kendall… no one wants to hear about him

(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"
(Husband) "Hmm... well, porn, I guess."

by mtex on Mar 2, 2009 4:08 PM CST up reply actions

Kendal was a result...

I was not “looking” for Jason Kendal…

Did you know Eddie Murray leads all players since 1940 in number of hits in their 1st 3 professional seasons? Mark Texiera was 6th.

Pete Rose and Chipper Rose are tied at .309 for top BA for the first 10 years of a career.

There are only 8 players since 1940 to acquire 2000 K in their first 10 seasons combined?

Who where they?

Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan, Fergie Jenkins, Tom Seaver, Bert Blylevan, Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez… That is one hell of a list
