I may have to go get an iPhone
I primarily use my Blackberry for emailing, and I've heard that the iPhone is less email-friendly than the Blackberry, so I'd pretty much decided to forego getting an iPhone anytime soon.
But then I read this item from Maury Brown about the At Bat 2009 app for the iPhone that MLB is offering.
Now I'm thinking maybe I should go get one, after all.

I was pretty disappointed yesterday
when I was stuck in town at three o’clock and couldn’t even load the fantasey baseball league page (much less any sort of page that would have allowed me to make a pick) without safari crashing. But I am definitely looking forward to this app. Two days early too.

Yup.
Yahoo Fantasy Football loaded fine for me, but Safari is incapable of loading ESPN or Yahoo Fantasy Baseball.
It’s really going to put a damper on my FA/waiver wire pickups this year.
I've noticed
that when I load a Yahoo fantasy site, I have to turn it from portrait to landscape or vice versa after it loads — then it is fine. It’s weird.

theres a nice freebie ap
that does yahoo fantasy sports.

they also have a pay version that will allow roster moves in the near future

I tried it out last night
and you can do roster moves on the free one. You can just only do it for one team per sport.
Its kind of cool but I dont think ill buy it since again i only have a touch and if im on wifi i can just do it on the website.
the preceding post was a great success.
yeah i'm not a big fan of that app
I’d rather just do it through Safari.

Tough to have blackout restrictions on a phone.
Unless they use the towers your using to determine your location and then figure which restrictions you fall under.

Like everything, it has it's pros and cons.
I have an iPhone, but I also have the first gen iPhone, which makes a difference. I pay 90 a month for service, which includes unlimited texting and the data plan.
I use the email client and while it’s not perfect it works just fine for what I need.
The best part are the apps, for sure. MLB has some killer apps, so does the NHL and NBA. Last year I used an App that let me watch highlights on my phone of Rangers games, while the game was still being played. I also use several different apps to listen to online radio, which is greatness.
If this app is just how they say it is, then the I know exactly what my next purchase is going to be.
And the full internet client is money.

I understand the appeal of the iPhone, but if I can save $40 a month at the expense of not being able to read my e-mails and surf the web right away, then I'd rather save some dough.
The iPhone just offers ammenities that I can’t really afford.

Well, here's the problem. It seems to me that these corporations are cornering society in with all of these technologies and ideas.
There’s a smell in the air out there that everything has to be faster, more efficient; the graphics have to be better, the chicks have to be hotter, everything has to be up-to-the-minute…
AT&T U-Verse offers a minute-by-minute stock report feature… to go along with the 10 other stock-specific network channels it broadcasts. The damn waiters at Fridays have those electronic notepads on their wrist to take your order and it still took them 10 minutes to get me my damn beer.
It’s just like man, we don’t have to live this fast. Nor do we need to appear to be. Especially in these tough economic times.
Everyone needs to calm the fuck down.

It wasn't a very good rant, but its how I feel sometimes.
The other side of the argument is that if you don’t keep up with these changing times, you’ll get left behind.
by oc on Mar 29, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions
Heh, I agree with your feelings but not your conclusions.
I do agree that all of the technology we have speeds up our lives dramatically and that there probably isn’t a huge NEED per say for this. It’s not like we’re constantly getting life-changing updates (though I can’t imagine going a few days without checking lsb now).
It’s that a lot of people are using technology for pointless reasons. Some may argue sports are, but following sports helps me relax, exercise my mind in a different way from med school, and gets me interested in actually going out and playing some of these sports. Needing internet on your phone to check the latest paris hilton update is ridiculous, but what else does a 12 y/o girl know to do with internet on their phone? OMG, jonas bros R 2 awesum!
Somehow, too many people have lost track of the internet being an information superhighway that allows you to become a quasi-expert on anything from cooking to culture to languages to music to 19 y/o low-A baseball prospects, and instead have become addicted to the latest triviality.

it's easy to see it from both sides
I have the iPhone and use it instead of getting a laptop to lug around. it’s worked so far. the best thing for me is Navigation and the ability to find any restaurants in any city you’re in just by typing “pizza” or “Italian.”
But being tethered isn’t fun. And the paranoia I get from my boss when we’re out on the golf course – every 10 minutes, “check e-Mail!!!” can get old.

