McCarthy Out
Per TR's blog:
RHP Brandon McCarthy will not pitch in Friday's Spring Training game. He has some shoulder soreness, the Rangers are hoping it isn't serious, but they are not saying when he'll be able to pitch again. More on the website later.
I was really hoping we wouldn't hear about a McCarthy injury this spring. So much for that.

I have a difficult time believing we’re not going to give up 925-950 runs.

I never thought McCarthy could be counted on
to do much this year which accounts for most of my thoughts regarding the team, specifically the starting pitching.

But you thought McCarthy was going to be the savior of the rotation? How many runs would the team give up if he started a full season?
by FuturePants on Mar 4, 2009 10:34 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Future Pants,
I’m not sure on the runs allowed total. I’ve read a lot of different projections (from non-Homers) that have the Rangers giving up 900-920 runs but i’m still processing info.
Across the board, everybody seems to believe the Ranger offense will be taking a major step backwards.
The search for reasons this thing doesn’t lose at least 90 games became a little more difficult.

right
every year he’s in the best shape of his life, then takes the mound during ST and his body falls apart shortly thereafter. After days then weeks of rest and rehab, it’s discovered the injury is more serious and he’s out for an extended period, only to return late in the season for a truly meaningless cameo that produces more soreness then being held out for the last few weeks. We’ve been through this drill before.

Wasn't it just yesterday...
…that McCarthy was talking about throwing full speed and that he was gaining confidence and that, while he was getting sore, he was learning that it was only soreness and not injury? That was yesterday, right? I guess today he – or someone – thinks soreness = mild injury?
by FuturePants on Mar 4, 2009 10:58 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
McCarthy
It is possible that, given his injury history, the team is overly cautious in their handling of him. The problem with this is that any apparent injury induces panic in the fan base (see above) but ignoring strains and soreness with McCarthy could lead to a more serious injury. I will worry when they say he is out for weeks and/or months. Until then it is just spring training soreness. I think everyone needs to calm down.

Stiffness and soreness are not the same.
Inflammation can cause both, but stiffness affects range of motion while soreness just affects the muscles ability to contract effectively. If you’re stiff, you’d better not throw full speed.

Update:
We talked with Brandon McCarthy and he said he had a little stiffness in his right shoulder after throwing a bullpen session Monday. He said he’s hoping to try and throw against Thursday and go from there. He will not make his scheduled Friday start. “We’re going to throw tomorrow and see if everything’s loosened up,” said McCarthy, who pitched two innings against Arizona Saturday. “It tightened up after my bullpen. The day off was nice and hopefully another day off with knock it out and loosen it back up.”

one thing to note
because this is such a long spring training, some teams aren’t even letting their actual projected starters pitch yet. check out the names of the guys who have pitched in ST games for the Rays so far. Not a single player is expected to actually make the rotation (it says something about their depth that they still have a far better ERA than the Rangers and most other teams this spring). so McPussy missing a start this early as a precautionary move is not the end of the world.

Let’s see if MLB would allow the Rangers to set up a tee for the other team and we just field a defensive pitcher. This would probably allow less HR’s at The Ballpark and we don’t need anymore pitchers.
I truly am tired of pitchers breaking down with the Rangers, no matter what the reason. It’s just getting old. It almost makes me miss pitchers like Bobby Witt. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, but at least could make their scheduled starts.

Only if it was Bowden + Hagadone
The way Salty is performing right now, there’s no reason to trade him unless you get a maximum return. If we’re going to wind up dealing a catcher out of panic over our what is becoming our usual spring pitching massacre, I think Max is a more likely candidate to be dealt than Salty right now, just based on how they’re performing. Or at least you would hope so. I’d hate to have hung onto Salty all winter only to panic and deal him for a Bowden/Bard package at the biggest the peak of his value since we accquired him.
