Bad news for Feldman
Warner Madrigal walked 2 guys, allowed a homer and gave up 4 runs in 2 innings today.
Bad news for Scott Feldman, if he wants to stay in the rotation, since Madrigal was one of the few relief candidates who had pitched well enough for the Rangers to consider a viable RH setup option.
If Madrigal ends up tanking, the possibility of Feldman going to the pen to fill the 8th inning setup role becomes more likely.

You mean 7th inning?

I think he's saying that Wilson is probably the 8th inning guy

I assumed the 8th inning would be CJ's...

Well
It usually depends. I suspect that they are uncomfortable with only a couple of lefties in the 8th inning role.

i think so
this is still just ST. He’s had good minor league numbers and was decent last year with Texas. I thought we don’t put much stock into ST stats…
Stability is key, and JD is a Beast.

My concern is that Feldman might not be any better in the pen than those folks who are currently “struggling”, and that nothing will get accomplished by putting him there.
Well, if Feldman can't tune it up for an inning or two and get outs when he needs to
Then he probably wouldn’t be pitching well enough to belong in the rotation, either.

He is below average in the rotation
With the exception of one year (when he was a sidewinder), he was below average in the pen. He has below average stuff and below average command. He stayed healthy and consistently pitched below average baseball last season, and consistency merits some value in its own. Sure, he might gain a couple of extra mph on his fastball in the pen, but I don’t think that will be enough to make him a “good” bullpen option. I am not sure that he will be better than Rupe.
Yeah, but he couldn't make it deep into games last year in the roto either
He averaged something like 5.7 innings and the splits show opponents lit him up for a 967 OPS in the 6th inning and a 1.271 from the 7th on. So it doesn’t look to me like he’s got the stamina to be a true innings eater any more than he has the stuff to pitch in the 8th inning in the bullpen.
Basically the guy’s ideal role looks like a fringy mid/long reliever who can play occasional swingman. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if there’s not much actual difference between him and Willie Eyre.

It was his first year starting
Do you think Frankie Francisco could go out and pitch 6 strong innings every 5 days?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

How do you figure?
How many complete games have guys thrown?
He should be given a chance to show hes improved over last season especially over a guy like Benson. Their ST stats are very similar. Not different enough to warrant keeping Benson and throwing Feldman to the pen

feldman
i dont really follow spring training. are they thinking he is a guy that will never give you more than 90-100 pitches? because if he can be stretched to 110-120 at time, i really would like to see him in the rotation.
Wouldn't a trade make more sense?
Surely the Rangers could get a decent reliever for Marlon Byrd. Brandon Boggs has looked very good in ST and of course we’ve all heard that Andruw Jones has a good chance to make the team as a backup.
If we have such a pressing need for a late-inning reliever, I’d much rather see Marlon Byrd dealt for a set-up man than see Feldman pushed out of the rotation for Kris Benson. Or why not allow Jennings to pitch in relief, as was discussed earlier?
Also, I know Jamey seemingly defended this decision by asking: what would you do if Holland is ready to join the rotation in May, and yet there is no room for him? But I don’t understand this way of thinking.
First, there is no reason to think that Benson is an improvement over Feldman.
Second, presuming that we can agree that Feldman is better than Benson, this move is going to make Feldman throw about 60 innings, as opposed to about 160-180 innings.
Third, I don’t have much faith in Feldman being a strong, shut down reliever. it seems as if he has a nice role as a 5th starter/swing man. He doesn’t strike out enough batters as it is, and it seems like this weakness could be exploited when he is only facing a couple batters late in the game with runners on base.
Fourth, the concern over Holland pushing someone out of the rotation seems overly optimistic. If Holland is knocking on the door, and yet Millwood, Padilla, McCarthy, Feldman, and Harrison are pitching so well that there is no room for him, chances are we are winning the division. It is pretty safe to say that at least 1 of those 5 starters will be hurt or ineffective at some point this year.
Fifth, what kind of message does this send to your players? Feldman did everything you could ask, was basically told he had a spot to lose, and now he is replaced by Kris Benson who hasn’t really pitched any better than him this spring. [Minus one terrible outing by Feldman]
I mean, I don’t expect Feldman to be a great pitcher. If Hurley were healthy, I’d prefer to have him in the rotation over Feldman. But Kris Benson? I just am at a loss. I cannot envision a way that this move would make us a better team.

I think Jamey is saying that this would allow Benson to be assigned to AA or AAA as an injury backup, and if he is not called up before May 27th (?), and Holland is ready before that day, he can be allowed to leave without having to put him through waivers or any recourse to the 40-man.
Why don't they just sign Ohman?

just said the Cubs will probably have an extra arm to deal at the end of spring training…

Warner Madrigal
Warner Madrigal pitched like he wants out…. he was terrible.
and I dont think that Feldman is better than Benson. in fact he may be better suited in the pen.