I had a first gen iPhone ...
and then had to upgrade when it finally broke down. The difference in e-mail is night and day. So many of the features on the old one that made it maddening (like the abnormal charging jack and headphone jack) have been fixed on the second gen. I’ve found that e-mailing now is so easy that it’s almost effortless. If you’re eligible for the upgrade, I’d get it.

I had a problem with mine, went to the Apple store.
They fixed it, but what was interesting is I started looking into upgrading (I would have had to pay for the new phone of course). The hip, metrosexual Apple employee starts chatting me up and when I mention upgrading he tells me its not worth it for the price. That kinda threw me off a bit. So I didn’t.

i have the 3G and I love it
It’s absolutely a luxury, and I could give it up if I had to, but I definitely make the choice to have one.
The first At Bat app was cool just because you could pull up video highlights at the game if you wanted to see a replay. Now that you can sit in your seats at the game and have the audio playing — that is really cool. It’s absolutely worth the $10 — and I know how to jailbreak my phone so I could get it for free if I wanted to…
"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
hmm?
What is it about then? There are lots of things to do with a jailbroken phone — one of the benefits is you can hack the apps from the app store and get them for free.
"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
by Dirk Diggler on Mar 29, 2009 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions
that's pretty antithetical to the reason the jailbreak developers did it
which originally was to install 3rd party apps when it wasn’t allowed. Now, its about installing apps like winterboard that Apple won’t allow in the app store. Those guys didn’t make jailbreaking possible so you can steal from other developers like themselves – and stealing is exactly what it is.
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
and
even the people that help you get apps to your phone for free don’t want you to just steal them, they want you to test them and pay for them if you like it.

Ha
Oh, right ok. I really don’t think sites like www.appulo.us are about testing. Believe what you want to believe.
I also don’t have any “stolen” apps on my phone — I just know how to do it.
There is no “one thing” that jailbreaking is about. It is what it is — a way to get around Apple’s ridiculous restrictions — which leads to many different things you can do.

if you read any of those hacker sites or ripdev or hackulo.us
you would expect people to get upset about this. jailbreaking was not created for people to steal apps but apple is using evidence of stealing as ammunition in their fight to stop it. i guess you get a pat on the back for not stealing but it’d be better if you just didn’t associate jailbreaking to stealing again. last i’ll say about this but this did deserve a soap box.
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
No Apple is claiming that people don't have the right to modify their code
You seem to think I don’t know what I’m talking about, and that’s fine if you want to think that. But, I don’t need a lecture about which illegal activities are OK in your eyes. Technically, jailbreaking is illegal. So is “stealing apps.” But, one is OK in your eyes, and the other isn’t. I get it.

I don’t stand in line often – well, practically never. Maybe at a supermarket checkout. When it happens I talk to the people in the line. I only have an ipod touch, but its my favorite device I've owned.
I got 100 dollars in gift cards for itunes at christmas and went on an app spending spree… now I had to use “real” money to buy this app.
the preceding post was a great success.
Yeah
I hate the elitist attitude of apple.

Yeah...
the device itself is great, but some of the Apple elitists can be awful fanboyish.

My wife had the first iPhone and I had a Blackberry Pearl. I was constantly using her phone so I broke down last week and bought an iPhone. I regret nothing. The only thing I miss is the iPhone doesn’t have copy and paste but supposedly it will be part of the next software upgrade.
Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!
the switch
Having made the switch from blackberry to iPhone, I have to say that I disagree with your statement that the iPhone is less email-friendly. btw, At Bat 2009 does rock.

