National Pastime Almanac 1876-2008

I found this the other day while visiting a few other baseball boards..

It is a pretty easy to use MLB stat database that is totally free to download.

http://nationalpastimealmanac.com/

It  goes from 1876-2008 for MLB data with a lot of interesting search features that allow you to look for best multiple seasons or best single season for pitcher, hitter or manager. Sorry guys, no OPS+ or any advanced stats, but it is still great to play around with

Such as:

Who was the last guy to win 20 games in back to back seasons? Roy Oswalt before him Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens and Jack McDowell..

Who was the only guy to get HBP more than 30 times in back to back seasons since 1940? The immortal Jason Kendal..

Did you know that Stan Musial was the only guy to OPS over 1,000 in back to back season while having 200 or more hits since 1940…

FOF is tied for 7th since 1940 in consecutive seasons with at least 20 GIDP with 3? And his streak is still active… he could tie Julio Franco and Miguel Tejeda in a few years.

Did you know Eddie Murray leads all players since 1940 in number of hits in their 1st 3 professional seasons? Mark Texiera was 6th.

Pete Rose and Chipper Rose are tied at .309 for top BA for the first 10 years of a career.

There are only 8 players since 1940 to acquire 2,000 K in their first 10 seasons combined.

Who where they?

Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan, Fergie Jenkins, Tom Seaver, Bert Blylevan, Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez…

So if you find anymore nice little nuggets of information, feel free to throw them in here.

Did you know?

The Rangers have had only 3 stretches of back to back seasons of 82 or more wins.

77-80, 89-92 and 98-00

On the other hand, the Rangers have had stretches of 90 consecutive loses 4 times.. 5 times in a row (61-66), 4 times in a row (70-74) and back to back twice(84-86 and 02-04).

So no complaining about how bad the team has been recently, those fans in the 60’s and 70’s really had it rough.

Did you know since 1940 there has been a total of 1 season that the team BA was over .300? Bos 1950… and they still finished 4 games back

The last team to have a team ERA below 3? 1989 LA Dodgers

The last team to have 140 errors in a season? 04 Tigers

The last time a team had back to back 140 error seasons? 00-02 Padres.

I think there numbering system is skewed...

77-80 is how it shows, but wouldn’t it be the 77, 78 and 79 seasons? Same with 89,90, and 91 and 98 and 99?

I didn’t notice it till now

There is a teammates option...

Nolan Ryan pitched under 15 different managers in his career and dealt with 707 different position players and 206 different pitchers.

49 different C, 266 different INF and 293 OF.

Julio Franco and his ageless nomadic career is 798 position players, 325 pitchers and 12 Managers…

The heaviest officially listed player in MLB history was “Jumbo” Brown , who played in 25-41.

The Skinniest guy ever listed at 6"6 or higher was Derek Lowe at 170.. McCarthy came in at 11th at 6"7 190.

Wow.

136 Dicks have played in MLB, starting with Dick McBride, who was born in 1845, and ending with Dick Scott, who was born in 1962.

Pete and Chipper Rose

are about to take a backseat to Ichiro and Pujols. Ichiro’s had 8 seasons and has a .331. He should also pass 2000 hits this year, in his ninth season. Wow. Pujols has played 8 seasons and has a .334. Those dudes can swat.

Pujols is gonna do dirty things to the record books.

only 4 players (1 did it twice)

had a season with at least
100 runs
100 rbi
40 doubles
10 triples
30 home runs
.330 avg
.400 ob%

and they’re all from the 30s and 40s

they are…
joe medwick 1937
hank greenberg 1937
joe dimaggio 1941
stan musial 1948
stan musial 1949

take out the 10 triples requirement and it jumps to 28 seasons.

and stan musial is on the list 4 times.hank greenberg twice. albert pujols 3 times todd helton 3 times
