GMJ is still grouchy
GMJ is still unhappy about being a backup outfielder in Anaheim:
"I'm not going to sit here and not play this season," Matthews said in a calm, measured voice. "I'm just not going to do it. Obviously, something must be done."
Obviously.

That is correct. Unfortunately, that something was called “not sucking the last two years” and it appears that he has failed at it.

Yeah Juan, I think the Dodgers would agree that they signed the wrong guy.

Karma and satisfaction
Think about how much outfielders have cost lately, then calculate the combined annual cost of Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, David Murphy, Brandon Boggs, and Frankie the Cat. We are either the Walmart of baseball or have a very good price performance situation.

why does everyone here dislike GMJ so much
he should probably go down as one of the greatest Rangers ever. We got him on the cheap for three serviceable years, he made a catch that was probably the greatest Ranger highlight reel of this pathetic decade until Hamilton’s AS HR derby display last summer, and then we parlayed his FA departure into Michael Main and Neil Ramirez, two of the livest arms in our system.
Plus, he now is taking up salary space on a division rival. And anyone who questions his motives for taking the contract in the first place is hypocritical and delusional.

makes you want to have a beer with the guy?
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
i don't need to have a beer with him
to understand where he is coming from. Perhaps it would be refreshing to see a professional athlete say -
“You know, I believe that I am talented enough to be a starting OF somewhere in this league, but at the same time I understand that I signed a FA contract that, while making me rich beyond my wildest imagination, has become too prohibitive in today’s crippling economic conditions to allow my organization to trade me so that I may start. So while I have to sit on the bench in Anaheim and watch guys like Rajai Davis and Brett f@#$ing Gardner start in this league, I am resigned to accept my fate. It’s too bad, because I really do have a passion for the game.”
i see. you feel sorry for the guy making 50M
if only someone would pay me 50M to sit on my ass and practice baseball when i wasn’t doing that.
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
yeah, I do
because it must suck when your entire self identity is tied to one thing, and now you aren’t allowed to do that one thing on a day in/day out basis because your team has a policy of bringing in one 30+ year old OF every offseason. I feel sorry for a lot of people in this world who make a lot more money than I do. Perhaps I am overly empathetic.
maybe he should read a book
learn french. start a website. start his own business. not suck at life so much.
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
He should talk with someone like Mike Lamb then
There are some players out there that really understand how the game works. They understand that they’re not going to the HOF and that they probably won’t always find a place to play every day. This GMJ thing keeps surprising me because he was one of those guys up until a few years ago. He pretty much has only been a starter for a few years of his decade long career and has been bouncing around from team to team throughout that time. I’m not going to feel sorry for a guy that is that delusional.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I don't think he sucks
I just think he is vastly overpaid, especially now. He would be starting for at least a third of the teams in baseball.
not for very long
or at least he shouldn’t. As a starter in 07, he had a 93 OPS+. Last year, he had a 77 OPS+. Add in that he now looks to be a defensive liability (check out his UZR with the Angels), and I can’t imagine why a team would want that in their starting lineup.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
which is my point
were talking about a guy with three CAREER seasons of over a 100 ops+ (and one of them was a 103 ops+)
who isnt that good on defense, and was complaining about not playing on a team last year that started vlad guerro and garret anderson (both guys seem to always be banged up)
your getting paid 50 million. sit down and shut up or get better. he had 426 AB last year, about 470 total PAs…what was he bitching and moaning about? oh yea, and he got paid 9.4 MILLION DOLLARS last year
is he even that much better than juan rivera?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

hops give it flavor
the higher “minute” brews they make just tend to be higher abv because of the other things they do.

i used to be more involved in beer stuff than i am now, i had always been told higher abv brews aged very well and from my experience they do.
the lower abv ones just get a little skunky.
i think it also depends on the types of yeast used.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
wow.
I need to try that out. I homebrew, and would love to do that, but I’m afraid that even with the natural hops, there isn’t enough preservative in there to keep it from going bad after that long…
I am bottling, hopefully, my best brew to date tonight. VERY excited. first time I’ve dry hopped

Lol - greatness
(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"

I will say this
The wife is from New Zealand, and according to her, the bust-a-gut night is frequently a weekly occurrence at popular watering holes, and as you’ll no doubt be unsurprised to hear, it be a popular night at the popular watering holes.
Bust-a-gut goes like so:
They ring a bell behind the bar, usually in the early evening, and at that glorious moment, draft pints are the equivalent of roughly a quarter.
One salient caveat-there is no going to the bog. Period. Nein. A vigilant watch is posted, typically a fierce looking Maori chap who could haka-slap an NFL lineman around. Any visit to the bog by any patron results in quarter-pint-privileges being revoked for ALL pub inhabitants poste haste.
As you might imagine, there is significant peer pressure involved. Especially considering Kiwiland is essentially 2 medium-big cities and a bunch of villages. if you fuck up bust-a-gut, you are most likely fucking it up for your next door neighbor and mum and cousin and ex-ho-on-the-side.
Funny thing is, Kiwis have gotten so staunchly solidaritized in their bog avoidance, that the pubs have taken to bust-a-gut plants, or, as I see them, undercover black ops bust-a-gut saboteurs. Frequently now, the bust-a-gut party poopisser is accused of being a paid off underminer.
Anyway, that’s my long way of saying New Zealander smay still be one up on us…

okay
this has clearly gone on long enough. GMJ is not even in the top ten percent of all time Rangers, especially when you are looking solely at on field production. But if you take into account other less tangible factors (acquisition cost, salary/value, departure benefit) then I think he actually has quite a bit more, but he is still no where near the top of the list. I might reconsider if Ramirez and Main one day make up 2/5 of a world champion starting rotation. That, along with “the catch”, might sneak him into the top 50.
I wouldn't say
top 50 means “one of the greatest rangers of all time.” Just look at AJM’s list — not exactly inspriring….

