Tragic quote by Tom Hicks
We’re three years into the (Jon Daniels) plan. It’s taken me six years to learn there are no shortcuts in baseball. I know that now. We have a great nucleus of position players so we don’t have to spend money there on free agents. We can put all our resources into pitching. We’re just not going to give any seven or eight-year deals to pitchers. It just doesn’t make sense. I don’t know of an example of where that has ever worked out.
"[Font} doesn't turn 19 until the end of May and his heater can already hit 99 on the gun. That's baseball porn." - Jason Parks
He may need to give a 7 or 8 year deal to Feliz if he develops into the next Pedro.
I tend to agree, though, that I can’t see a pitcher coming on the FA market in the next couple of years that is at an age for which a 7 or 8 year contract puts the bulk of the contract prior to the typical decline phase.
JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!
Agree on both counts
If Feliz somehow does become the next Pedro, I’d go ahead and sign him to a lifetime deal. Buy out the arbitration years and all the possible free agency years until age 50.
Keith Law: (1:45 PM ET ) I think Michael Young should shut his mouth and move to third base.
at what point? after his rookie season (full year)?
after 3 years in the league? after he wins his first Cy Young? Where is it beneficial for the team to buy him out? If we wait 3 years, he’s likely to want a ton more than originally…but at the same time, if we don’t wait, he could flame out.

Rangers spring ERA 5.62...
and that’s only the ninth highest? Spring training numbers are goofy.

I'm too lazy to calculate it but
I wonder what the ERA is for the pitchers projected to make the 25 man roster. It has got to be better than 5.62.

normally kind of a hitters heaven. Hitters numbers normally look real good, and pitchers, not so much.

Frankie had the one terrible outing where he gave up like 4 and Eddie had a few multiple run innings. Dont think CJ has given up a run yet. Not sure id group him there.
I think those groups are the locks and the ones competing for the open spots

As far as that damn addictive link shroom gave this morning, I’ve got somewhat of a pattern down now, but keep getting hit between 21.5 and 23 seconds.
Damn you shroom. That was a wast of 40 minutes!
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
ha
Yeah, I made it to 21.5 secs a coupla times. Up to 12 is a simple deliberate pattern. 12-18 secs things get tougher, but it’s quite doable. After 18 secs it’s just running to daylight until you get tagged.
I keep getting stuck right around there
My highest is 28.3 and I’ve gotten near that a few times. These things are addicting as hell.

Setting him up for a bullpen role?
Wash says it because he wants him to get his adrenaline going which doesn’t happen in minor league games. Sound like a weak explanation. If they expect him to be a starter, even if he starts for OKC then you would think its more important to get innings in than to pitch in higher pressure situation. And how much higher pressure can it be? Its spring training after all. Any pressure he feels, he’s putting on himself because he knows his job is on the line.

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Jay Cutler
per rotoworld:
A source tells FOX 31 in Denver that the Broncos were “definitely trying to get a trade in place and there is no doubt about that” during talks involving Matt Cassel and Jay Cutler last month.
Coach Josh McDaniels was allegedly willing to deal Cutler due to “concerns about Cutler’s alcohol consumption (given his diabetes) and because he’s "not that (football) sharp.” The Vanderbilt graduate scored a 26 on the Wonderlic, but there are concerns that Cutler doesn’t “manage games” well.
This has been pretty awesome to watch unfold, but this latest bit kicks it up a notch. I would love to be a fly on the wall the next time Josh talks to Jay.
“No, it’s not that we think you’re an alcoholic, per se, just that you drink far too much alcohol for a diabetic. And it’s not that we think you’re stupid, per se, you’re just not "football smart”. Understand, buddy? Are we good now? Oh, and yes, we did try to trade your retarded, drunk ass for a one year wonder who hadn’t started at QB since high school. Glad that’s out in the open now."
I think my 9 year old...
is more mature than Jay Cutler.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
in this case
it is hard to pinpoint who to blame. Josh and Jay have both come off as petulant children throughout this process. And if 30 is the new 20, then yeah, they both are still kids.
This story just gets better and better...
BTW, does anyone besidesme think that Matt Cassell will be the next Scott Mitchell?
If he starts throwing left-handed maybe...
…seriously though, I am a little skeptical of this guy. Scott Mitchell is a good example of the guy who shines as an injury replacement, is coveted by quarterback-starved franchises, and then proves to be something less than Joe Montana.
We couldn't have known it at the time but we definitely killed the wrong Belushi brother.
That's my take...
Scouts and coaches DO get it wrong on occasion, but when I see a guy who could never be a starter (Cassell) or who don’t get drafted (Romo), I’m always a bit skeptical of any initial success.
Go answer Evan's questions:

