Jennings to Pen?

On the team site there is an article saying the Rangers are considering a move to middle relief for Jennings. The pen seems to be set with CJ, Eddy, FX2, Mad dog, and Eyre manning 5 spots.

Lets say Nippert starts on the DL, and we go with an 8 man pen to start the season. I think that I would rather keep Turnbow, Donnely, and Rupe (who is out of options) around as opposed to experimenting with Jennings (who has only 1 career relief appearance). Once Nippert is back, get rid of whoever has been the least effective between Donnely and Turnbow. I'd rather Jennings and Benson play in AAA, and whoever performs best get the callup once the first injury goes down. What do yall think?

Well, they might just be doing that to keep Jennings around

I think he can opt out right after spring training if he’s not added to the 40.

Who knows, he might make a good swingman…

would you rather have Jennings

at the risk of losing Nippert or Rupe?

No, definitely not

I’m just stating the possible logic behind the move. But I’d rather have Rupe and Nippert in the bullpen, myself.

+1

big time (esp. turnbow)

by BuckyB on Mar 21, 2009 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

I think that’s the thinking.

Maybe the club is taking a look at Jennings in middle relief, possibly as a long man/spot starter, at the expense of Turnbow or Donnelly. What’s their opt out status? I could see them maybe doing this to keep Jennings, and then keep one of Turnbow/Donnelly up and send the other to AAA if one of those hasn’t particularly impressed.

What's their opt out status?

Who cares. I wished Donnelly showed more this ST, but he doesn’t look like his old self yet and Turnbow just isn’t that good to worry about losing.

Kind of what I'm thinking...

of the trio I’d most like to keep Jennings. Turnbow and Donnelly I wouldn’t mind losing if we had to, or at least sending them down and giving them more time to try to refind themselves if they’d be willing to stick.

yeah

Jennings has certainly proved his value out of the bullpen, especially the last couple of years…

If the future of your bullpen

depends on Jennings effectively mopping-up ugly 7th innings then, well, do I really have to say it..?

deja vu???

i would rather have jennings at the risk of losing galarraga.

what’s the worst thing that could happen…

oh wait.

jennings is the biggest piece of shit ever and galarraga turned out to be good.

Galarraga pitched in a pitchers park

And got extremely lucky. Jennings biggest pieceof shit ever really? I can think of several that are much worse. Not to mention if Jennings returns to what he was in Colorado in a hitters park before he got hurt will be an asset.

What was the point of signing him again?

Eh, we thought he was gonna be Aki-lite, as I recall.

Turns out he was more like Hideki Irabu-lite.

Nippert

I think alot of this invloves how bad Nipperts injury actually is. The more I look at it the best scenarios are this.

If Nippert will be available to pitch on April 12th (the only time we’d need our #5 starter until April 25th) then I think he starts the season on the DL retroactive to whatever day needed and we start with an 8 man pen of FX2, CJ, Eddie, Madrigal, Eyre, Turnbow, Donnelly, Rupe. Then on the 12th Nippert is activated and Eyre is optioned to OKC alowing Nippert to start that game and then go into his bullpen role. Then on the 25th you make a decision on if one of Turnbow or Donnelly need to be released or if Madrigal needs to be optioned

The other scenario is if Nippert isn’t available on the 12th. You keep Jennings along with FX2, CJ, Eddy, Madrigal, Eyre, and two of Turnbow/Donnelly/Rupe. Jennings makes the start on the 12th and then goes into a relief role and on the 25th when Harrison would be needed as a starter you make a decision. If Jennings has had success as a reliever you option Eyre or Madrigal. If not you DFA him hoping he would accept an assignment to Frisco to continue working towards getting better. Then when Nippert is ready and healthy you either option a guy or release a guy.

Also

Could someone put the link to where it states Rupe is out of options. By my count he used an option in 2005 and 2006. In 2007 he was on the 60 day DL all year and even though he got service time he didn’t use an option. Then last year he wasn’t optioned.

I emailed Evan about that

and he said that it was true, Rupe has no options. He was right on Eyre so I assume his info is from the FO in some from.

what I want to know

is if Turnbow has an opt-out date in his minor league contract or if it is just a split contract. I have seen nothing indicating he has an opt-out date…

by Goyogringo on Mar 21, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Isn't there a time limit on options

or a service time limit on options? I think I remember reading something about that a while back. Anyone have any info on that?

Tough to call it a bad day

when you have to beat UConn and Duke (at Greensboro) to advance as 9 and 7 seeds. If they go 0-3 tomorrow, that will be a bad weekend, but given seeds, the Big XII has done pretty well so far.

A&M will be back and better next year

only losing 1 player, and that freshman big man from Miami looks like a really good player.

And UT

Really, really could have won that game, or at least sent it to OT. Lazy rebounding and lack of quickness to the ball really hurt at the end.

I don't think

it would hurt to try Jennings out as a reliever for a couple outings when the game isn’t close. I definitetly do not want him starting one game for us this year though.

by Stevoo on Mar 21, 2009 10:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Jennings...

I don’t want to see him as a reliever. To me his only value is as a starter. If he wants to opt out and not go to OKC to start the year and be insurance for the rotation then I have no interest in him.

He can’t expect someone to put him on their opening day roster when he hasn’t pitched at the ML level for two years because of injuries can he? Starter or bust for me on Jennings.
