Out clauses, roster situations, and the like
T.R. Sullivan has a piece up this afternoon that runs down the various and sundry out clauses for some of the Rangers NRIs, the option situation for some players, and various contract situations...
A useful collection of info, I think, to check out...

After all the hamburger discussion a couple days ago I figured some here would appreciate this.
Finish it in one sitting and the will put a new shirt on your corpse after you die of a heart attack.

Well that sucks
If I want to get the T-shirt, I can’t bring it back to my seat, otherwise I won’t be able to prove that I didn’t share it. What a rip off. I won’t be buying it, now.

How about this
Burger consisting of five pounds of beef, one pound of bacon and a quarter pound of cheese.

lol

Amateur
He’s got the tomatoes on the bottom. That always leads to soggy bottom bun. When he tried to eat this, its gonna fall apart.

Mega Mels Menu
Lists the burger with only 1.5 pounds of beef. That’s easy.

No burger discussion
Well, looking at the roster situation, the three slots we’ve got on the 40 man, (one free, and two from Hurley and Benoit) are definitely going to Andrus, Guardado, and Vizquel. This means that in order for the team to keep Jones, someone has to be moved off the roster, and that means Cat. that’s pretty easy, Cat for Jones, Jones for Cat.
the bullpen is not so easy.
Guys who “made” the team:
Francisco, Wilson, Madrigal. (on the roster)
Guardado (taking the place of Benoit).
But we’re looking at a 6 man pen, which means two more people.
Rupe and Nippert are both on the roster, but have by no means secured slots.
The rest of the group includes Turnbow, Gobble, and Donnelly.
That’s 5 guys for 2 slots.
Now if Nippert doesn’t make the team, you could put him on the 15 day dl, but you still need a spot on the 40. simply dumping Nippert and Rupe may be the solution, but since you’ve already outrighted Nippert, you are probably going to lose him, and he’s got an arm. Rupe you could probably be rid of and no one would cry much.
So, who do you keep? anyone know?
8 man bullpen?
I think they plan to go with a 7 man pen. If you are thinking they will send down thier 5 th SP for a couple of weeks I think they would keep someone already on the 40 in that spot. Rupe could be the benefactor in that case.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
8 man pen
I say to start the season go with a 4 man rotation and 8 man pen. Nippert can start the game on the 12th I believe while we send Harrison down to OKC to get 3 starts and stay on normal rest before coming up for his start on the 25th.
For the pen I would go with Frankie, CJ, Eddie, Nippert, Turnbow, Rupe, Eyre, Madrigal.
If Donnelly forces his way on the team then either Madrigal r Eyre can start in OKC. This gives you almost 3 weeks to evaluate guys before making a roster decision on the 25th to get Harrison up. Either Eyre or Madrigal can be optioned if needed or Turnbow, Donnelly, Rupe, or Nippert can be DFAd.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
sounds good
Who do you DFA to make room for Turnbow? Metcalf?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Well personally
I would start Andrus in the minors so he wouldn’t need a 40 spot yet. Then on the 25th when Harrison is brought up you probably DFA Turnbow or Rupe and give that spot to Andrus. It buys you that extra year of team control and theres no issues of dropping someone who you may regret later on.

so gobble has an opt out date...
that is a bit of a bummer, as it means we can’t stash him in AAA for a while (unless he consents). it sort of puts him and guardardo on level footing as we head into the final stretch.
Anywho, with three empty spots availaable, we have:
Roster additions (fo sho):
Elvis Andrus
One of Guardardo/Gobble
Roster additions (chances are strong to quite strong):
Turnbow
Andruw Jones (might not matter if the Rangers trade Cat or Byrd)
Omar Vizquel (the club may choose to keep Arias)
Benson starts the year in AAA, as do Donnelly and Jennings if they choose to accept their assignments.
I kind of doubt that
Gobble has a lot of great options.

Jim Callis agrees with me:
Paul (Abingdon, MD): Hey Jim, what do you see as the timetable for Wieters to hit the bigs for good?
Jim Callis: (2:27 PM ET ) He could handle it right now. But the Orioles almost certainly will keep him down long enough to delay his free agency (and possibly his arbitration) by a year. And as much as that stinks from a fan standpoint, it makes perfect sense for a team with no shot of contending. Why burn one of his non-free agent years?
It’s pretty silly that Wieters will start the season in the minors and Andrus will start the season in the majors. Also, for what it’s worth, I think that the line about how they aren’t going to mess around with Andrus is a cop out.
