T.R. Sullivan mailbag

T.R. Sullivan has a new mailbag up...he predicts Cat is traded or released at the end of spring training and fields several questions on the catching situation, mentioning that you could see renewed Boston/Texas trade talk at the end of the spring.

He also appears to still be a member of the Joaquin Arias fan club:

The Rangers need to keep an open mind as to who is ready to play shortstop right now: Arias or Andrus. There is little doubt here that Arias could be a frontline Major League shortstop if not for his shoulder problems.

The club has pretty clearly made a decision on this issue, although Sullivan has been a fan of Arias (and Travis Metcalf) for a while, and I think he'd like to see those two get a legit shot.

The National somehow sustains continued disappointment along with continued not giving up on them. Their popularity makes no sense to me.

Saw them…non plused.

Bought Boxer, remember nothing outside that opening piano part (although it’s a beautiful Pete Katis recording).

Read some of the lyrics, they’re not really grabbing me.

They’re just a band without crescendos, just good in-the-pocket plateauing. The singer can’t really sing; I’d say that forms the band’s ceiling.

None of it’s a problem per se and, meantime, they draw huger crowds than ever.

Embarrassing to admit but the popularity is what makes me curious at all.

Go Strangers.

Here is a question

How mad would you be if the Rangers took a lesser prospect in return for Salty if the Red Sox were to take on Cat’s contract? Basically, the Rangers trade Salty for, say, Bard + $5 million.

And would the Red Sox do it?

by JBImaknee on Mar 2, 2009 5:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Why would the Rangers do that?

Salty’s value plus the value of the higher prospect are surely worth more than Cat’s contract.

by brettgardner on Mar 2, 2009 5:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it is that out of the question

A minimum return for Salty tossed around these parts is Salty for Bowden + Bard (nevermind Buchholz, which isn’t happening). But lets assume the Red Sox just refuse to give both Bowden and Bard, and counter with Salty for just Bard. Maybe the Rangers say “sure, just take Cat and his contract” and we’ll have a deal. Its basically asking “Is Bowden worth $6 million?”

And if Adam’s panicky rages against Tom Hicks are true, and all Hicks cares about is saving a buck and not the Rangers, then I don’t see why he wouldn’t use this as an opportunity to shed a big fat contract. I personally don’t think Tom Hicks is as bad an owner as AJM suggests, but if he is, then this isn’t an impossible scenario.

by JBImaknee on Mar 2, 2009 5:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

For an organization trying to gain credibility with it's fan

That deal would create an incredible backlash.

It depennds on what that 6M gets me

If that 6M goes towards the 14.25 M that Roy Halladay is due this year, then I would not be as pissed.

Send Salty and Cat to Bos for Bard.

Send Bard plus others to Tor for Roy Halladay.

Then I would not be angry.

In no way what so ever, is Bard, a good RP prospect, and 6 million dollars worth Salty.

Even with the small chance

that Cat’s contract is actually holding this team back from signing an Inoa type player (since we were going to sign him last year), that’s still a horrible deal for the Rangers.

so if someone in the draft

like Porcello fell to the Rangers with a $6 bonus demand and the only way to pick him would be to do that, you wouldn’t trade Salty for Bowden + $6M to get him signed? I know that isn’t going to be the case, just curious. At that point though, Salty will probably have established himself as worth considerately more or less than that.

by CS3 on Mar 3, 2009 5:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

In that very strange hypothetical

that has other factors involved in making the decision other than just available money, I might consider the deal. I’d also consider hunting down Tom Hicks if he lets Cat’s contract over the next couple of years prevent him from making another baseball move that this team feels is necessary.

arias was a nice prospect but assuming the shoulder was fine his realistic upside was as a solid starting shortstop. i dont think anyone every expected him to become frontline. sounds like T.R. got a typical glowing, exaggerated assessment from a team source and neglected to parse it the way a reporter ought to.

elvis doesnt have a bum shoulder

and theres a big difference in say, a starting shortstop like yuni betancourt and one like renteria. not that im using those guys as actual comps, but just to show that arias could be thought of (before the shoulder issues) as a starting SS without being particularly awe-inspiring the way elvis has. i also think elvis has demonstrated a much better likelihood of reaching that realistic upside, as well as a slight chance, because of his make-up, intelligence, and athleticism, of exceeding those expectations.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Mar 2, 2009 7:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i don't know

if Arias’ shoulder is able to return to full strength, I would say that only age separates him from Andrus. I think people have forgotten how good Arias was before his injury.

by clark on Mar 2, 2009 7:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i dont think age should be discounted too much though.

even with the time he’s missed, arias has 4 years on andrus and thus has, according to conventional wisdom, considerably less room for improvement. i agree arias had nice potential at some point but it just seems incorrect to say that sans the shoulder issue he’d be some kind of blue chip, cant-miss prospect. i think itd be more appropriate to say something like “If Arias hadnt injured the shoulder, his development path could have taken him to dazzling SS prospect status by now.”

