CJ Wilson 7.1 IP 8 SO 2 BB 2 H 0.00 ERA

These are some dominant numbers. CJ is feeling good and is not having to pitch in pain. His mechanics are back to optimal and he has been impressing the Rangers staff. He is throwing hard with good control and getting strikes.

Meanwhile FF has a 4.50 ERA in ST. 10 IP, 4 SO, 10 H, 1 BB, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 1 HB. At this point is there any reason not to think CJ should be our starting closer?

Not really going to sway many people with that. Is there any reason Franky shouldn’t be the closer?

by slimshadty12 on Mar 29, 2009 10:47 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes,,,

One, it’s spring training. Two, he’s coming off a year he was injured and got roughed up.

Also, please remember he’s not throwing against each team’s “A” lineup as he goes in towards the end of ST games.

Although I am beyond fired up with CJ’s spring, I’m still all for Fx2 starting the year out as our closer.

My cool sig.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.

Because Frankie outperformed him last year?

Or do less than a dozen innings in spring training trump what has happened in the past?

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 29, 2009 11:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

well

they did for Lou Piniella, but that’s neither here nor there.

Closers are like running backs in the current era…any team worth anything has at least two closer-esque guys.

Piniella is killing me

I had no idea Gregg was in the running for the closers job. I have Marmol on both my fanatasy teams.

he's still a great addition

to any fantasy team, middle relievers/set up guys are so underrated in fantasy baseball, especially whne a guy like scot shields or marmol or hong chi-kuo can rack up great K rates, low ERA’s and WHIP and can go a long ways towards helping you win pitching categories

Okay.

To defend him a little he’s not being that outrageous. Was arias the starting shortstop for half of last year? was chad tracy the starting left fielder? was mauro go down my green tunnel lopez the DH last year? NO.

But CJ was the closer last year so it’s not like he’s just pulling out something from his ass just cause CJ is having a good spring. Plus part of spring training is to see what you’re working with, who is working and who is not. You can’t judge a lot by it, you got to give frankie a chance in the regular season and see what happens. But I don’t think this post deserves this much smartassness.

I think alot of fans are going to be surprised by the 2009 CJ Wilson

Seriously he has better control, better velocity, more physical ease and comfort than ever before. It is very telling that RW himself states that CJ is overmatching ever hitter in our club – a pretty strong statement.

The guy had to pitch all of last year with loose bodies as big as teeth inside his elbow – something that really falls to blame on lousy team sports medicine. It is surprising that more attention is not given to this situation given that the 08 team had probably the highest disabling injury rate in the league.

Even more important though is that he has been assimilated into Texas culture. Before, most people just saw him as an enigmatic outsider. Now people see him as the sportsman/NRA member. He even has a lifted F250 Powerstroke. He’s one of “us” now.

Lousy team sports medicine?

He went most of last year telling management that he wasn’t hurt but come to find out he was hurt in the offseason and never came clean.

Keith Law on Greg Golson, "He's similiar to Cameron and Hunter in that all three are black."

by boomer1 on Mar 30, 2009 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's not really accurate.

While CJ is a highly competitive and driven athlete and most athletes will try to perform thru some minor discomfort, he was given wanton advice when he approached staff about the inability to straighten out his elbow. Rather than perform a 20 minute CT scan to look for chips in his elbow (as most competent staff would) they advised an ultrasound and perhaps some cortisone injections. Continuing to pitch with the chips in his elbow would have been a career ending move. The indisputable proof of the dire situation was revealed in Yoakam’s surgery.

But even ignoring this case, is it somewhat interesting the abnormally high rate of disabling injury in our camp? I’d be interested in seeing what out rate of injury is compared to other clubs

by eclou on Mar 30, 2009 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

CJ himself told Norm on The Ticket last year

He knew he was hurt and did nothing about it during the offseason because he wanted to play.

Well I think Connor had some to do with several pitchers being hurt. I can’t prove this just my opinion. So we will see how Maddux does. Every team has injuries some years more than others. See the A’s and Halos so far this year.

That's great

I hope he does well. I think he will have a solid season. If he ended up as the closer, that would be fine.

But I don’t see any reason, after their respective performances last year, to remove Frankie as the closer and make C.J. the closer.

How many saves will FX2 have to blow before CJ is handed back the keys?

I’m not saying he will, I hope he doesn’t . Just wondering how long you think they’ll hang in with FX2 if things get bad.

i'd assume

if after 10 relief appearances the he is something like 5 for 9 in save ops with an ERA north of 6 and a whip north of 1.6 and throw in a few losses, he’d lose the job. other than that, i don’t think loses it before 10 games unless he’s REALLY off
