so I just picked up Andrus as my utility infielder in fantasy baseball...
what is the legitimate upside we could see from the kid this year?
MLB.com has him projected to hit .271 with 28 steals, and my team is weak in the SB department…it was either Andrus or Theriot, and I figure he could do just as well as Theriot and he’s a Ranger, so why not give him the nod?

I can see where they’re coming from though, combining his minor league numbers and his spring…but I would guess .250 would be a better estimate. Either way, sadly, I’ve got no Rangers, so I’d take a .250 average with a shot at 40 SB over a steady .288 with 30 SB.
This is what happens when Kinsler, Davis and Hamilton all go for double the draft $$$ than what they are projected at.

i love the Rangers
but this guy is a 9 hole hitter who will struggle to hit an empty .270. I would think there were better options out there. Take a flier on Ian Stewart or even Teahan before Andrus.
I tend to be optimistic in "the unknown."
care to throw out what projections, BA/OBP/R/HR/RBI/K/SB/total bases for him? and then, what ceiling you think he could reach if he “gets it” earlier than you expected at the plate?

As for a more optimistic projection, I suppose you could swing the BA up to .280, but most of the other numbers would stay around the same (I was probably already optimistic)
If you need steals and average, go get Crisp, or my personal favorite, Spilborghs. If you specifically need a SS, Khalil Greene is available in a lot of leagues, and he’s had a great spring. Now that he’s finally out of SD, I could see him get his avg back up to .260-.270 with solid power numbers (20+ HRs).
it doesn't have to be a SS but it has to be an infielder
and I need the steals more than anything else…
it was basically between Theriot or Andrus in my mind. And I think Theriot will be the better player this year, but my Rangers bias is making it a tough choice

if you specifically need
an infielder and steals, Andrus is probably as good as anyone. It’s too bad there is no way to value defense if fantasy baseball, because he’d be gold then.

for Rudy Darrow. I remember hoping he would be one of the arms the Rangers got back when dealing Laird. He is groundball-inducing sidearmer who can hit 94 mph. I wouldn’t have minded having him in our bullpen this year.

Does anyone else question the logic of releasing
veteran relievers (Donnelly, Gobble) before the rosters are set given that most of our bullpen has been injured throughout the spring (and still is)?

well Donnelly
was only one day before his opt out date, but he sounded like he was willing to stick around. I do question it, because I don’t buy all the positive articles lately. Rupe benefitted from some great defense behind him in his scoreless inning yesterday…he wasn’t exactly inducing weak dribblers. And Madrigal has given up 9 runs in his last 4 innings, and yet he seems to have a spot locked down as well.
As far as Gobble, it was pretty clear he wouldn’t make the big league squad. he didn’t fit the need once Guardardo came back.

whoever is in the 5th spot is a placeholder for Feliz/Holland when they get called up and the comes when McCarthy goes down.
That said, I think feldman gives the Rangers a better chance to win in April. Either way, the organization makes the decision, not me.

I've had lots of knee problems
so I pay attention to knee problems in others. I’ve never heard someone talk about tightness in the patella tendon. Its not a tendon that is often put under a lot a stretching force.

A few years ago we had

RHP Derrick Turnbow ended up not making the trip to Scottsdale because of a swollen right knee that he suffered during Sunday’s outing. Turnbow was supposed to pitch on consecutive days to give the Rangers an idea how well he’d bounce back.
Turnbow becomes the third pitcher on the bubble to deal with a recent injury: RHP Willie Eyre has been dealing with a sore groin and was not up to throwing live batting practice Monday, which had tentatively been the plan for him; RHP Dustin Nippert is supposed to throw live batting practice tomorrow after dealing with a sore back muscle for nearly two weeks.
• 1B Chris Davis left Monday’s game with a sore left patella tendon. Davis, who was 0-for-2 before leaving, has 71 at-bats this spring. He leads the team in at-bats.

Semi OT: Just got tickets for the Red Out Friday game
Not a bad deal at all. Got down in Section 39 (first base corner box). They also had firs and third base side outfield lexus club seats for only 10$. Sucks its the Royals but still a nice price for good seats
