The Bad Idea / Sweet 16 Thread!
So I was thinking about this the other night.
Who are the greatest Rangers to ever wear each jersey number, 0-99?
I'm sure a great deal of numbers have never been used, but let's go with it anyways.
There are obvious choices like #34, #19, #7, so on and so forth.
Managers also count! Who's more worthy of #2? Bobby V or Taylor T?
I think there should be debate on a few numbers here.
Go to work, kids.

For this reason only, per Wiki
Hit a tying two-run pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the 8th inning off of Roger Clemens during a nationally televised Monday night baseball game against the first place Boston Red Sox on August 25, 1986 at Arlington Stadium. The blast, Petralli’s second of his career, allowed Rubén Sierra to win the game with a home run in the bottom of the 9th as the surprising Rangers remained close to the California Angels in pursuit of the 1986 AL West title.
One of my favorite Ranger memories. Biased choice.

I remember this game very well...
…it was a HUGE deal that the Rangers were on MNB. I was 16 that summer and clearly remember watching both of those homers from the kitchen of my parents’ house. That was the summer that Clemens had a tremendous undefeated string going and really dominated the American League. It was probably one of the five biggest wins that the Rangers had to that point in franchise history.
And to top it off I got drunk with some friends afterwards. Great night.
We couldn't have known it at the time but we definitely killed the wrong Belushi brother.

Memphis losing last night hurt, but didn't kill me.
I had them in the Final Four, but losing to Louisville (or maybe it was UNC). Still have a shot to have 7 of 8 in the Elite 8 though. How is everyone else’s bracket doing?

Maybe.
All I know is, if the Final Four is Louisville, UConn, UNC and Pitt, my basketball pants are going to be flying all over the place.
Some people would be disappointed in seeing all four #1s make it, but to me, that means the system is working and we’re going to come as close as possible to finding out who the best team is.
by brettgardner on Mar 28, 2009 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Decent shot that happens...but tough games all around
Pitt vs Nova: Same story, different day. Get Blair in foul trouble, and you can beat Pitt. Nova did that in the regular season and won by 10 with Blair playing only 20 minutes.
UNC vs OU: Griffin vs. Hansbrough will get all the pub…but, the truth is UNC gets hurt by guards more than anything. Griffin is going to get numbers, but if Warren or Johnson can go Tyrese Rice, Vasquez, Toney Douglas, or Jeff Teague then that will be the difference. UNC has plenty of bigs to throw at Griffin.
Louisville vs Mich St.: If Louisville is locked in, I just don’t see the upset here. But, Louisville has had its demons this year with being ready to play, losing to UCONN by 17, Western KY by 14, and Notre Dame by a bizzillion along with close losses to inferior teams in Minnesota and UNLV.
UCONN vs. Mizzou: My 2nd favorite matchup to the UNC/OU game. Mizzou’s style has already taken down one top dog. And, their style should get them some looks before Thabeet can get there. UCONN will really miss Dyson this game and Austrie, Price and Robinson will have to be very good against the pressure. If there is an “upset” (I don’t think OU/UNC would be an upset at all) then this is my pick.

Good point about Louisville's demons
But if they play like they did tonight, MSU can book their flight home already.
I dig Mizzou (albeit through limited exposure), but I just don’t see it.

I don't see Sparty over Louisville either.
If I had to pick a lock for the Final 4, it would be Louisville hands down.
Nova has more than a fighting chance, they are the team who is 1-0 in the series this year after all. I just can’t pick against Pitt b.c. I have the past 2 weeks and they are like a cockroach…they just won’t die.

As far as Mizzou/UCONN
I got UCONN in that game, but if you don’t have a manbeast like Blair to throw at Thabeet, it would seem the next best thing is a system that makes Thabeet run and cover a lot of ground instead of camp in the lane and swat or alter every shot in the paint. If Dyson were healthy I would go 95% UCONN, but I don’t like Walker, Robinson or Austrie handling the ball against the press and Price is going to need help.

Indeed.
It was a quite a thrashing. Griffin is outstanding. Somewhere between Boozer and Kemp, I think, in terms of style, and probably in terms of production.
If it weren’t for those early knee problems, he’d be near flawless as a prospect. If he can acquire half of Malone’s moves, he’ll be unstoppable. Right now, he gets by on pure talent and strength.

OKC, if they get Griffin will already be better than the Mavs.

I have felt the same way about Green
I love his game, but Durant is a 3…not a 2! And Green is a 3…not a 2 or a 4!
They could probably get a heck of a return on Green, but they should just hang onto him until they have started to turn a corner. Then, you parlay him into depth, like you said, and that team becomes a contender.

Now only UNC needs to excuse itself from the big boy tournament to complete the trifecta of disgustingly overrated teams.
by SaltyGoesYard on Mar 27, 2009 4:42 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Care to re-think?
The UNC is overrated bit is a tired one. They are clearly, and have been all season, one of the top teams in the country. The Elite Eight has turned out to be pretty much what it is supposed to be…Elite.
UNC, UCONN, Pitt, Louisville, and OU are the cream of the crop, and they’re all still there.
Michigan State, Memphis, Syracuse, Villanova, Kansas and Duke have pretty much been the next teams in line all year (along with an inconsistent Wake team that wound up being inconsistent at the wrong time), just not up to the standard of the top tier.
Basically, Mizzou is the closest thing to a surprise in the Elite 8, and their athleticism and style of play had a lot of people thinking they could get here.
The first few rounds have been largely “boring”, but with the teams left, you may not see any better basketball than what we will see in the next 10 days.

And they win it
Cuse couldn’t get any stops at all when they needed it.
Griffin was great as always but Tony Crocker…wow.

UNC will be tough
And if the Sooners go down to them it will still be a great year since noone expected the Sooners to be where they are.