Same here
I liked the guy when he was here, and I happy to see him put together a nice season and score a huge payday from an owner not named Tom Hicks. I don’t wish ill will upon GMJ (though I didn’t care for that parting shot mentioned above), but I find it hilarious that his ridiculous albatross of a contract is clogging up the payroll and roster of the team I hate more than any team in baseball.
The only thing that could make this better is if, to protest his lack of playing time, he started parking his car in Scioscia’s reserved spot and Scioscia got towed for parking in a handicapped spot ala Bill Lumbergh. I hate Mike Scioscia.
Keith Law: (1:45 PM ET ) I think Michael Young should shut his mouth and move to third base.

And anyone who questions his motives for taking the contract in the first place is hypocritical and delusional
Are you implying that GMJ signed with the Angels at 5/50 because he is secretly trying to help the Rangers by playing poorly while eating up salary? If that’s true, he really IS one of the greatest Rangers ever,

But I suspect (based on my total lack of actually baseball insider knowledge) that playing CF might be the last part of his game to return after his long layoff. Defensive jumps in the OF, especially CF, has GOT to be all about instinct, doesn’t it??
+1
Hamilton doesn’t have a problem with the athletic tools to make him a good CF and I don’t think he was looking bad at CF when he was originally drafted and in the Rays system. I think this season will be pretty telling about if he can play a good CF.

In that case
I think it would depend on how Cruz is playing. if Cruz is doing good you simply keep Borbon down and continue with what you’ve got. if Cruz is struggling and has been released or benched then bring Borbon up and move Hamilton to RF
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I bring Borbon up if he's proved he can be a leadoff hitter
with plus defense in CF. No matter what. We need some game changers on the base paths to set up the power we have. But at that point, I would imagine one of Murphy or Cruz would have to be traded…and this all assumes, of course, that Byrd is traded or signs as a free agent elsewhere this offseason

Do you bring up
Borbon this year and put him at the top of the order? I don’t think you do that midseason unless your offense craps out.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
no, apparently Kinsler's going to be the guy again
unless he gets injured. knock on wood.
but towards the middle/end of the year, hopefully Borbon is ready, called up and playing the 9th role in the lineup and ready to challenge for the top of the lineup in 2010, with everybody moving down a spot in the lineup except Young. of course, it’d be tough to go righty/lefty in that circumstance, but you can’t have EVERYTHING

Well
personally, I don’t see the deficiencies . I see a dude who has plenty of range, good instincts and a howitzer for an arm. Certainly better than anything we had prior to GMJ (other than Tom Goodwin).

Its a few bad jumps
Hes not exactly the most fluid out there and occasionally seems to misread a ball off the bat.
On the upside his arm keeps people from trying to take an extra base on him a lot.
But mostly the question is if moving him from CF to RF would make him more likely to hold up over the course of a full year. Plus hes a much better defender in RF as opposed to CF, at least stats say so.
Umm, good arm, maybe?
But see my post below.

which is why people dont' like to trust the arm
and the camera rarely lets you see what kind of jump a guy gets on the ball. most defensive stats say he should be getting to a lot more balls than he does.

I hear ya...
I’m still learning the ins and outs of zone ratings, range factors and what not. Eventually I’ll get around to figuring them out but as of right now all I have to make a judgement on a players defensive prowess are my own two eyes.

-1 credibility

at least I’m honest though…

Say what, foo'?
In center field, it’s another story. Josh Hamilton ranked 30th among MLB center fielders under John Dewan’s plus-minus system with a -13. He was (by far) the worst MLB-regular center fielder at allowing runners to take an extra base. Runners succeeded in taking an extra bag when they had the opportunity to do so .669 of the time the ball was hit to Hamilton. That figure is about .100 higher than MLB average (most regular MLB center fielders were in the .550 – .580 range while the best were in the .470 – .520 range). Only one other MLB-regular center fielder was worse than .600.

Exactly
and a quick look at the stats show that Hamilton and GMJ in CF were not very different players. Its just Hamilton doesn’t have that one highlight reel catch to hang his entire hat on.
At least Hamilton is a legit all world level hitter.
right now
I’d bet Byrd is our best defensive CF who is likely to break camp with the team. I’d bet its not likely that close either.
if he duplicates last year
then yes, he is the best.

Though right now
I’m not sure our best offense doesn’t have Cruz in Right, Hamilton in center, and a platoon in left.
and i agree with that as well
as does the rangers brass most likely.
although i’m not sure

I don't know.
I think Byrd in CF, Hamilton in RF and Cruz in LF would be a decent approach both offensively and defensively

Byrd or Boggs
if Boggs is here?
I guess I saw some ratings where Boggs was an above average LF, passable in CF…
but it seems as though he’s pretty good in CF?

Why? you did it from ’99 – ’04…you should be really good at it.
I love it.
the more drama and distractions Scioscia has to put up with, the better.

I hope MLB comes down hard again on his windbreaker wearing
He and Terry Francona were told to amend their uniform habits last year for looking like slobs.
(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"

I hope they don't
After watching Tommy LaSorda wear a skin-tight baseball shirt for all those years, I’ll take the windbreaker on a manager A.N.Y.D.A.Y.
