Jon Daniels with a "state of the team" talk

T.R. Sullivan has a piece up this evening, where Jon Daniels gives a sort of "state of the Rangers" overview of where things stand and how he feels about things...

The one name that jumped out at me was Jake Brigham, who was pretty highly regarded after the 2007 season, missed all of the year because of Tommy John surgery, and is apparently impressing with his breaking ball this spring...

“I could care less about Spring Training numbers and very little whether a guy is hitting .200 or .800,” Daniels said. “That doesn’t change our evaluation. What we’re looking for is improvement, aptitude, the work that’s put in and conditioning…”

A lot of comments in there that I like. However, are Daniels, Wash, Rudy and Nolan on the same page?

Not with Jones it seems like

Sounds like JD has the level head on this one.

And it’s kind of concerning to see that JD’s the one with the level head and still can’t do anything to stave off a disaster because Nolan is apparently taking Rudy’s word on Jones.

I'd rather they NOT be on the same page

I want checks and balances. It’s tough when it SEEMS that the hitting coach and pitching coach outweigh the manager, and the GM is undercut/overcut so often, but I like the committee approach. And I believe that if Jones deserves to spend significant time on this team, there’s a reason for it, whether that be a trade in the works for Cat and maybe another for Byrd as well, or that Jones is flat-out believed to be able to help this team win now, without sacrificing our younger players.

He'll likely spend his All-Star Break in Frisco

And if they option him on the off day (Jul 2) then He can spend 2 weeks on the farm before the 2nd half starts. Isn’t that’s all that’s required to save the year? He’d miss the July 4th home series and a west coast road trip at a convenient time to showcase Vizquel or Arias for a potential trade. O reven more built around the trade deadline would be to option him July 6 to Frisco and then call him back up the 20th for the Boston series.

by bstair on Mar 23, 2009 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

If he is holding his own

There is no reason to send him to the minors. He might not understand how service time works but you can bet your ass his agent does.

As is typical around here there is way too much hand wringing going on. The guy hasn’t even made the team yet. All they are doing is keeping him around until the end of spring training. Let’s wait until the bad things actually happen to start worrying about them.

I still think Marlon should get the centerfield job. If not for the entire season then for a good 100 games or so.

It just makes too much sense to me with Borbon on stand-by, Hamilton needing to be moved, and Byrd looking like a good candidate to bring back prospects via trade or through compensation.

Yeah

I’m not too thrilled either, given the talk of his defense lapses.

That said, I think pblack is right. I’d wait until he’s even on the team before I’d start hand wringing (a la Broussard).

OTOH, there’s already been so much hand wringing BEFORE he’s on the team, that any more would likely be overkill….