The iphones operating system is safari which is a product of wap 3.0/xx. wap 3.0/xx is the browser of motorola. crappy phones like the z9 or the razr. Nokia n97 is unlocked and you can pop a sims card right in. about the same price as the iphone. 32 gb internal memory plus can take an extra 16 gig, touch screen, tilts up, query keyboard, 3.5 g, 5 mp camera flash, wifi, symbian 9.4 and a lot more. iphone is 3g wifi, 2 mp camera no flash, safari par being of motorola, touchscreen and pay a lot more with being a cingular phone. No who do you think is better when you drop the iphone its done and the iphone is the most stolen phone in the world.
Please
Don’t talk about something that you are totally clueless about. The iPhone runs a modified version of Mac OS X. Safari is the web browser, which is a full webkit browser. It is not a WAP browser by any means and has absolutely nothing to do with Motorola.
i had a razr
and lol @ comparing its browser to the iphones even if they have some code connection.
the preceding post was a great success.
they are EXACTLY the same!!!
dont tell me anything different!
hey dshep – you have an xbox right? i need to get a game for my lil bro (sr in high school) – any suggestions? non FPS category?

i feel like people that make these comparisons have never used an iphone
i have respect for nokias but no touchscreen is as good as the iphone and the browser isn’t anywhere near the quality of the iphone. those phones are decent on paper but in the end are just really clunky and bloated and don’t work as well.

i have an hour commute to school
i fill it listening to a podcast and browsing the internet. I have about 5 websites I check every morning and its nice to be able to get that done on the commute and not at school (especially since there is no internet in class).
Sometimes I’m on the bus and want to do some reading and since I don’t use paper anymore, I keep all of my syallabi in digital form so I use the iphone to look up the assignment (less cumbersome than using the laptop)
Plus there is browsing for places to eat, directions to navigate the city, see if a bus is coming – all somewhat time sensitive, in that I get pretty pissed if it doesn’t load quickly. The bus thing is actually time sensitive in that if I can’t load the app fast enough, I risk missing the bus.
I don’t like taking my laptop out and my desktop is in another room so if I want to browse the internet while I watch TV, I use the phone.
If I’m damn near anywhere and I’m trying to remember a fact, I look it up on the iphone, where as before, I’d try to remember to look it up later and end up forgetting half the time what it was that I wanted to look up. worse still, I’d only remember that there was something I wanted to look up but not what it was, which is just about the most annoying thing in the world.
I’m sure there are countless other instances. Of course, not everybody leads the same life or has the same curiosity so maybe you don’t need one.
but i highly doubt it wouldnt’ be somewhat useful to most people.

"The same curiosity"?
I never said it wasn’t useful, but it just sounds like you’re lazy most of the time and rely on the phone’s capabilities to bail you out at the last minute.
I guess I don’t have the insatiable need to browse the internet or look up cases on the way to class.
I have no real problem with any of the applications you’ve mentioned being on a phone, but some of the uses you’ve mentioned seem extraneous at best, especially considering the price.

Yes, it sure is
One of many reasons is I have a mini-computer doubling as a phone.
But, I don’t really see where you are going with this.

That’s a lifestyle choice — to pay for the ability to do those things because you want to.

No commentary necessary.
Plus there is browsing for places to eat, directions to navigate the city, see if a bus is coming – all somewhat time sensitive
I agree those are time-sensitive, and that’s why I would have already found those things out by the time I’ve left the house. Now, if it’s an unexpected bus you need to catch, then I agree it could be helpful. Directions are the same, but I could see the benefit.
by brettgardner on Mar 30, 2009 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions
you are so wrong
-the first isn’t an instance of being lazy, it’s being efficient. its not always to school, for one thing. but even if it isn’t, that time would have otherwise been wasted doing recreational stuff or nothing. reading on the bus is the exact opposite of being lazy.
-not taking my laptop out isn’t lazy either. that thing eats power and fries my testicles.
-the whole point is that i don’t spend that time finding those things out ahead of time because I don’t need to. I can just leave and find those things out on the fly. plus, I don’t have to go to the restaurant I picked out ahead of time if I change my mind or if the restaurant is closed. I’m not scared of hopping on a random bus or going to a new part of the city because I know I can get back. And the bus thing doesn’t even tell me what bus to catch. It tells me if a bus is coming that instant (tracked by GPS) so I can figure out if I need to walk to a different stop or just walk.
You think I’m doing all these things to save time because I’m lazy but it never even occurred to you that I’m doing these things to save time because I use the time saved to do other things. I lead a much more efficient and organized life because of a pda phone and the iphone happens to be the best implementation of it. To me, it is well worth the money but if you have time to kill and don’t mind making your life harder for the cost, fine.
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
clarification
the bus thing is BOTH telling me what bus to catch and the GPS tracker
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
Yeah
Somehow those savages in the early 00’s scraped by with a less “efficient” lifestyle.
If you’re just a student, I don’t see what you could possibly be so busy with that schoolwork is the thing that gets bumped to the recreational/do-nothing time.
I’m perfectly efficient reading my shit and outlining at home. I have no job or contacts I can’t go a few hours without catching up on.
by brettgardner on Mar 30, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
lame argument
those savages in lived fine but I don’t need to live like them. You could use your philosophy to not embrace any technology. Somehow those savages got by on landlines and black and white TV’s and typewriters…
the iphone is clearly more efficient for what I deem a reasonable price that i can afford. argue the price, but arguing the efficiency is just ridiculous.
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
So keep arguing it
But no answer as to what you’re so busy with.

