Nice little jab

I like Andro

And he is a good writer but he is no Evan Grant.

Keith Law on Greg Golson, "He's similiar to Cameron and Hunter in that all three are black."

Why can't

we ever get one of our games televised to watch it on the damn MLB.com media center thing. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh’s game gets televised so its not just the usual big name teams.

On another note, is Andrus arm not coming back because he is afraid to test it or because it really went to hell after he hurt it?

Please tell me

you meant to type Arias instead of Andrus and I didn’t miss Elvis getting hurt.

Please.

I think....

He meant to say Arias. And i think Sunday’s game is on FSN if that’s any comfort to you.

yeah

definitely my fault on that one. Meant Arias

If he can get close to

Harrison and Bmac’s last 2 starts each would be huge.

OT: Aaron Crow

If Aaron Crow is still on the board when the Rangers turn comes do they pick him?

I'd certainly hope so

I think that would probably quality as the best case scenario that might be plausible.

Ok that said Adam

college pitcher that held out last season, like Crow

I think going into last season he was viewed in a similar light as Crow, but some type of injury scare knocked him backwards on draft boards. He was selected outside of the first round and held out, didn’t sign, and is supposed to play indy ball like Crow until the draft. Not sure if he is a Boras guy.

Others can probably fill in the details, but that is what I remember about him. Supposed to be very talented and a possible fast mover.

Doctor please. Some more of these.

sickels has a note about him

he had him as the third ranked college pitcher on last year’s board:

He’s made huge progress refining his talent this year, and pitching in a context with a composite ERA well over 5.00. He still has some work to do with his command, but I think he has a shot to be an outstanding pitcher, and I’ve had fleeting thoughts of ranking him first overall ahead of Crow and Matusz. I like the fact that he is a great athlete with a reasonably fresh arm in particular.

that the draft position is a huge question mark outside of Strasburg, Grant Green and Matt Purke, who I think are top 5 locks baring injury.

Don't forget...

Dustin Ackley and Alex White. That’s your likely top 5 right there. My far too early guess:

1. Nats – Stephen Strasburg
2. Mariners – Grant Green
3. Padres – Dustin Ackley
4. Pirates – Alex White
5. Orioles – Matt Purke (maybe Tyler Matzek or even Donovan Tate)

According to Peter Gammons

Boras could demand $50MM over six years if Spephen Strasburg is drafted #1. If this is the case How far does he fall. If the Nats were not willing to pony up for Crow I doubt they will give Boras and Strasburg what they want. One can only hope the price tag is to steep for the M’s.

Keith Law on Greg Golson, "He's similiar to Cameron and Hunter in that all three are black."

by boomer1 on Mar 21, 2009 1:42 PM CDT reply actions

I think it will end up at $20 mil.

And Strasburg is a different animal from Crow. The Nats will pony up the money.

by Andy Seiler on Mar 21, 2009 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

So, the current trend is for clubs to buy out arbitration years plus a free agent year.

$50M over six years is taking the place of 3 yrs at $400-600K, plus as much as ~$10M/yr beginning the second arb year, IIRC the current arbitration contracts. That’s probably about $10M or more than a club would have paid had they given him a 3-yr ML contract with a $10M signing bonus.

JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!

by rooster on Mar 21, 2009 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Built in opt-outs are usually in draft contracts if they reach arbitration, too.

And he still might not reach arbitration until the 5th, maybe even 6th year, depending on if he gets hurt in the minors, etc.

by Andy Seiler on Mar 21, 2009 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

With the way our pitching is coming along

I would definitely give Strasburg 6 years 50M. Am I crazy or just too caught up in all of this?

Can you imagine a future of Strasburg, Holland, Feliz, Main, Perez???

Could happen to lots of people...

Doesn’t mean you don’t draft and pay for the talent (not that I think he’s worth $50 mil). Aaron Crow, discussed above, has many more mechanical issues documented than Strasburg.

had a lot more do do with this injuries than that…

There’s really no way you can dispute that. The mechanics weren’t great, but he was left out to dry. No matter how good your mechanics are, throwing that hard for that long at a young age will get you almost every time.

It would seem like...

…the way our pitching is coming along (in terms of high-upside young arms) would make you less likely to break the bank for a Strasburg, rather than more.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 21, 2009 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions

No such thing as too much pitching.

JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!

by rooster on Mar 21, 2009 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying there is

However, one is going to be more likely to overpay to shore up something that there is a lack of in the system, rather than a plethora of.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 21, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Pick the best player on the board.

I wouldn’t give him 6/50M, though. That’s pretty much saying he’s a ML pitcher right now, and he needs to spend zero years in the minors. It’s basically Matsuzaka’s contract, but no one would argue that Strasburg is as far along as Matsuzaka was when he signed, except Boras, of course.

So, anything beyond a three-year contract just doesn’t make sense, but it’s possible to think he would be worth the dollar amount from his first arbitration year… something like 3/24, including a $12M bonus.

JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!

by rooster on Mar 21, 2009 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions

While I generally agree...

…with picking the best player on the board, if the best player on the board wants a major league deal worth $20 million over 5 years, and the second best player on the board wants a minor league deal with a $2 million signing bonus, doesn’t that have to be taken into account?

Particularly if we assume that one does not believe the difference between 1 and 2 is vast?

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 21, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

If the difference is that close

Then yes you do take the second best player.

Keith Law on Greg Golson, "He's similiar to Cameron and Hunter in that all three are black."

by boomer1 on Mar 21, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

In this situation...

Strasburg probably is worth the difference over anyone else in this draft. It’s just not a great draft behind him.

by Andy Seiler on Mar 21, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

As a general principle, sure it's a consideration.

As it applies to Strasburg, it’s not a consideration.

So, I see no reason that a ML team would give a draft pick a 5-yr or 6-yr contract. If that’s what it comes down to, just don’t sign the dude and redraft the next year. There is no such thing as too much pitching, but a deep stable like the Rangers have can allow them to negotiate a hard line.

JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!

by rooster on Mar 21, 2009 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's use your numbers

If the second best player on the board is a guy expected to sign a minor league deal for $2mm, we’re assuming Strasburg’s fallen to the teens, where guys like Matt Davidson/Scheppers/Mychal Givens/Robbie Shields are expected to go.

If the difference between Strasburg and Grant Green is vast…imagine the difference between Strasburg and the 2nd best player in your scenario.

Heh - Festival Of Bunting Continues
With two outs and nobody on base in the first inning of Saturday’s game, Colorado, an NL club, put three players on the right side of the infield and pulled its third baseman way off the line with Josh Hamilton at bat.

So, Hamilton tried once again to bunt for a hit. He rolled one ball up the third base line foul and squared twice – with two strikes – before taking a called third strike.

I’m not sure which is stranger, the sight of Hamilton attempting to bunt or the Rockies shifting a player they won’t face this season in the first inning of an exhibition game

From EG.

Urgh

I was playing my RTTS guy a week ago, I simmed mostly and he got called up to the majors to make a debut in Game 6 of the 2010 ALCS at home against Boston after David Murphy broke a finger. Got two hits, drove a run in and gunned someone down at home.

So Rangers ahead with a 7-4 lead, CJ Wilson comes in to save the game and promptly blows the lead, Rangers lose 8-7 then face a Game 7 mismatch with Mendoza against Dice-K. It’s a blowout loss, 8-2. Not cool.