The shoulder may be the thing that screwed with his development and has hindered him since, but its not as if were the shoulder start to magically improve, all the lost time and prospect stagnation would be suddenly undone. When Andrus is in AAA putting up a .750 OPS in three years, Ill buy the comp.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Mar 2, 2009 9:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Except

he wasn’t all that good. Arias, like Andrus, was one of those guys that all you could say was that he was young for his level.

Ehh tap the brakes a bit DJ

Arias had a couple decent seasons in the minors. His .300/.344/.396 season in Stockton as a 19 year old was pretty impressive then he followed that up with a .315/.335/.423 season in Frisco as a 20 year old.

not when that SS

shows no power, no ability to take a walk, and mediocre base running skills. His OPS was pretty BA driven which he won’t have as much luck with in the Majors unless he starts learning how to take a walk.

If Arias was our #9 hitter and produced a .750 OPS while playing above average defense at SS

I would be elated. I don’t know where this notion that SS all of a sudden is a position where power is a key component but its not.

Especially...

on this team with the above average offensive production that this team should get up the middle form other positions. The CF spot (as long as Hamilton is there), 2B, and hopefully C as well. I can’t see the Rangers having problems on offense this year, even after losing Bradley.

Offense from the SS position on the Rangers is just an added bonus. Defense at SS should be a must for any team.

by slc ranger on Mar 3, 2009 1:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If you think Arias can give you a .750 OPS, then I can see why you think that

I don’t see any way that Arias does give you that. He was a poor hitter in the minors and now you are expecting him to put up the same statistical line he had in AA but now while in the Majors. I don’t see him putting up a line much better than the optimistic predictions for Andrus this year. In other words, I’d be shocked if we get something much better than Eckstein-like production from Arias. And his slightly above average defense (his arm doesn’t seem to be anywhere near what it once was) doesn’t make up for the horrible offense.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Mar 3, 2009 1:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think he is capable of that now

This discussion started because Cahill said Arias wasn’t very good in the minors and only had his age at each level to prop him up. AArias put up a 750 OPS in AA at 20 years old. That was pre-injury. Had he not gotten injured and able to maintain his AA line through to the majors I think most people would be happy with it no matter how few walks he took.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Mar 3, 2009 2:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Even pre-injury, Arias had little to no shot of doing that in the Majors

A guy that posts a .750 OPS in AA based off of a high BA is almost guaranteed to see a drop off in his production as he faces much better pitching. He had no power and wasn’t expected to develop any and he couldn’t take a walk.. I don’t see many guys like that doing too well in the Majors.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Mar 3, 2009 11:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why couldn't he sustain that?

Was his average based on a fluky high BABIP? Maybe hes a guy who makes decent contact and can sustain a high BA. Like I said I don’t think he will put up those numbers now but had he not gotten injured to think a 21 year old in AAA couldn’t develop and be a productive MLer and sustain his ML numbers is a bit odd to me. I don’t think its that far out of the realm of possibility to think he couldn’t put up a line of .300/.325/.415. If he was doing that out of the 9 hole in our lineup while playing good SS defense people would be crazy to bitch about it.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Mar 4, 2009 8:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He can make decent contact

but how many players do you know in the Majors that are able to slug .400, not take any walks, and still hit over .300. Ichiro, Young, and Jeter can get by without hitting for much power and still hit .300, but each one of those guys can at least take some walks.

That 3.2 BB% he had in AA in 2005 would have been the second worst in the Major League last year. He would be right in front of Betancourt and finish behind Pierzynski, Molina, Kouzmanoff, and Freddy Sanchez. The best they were able to do was hit around .290, and each of those guys hit for some power last year.

Arias might get lucky in a season, but you can’t find guys to hit over .300 in the Majors when they walk around 3% of the time.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

When I signed up on U-Verse part of my deal was that I was given free access to all AT&T hotspots. From what I understand all Starbucks have at least AT&T wifi (while some may have AT&T and Verizon). I would call up AT&T and double-check with them, but I’m pretty sure you’re covered.