you really want to go there?
I don’t know what law school you go to but mine, there is a lot of work to do. I read a shit ton, I have three papers to write this quarter, independent research. Plus, I have to at least help out with my wedding planning or act like I’m involved.
Even recreational things require some planning. I like to meet up with friends and go to concerts. So if I go to a concert Tuesday night, the only time I have to read might be wed. morning on the bus – most efficient allocation of responsibilties.
If you have free time, mazel tov. I feel like I have less and less.
(all this undercut by the fact that I’ve spent an hour posting but the quarter started today and I have no class).
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
Spare me.
I have at least 90 pages a night, 3 papers myself and numerous competitions. I’m not doubting that you have school work—in fact, quite the opposite. I’m shocked that you have so much time for other stuff that you need to plan your school work around it.
I have no time for concerts. If you do, “mazel tov”. You truly are the master of efficiency. Let me return to my writing slate on which I keep my outlines. In fact, I’m chiseling this right now and sending it on horseback to a transcriber who will relay by telegraph my admonitions to a magical box with letters all over it.

iPhone has become a necessity...
Aside from the fact that I am posting this from my iPhone right now, there’s just nothing I can’t do with this thing. In fact, it does so much that I’m not sure I can live without it now. It easily doubles my efficiency…that is, as long as I’m not wasting too much time having so much fun with it.
Like another poster says, I don’t have to carry my laptop anymore.
Apps like MLB 2009 are just a bonus, but i can publish to my blog any time I want (with pictures), check weather radar and “seeing” conditions, I’m an astronomer), control my PCs remotely, Facebook, and even play Wolfenstein 3D. ;)
It is my iPod for music. It’s a portable DVD player for traveliing with the kids. It’s my PDA. And, oh yeah, I can even talk to people if I want. He’ll, I can even stream The Ticket.
IPhone OS 3.0 will come out soon and it will add even more features like copy/paste, landscape keyboard, and p2p networking.
It costs an extra $30 a month, plus the price of the phone, but that’s nothing, especially since the apps costs next to nothing (or nothing). It’s powerful and fun to boot…I have 6 pages of apps, and they all get used.

it’s pretty cool, can do just about everything the iphone does really except it doesn’t have the vast application library to choose from (but BB keeps saying they’re going to have something similar).
It’s a good alternative if you are stuck on Verizon….

One thing not mentioned
if you aren’t’ on ATT already, I think the network is one of the worst – or Verizon is just so much better. That was the case both in Baltimore/DC and the case here in Chicago. The actual phone capabilities of the iphone blow and from what I’ve heard, they are better on the verizon pda phones.
I can still make and receive calls 95% of the time but there have been a number of times where I’ve had to suffer through staticky phone calls and then use a friend’s Verizon phone to finish the call.

The iPhone is the greatest invention since....um....baseball!!!!
If you have never played around with an iPhone, then you don’t understand all it can do. The average iPhone user doesn’t even know all it can do……unfortunately.
If you get one……..you will suddenly find all sorts of things you can use it for that you never thought about before, trust me.