BEST LINEUP
As usual, the Rangers will score their fair share of runs, and the Angels will have the most versatile attack. The A’s, however, can feature a lineup that includes Garciaparra, Cabrera, Holliday, Giambi, Jack Cust, Eric Chavez and emerging star Ryan Sweeney. Oakland’s O is anemic no more.
Our selection: A’s

Cust hits the long ball and gets on base
beyond that, he’s the league strikeout leader and has a dreadful average…
I don’t think you can say that Hank’s not as good as Cust if not better when he’s healthy, so let’s just count that as your discount on his health.

Jack Cust: OPS+ of 147 and 132 the last two seasons
Hank Blalock: career high OPS+ is 134 in a 58-game sample size. Highest OPS+ for a full season was 117 all the way back in 2003.
Jack Cust whoops Hank Blalock’s ass. Hate to admit it, but it’s true.
She was a grand old lady...
Or to put it another way
Hitting the longball and getting on base = pretty damn good. Strikeouts and low average = meaningless if you can do the other two things well.
She was a grand old lady...
using those metrics
you would take Cust over anybody on the current Rangers’ roster (as far as offense is concerned). Over Young’s best year, Hamilton and Kinsler’s last year…
And with Giambi, Cust and Holliday in that lineup, I guess there’s no reason to even THINK that our offense could come close to that production?

As a left-handed power hitter
Cust would be absolute murder playing half his home games in the RBiA. Adam Dunn would probably sue him for identity theft. I’d love to have him as our DH.
But as far as the rest of Oakland’s lineup goes (Holliday aside, and he’s hitting free agency in the winter) they’re pretty meh. They also play in the Oakland coliseum, which doesn’t exactly do anything for their aging, injury prone offense.
She was a grand old lady...
with Giambi Cust Ellis and Chavez, expect low batting averages
PECOTA:
Giambi .232/.346/.450
Cust .234/.375/.455
Ellis .248/.322/.394
Chavez .238/.319/.407
In fact, only one A projects to hit over .275, and that’s Holliday.
The Rangers project 4 hitters over .275, but that includes Frank Catalanotto, who might not even make the team.
The problem with the A’s lineup will be power. Only 3 project a slugging average over .410 Only 3 Rangers project a slugging average under .410
Cust v Blalock
Blalock’s best year was 2004, where he hit .276/.355/.500 while playing 159 games, all of them at third base, and was 7% better than average fielder there, for a total of a 5.8 WARP.
Cust’s best year was 2007, where he hit .256/.408/.504 while playing 124 games, 14 of them in left field, 48 in right field, and 62 games at DH. He was far below average in both left field and right. But his bat managed to produce 4.9 WARP.
Overall, Blalock’s managed 14.3 WARP in 7 years, only 4 of them as a regular. (one partial year to start, and injury shortened years the last two) but is still only 28. Cust has only managed 9.7 WARP in 7 years, but only the last 2 of them as any kind of regular. He’ll be 30 next year.
PECOTA expects more out of Cust than Blalock next year, with lines of .234/.375/.455 vs .264/.326/.438 in pretty close to full seasons for both of them.
Ira
And not even a funny one
I won’t repeat whats below, but Giambi Cabrera Chavez Garciaparra Holliday Sweeney is like an All Start team from 3 or 4 years ago. My guess is that the A’s brought in a bunch of veterans on one year deals to tide them over till their kids arrive. Their lineup has more holes than swiss cheese and so many possible injury worries that “scary” doesn’t even begin to describe it.
Kinsler has to be the best leadoff man in the game currently and Hamilton is one of the top 3 number 3 hitters. The insanity of hitting Davis 7-8 in the order won’t matter that much to a club that stands to hold only one weakness this year, and that’s Andrus at number 9.
We could easily see 3 40 home run hitters (Davis, Cruz, and Hamilton) and 2 more 30 home run hitters (Kinsler and Blalock)
If Cruz hits 40 HRs, I'll eat my hat
In fact, every thing you say we could “easily see” are in fact, improbable, if not longshots, depending on the player.
