When you are trying to hold payroll under $50 million
and you have $16 million in a 3B, how much do you have left for Hamilton?

A 5 year contract for Hamilton
Should come in around $40 million total (though he’ll probably get $45). Pedroia and Youklis’s contracts should be reference points.
Anyway, the point is that the first year or two he shouldn’t be getting that much more than, say, $4 million (if the deal spreads out the money he’d normally receive during his later arbitration years). So as much as you want to be grumpy about Young, he shouldn’t affect the deal that much, assuming that Hicks is open to have two bigger contracts in 2011-2013
by JBImaknee on Mar 25, 2009 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I bet the sticking point
is more about how many total years. IIRC right now this is year 3 of the team names the contract. Hamilton probably doesn’t want more than a 4 year deal. The team probably would love to get a 5-7 year deal for him. That could well be the sticking point. I can see both sides to this one.
I bet we end up seeing a 4 year deal with a club option for the 5th year. It would be almost tempting to try something like an 8 year deal, but I’m not sure I want to extend that risk at this point.
by JKolar on Mar 26, 2009 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I get the feeling it's the other way around
I’m guessing he wants five or six years and the team went 3/$30 million or something. It’s just a hunch, though.

This has to be a unique negotiation considering if we buy out any of his FA years it will push him into murky water as to his next contract.

I wouldn't think so
If Hamilton goes out and has another season like he had this past year he will get big money in arbitration. Probably somewhere between Prince Fielder and Ryan Howard money their first arbitration cases. Right now you could probably get Josh for 5/60. After the season it would probably jump to 5/70-75

or
if Hammy goes out there and misses two months or wears down as the season goes on, he loses much of his argument that he’s destined for an exponential improvement through his arbitration years. Remember, this contract would likely be through ages 28-32 or so, not 23-28… Can’t really expect the Rangers to price in improvement
It’ll take far less than 5/60 to sign him.

i would wait
until the allstar break. thereabouts. roll the dice. he plays a little worse then last year then his salary drops and you get a better idea of the player he is. see how he does without milton bradley hitting behind him 70% of the time. from april 26 to june 2ndish he was HOT. after that and before that he came back to earth. was it the heat? i don’t know. pitchers get used to him? i don’t know.
i am confident that he can be a .290/.350/.500 kind of guy with 30 homers every year. but i’m not sure about 130 rbi, that mostly depends on ian kinsler.

Arbitration figures
If I remember how it works theres a max number that Hamilton can actually ask for next year based on this years salary. I’d bet that he would likely get more money from us in salary next year than he is likely to get in arbitration.
by JKolar on Mar 26, 2009 9:10 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think so
He can ask for whatever he wants and the club can offer whatever they want. If they don’t work out a deal before the hearing then those are the only two options the arbitrator has to decide between.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
by bigsteve on Mar 26, 2009 9:15 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm pretty sure
that there is a max amount based on the previous years contract that the player can get a raise from. Other wise you would see a lot of 10-12 million dollar salaries in the first year of arbitration for the best young players, and those are the numbers you see in year 3 of arbitration at the soonest.
by JKolar on Mar 26, 2009 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
I just looked at the CBA and there is no maximum salary you can demand in arbitration. You cannot have your salary reduced by more than 20% but it can go up as much as you wish. The problem, and why more players don’t make more, is that if you demand such an excessive number the club will simply go to arbitration and win their case.

Depends
This is dependent on a lot of factors. If I’m Hamilton, I want to get a contract done now. He is not a kid anymore and is coming off a near MVP quality season. He also knows he has been injury prone. I can’t imagine he wouldn’t want to get a deal done right now.
As for the Rangers, they of course would like to get a deal done as well, however they probably are less willing to budge off their offering price, imho. They know the risk with Hamilton and they of course know that he needs to prove he can be healthy for at least two consecutive years. I wouldn’t overpay for him now. I would if he proves himself later.

To his credit
This Andruw Jones thing is scary. It indicates to me that Hicks likes to have a business back-up plan when it comes to this team. The team probably won’t make him money by getting to the playoffs so he might as well employee people who will sell tickets and merchandise. It is very reminiscent of the Sammy Sosa ordeal which was good upfront because it garnered a lot of attention. Who knows it the team would be seriously hurt by taking away those at-bats so he keeps Sideshow as the real deal.
If he continues to do this it will continue to jeopardize our younger players development in order to make money now. I don’t care much for that business model but I can understand it.

I hate getting sucked into this
I can’t see the corollary between Jones and Sosa, other than the fact they were both all stars at one point. Sosa was a Superstar, possible/likely Hall of Famer, who was invited to Texas, his first team, to hit some milestones. And, though it is anathema to say, it wasn’t bad that he was on the team. He was an effective player in Texas. Had he been limited to facing lefties, as he probably should have been, he would have been an excellent player to have on the roster. In 2007, the Rangers weren’t stunting anyone’s development other than a mediocre Jason Botts and an odd Nelson Cruz by signing Sosa. He was a special case, not a business model Hicks tries every year.
Jones is completely different. He has no ties to Texas. I can’t imagine that “Andruw Jones in CF” is going to sell more than maybe a handful of tickets to any given game. His being invited to camp is something every team does at one point or another. Bring in the veteran coming off a bad season or two and hope some magic is rekindled. This has worked for Texas in the past (Kevin Elster comes to mind). The only difference is that Andruw Jones is high profile because of the extent of his fall. He was an extremely good player 5 years ago. He was an extremely bad player last year. I’m pretty sure Hicks, JD, and Nolan know all of this. A bad Andruw Jones isn’t going to be playing in Arlington in August.
Jones and Sosa are completely different situations. And while I can understand being wary of Andruw Jones actually making the team, him getting invited to camp is not the same thing as Sosa holding ABs away from Jason Botts.

have overreacting to an art form by now. We’re not passing them anytime soon based on overreacting alone. When Adam works everyone into a mindless furor about how Teagarden and Andrus rooming together will alienate the working relationship between Andrus and Salty (and I’m pretty sure he could just by saying Sosa did the same thing to Botts and Laird), we’ll have approached Cubs territory.

Agreed
As someone said earlier, it makes more sense for Hamilton to talk extension than the Rangers.
If Hamilton were also an average-plus defensive CF, then, I could see the urgency to try to extend him. But now that it seems like he’s more of a RF, while it’s better to have the bird in hand, his skill set is not irreplaceable.
Especially, if his prior health issues led to missed playing time or a more pronounced dropoff in his post-peak years.
