OT: Cowboys Release T.O.
Stuart Scott just reported it as breaking news on sportscenter.
Only link so far: http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/03/espn-reporting-to-released-by-cowboys.html
Titled: ESPN reporting T.O. released by Cowboys
They cite two sources. Should be a busy night here at the blog.
I sure am glad the local fellas were on top of this one. Should have known when Jerry said the word "roster" umpteen times the last time he was asked about it. Maybe now Dan Reeves will come back.
ESPN STORY: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3953647
The Dallas Cowboys have released controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith late Wednesday
So, where does T.O. go?
Do the Cowboys draft a young WR now?
RW2 is the #1, Crayton the #2, then a battle royale between Austin, Hurd, Stanback and any newbies for the #3-5 spots.

Why not?
The dude is a polarizing force in the locker room. Jason Garrett is spineless and calls predictable plays to get him the ball (The defense sees this coming a mile away). We have 3 solid backs and an offensive line built to pound the ball. Roy and Witten are still threats through the air. Lets run the ball and take some pressure off Romo, get the play action going.
Sure the cap hit blows but I had no confidence heading into next season as long as that cancer was on the team.

No arguement here
After that abortion of the game I wanted both gone. Once it was clear Garrett was sticking around, I told myself some kind of drastic personnel change had to be made before I’d care about next season

you gotta worry about Crabtree and Maclin’s injury issues. Rookie WRs don’t do much anyways…
Maybe a Nicks or Bey as a 3rd WR, but i don’t know about being more active in the draft, unless you mean we’re trading picks for a WR (like boldin), but i don’t see that happening either…

And RW2 is our #1 WR as a result. I could definitely roll with Nicks or Bey but think they will go too high for us given the needs we need to address with the first few picks we have. Maybe Mike Wallac from Ole Miss or my boy Johnny Knox from ACU on the 2nd day.

Glad he's gone
Other than the fact that he’s a piece of shit in general, he’s not that great a receiver. He hasn’t had one breakout game (at least that I can remember) since he joined the Cowboys. Great receivers take over games, and when they aren’t taking over games, you always have the feeling they can at any time. I never even slightly had that feeling with TO. I think he just talked up his greatness so much that people started to believe it.

And it’s sort of frightening to think about:
Does T.O. take less money for a one- or two-year deal to go to New England and win a title?

You are, by association, a model NFL citizen. Moss goes deep, Owens goes deep, Welker over the middle…Brady throws 104 TD passes.

Washington and Oakland
From Rotoworld:
The Washington Post has confirmed that the Redskins will at least have internal discussions about free agent Terrell Owens.
Most teams will have the talk, but it won’t necessarily lead to anything. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen doesn’t believe Owens will end up in burgundy. It is worth noting that T.O.’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is on good terms with the Skins.

Both SI’s Peter King and Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post believe Oakland is the most likely landing spot for free agent Terrell Owens.
Al Davis needs weapons to support JaMarcus Russell, and the Raiders won’t worry about chemistry issues. Still, Owens might hesitate to go there. He’ll want to play in 2009, but hasn’t been on a perennial loser in a long time.

But if you insist on an old WR, what about Bobby Engram?
by GhettoBear04 on Mar 5, 2009 12:32 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd be fine with it, I guess.
But do you honestly think Owens’ age had anything to do with this release? Maybe any other 35-year-old, but not him.
Is there really a huge gap between Engram and Toomer? Honestly I’d only think about either because of Austin’s health history.
by brettgardner on Mar 5, 2009 12:36 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think Engram fits the Cowboys' needs better.
He’s a bit more of the quick, run precise routes from the slot type. Toomer does most of his damage using his ability to set up DB’s in man coverage on the outside.
Realistically though, Harrison is the only one out there who could be a difference-maker next year. They seem to have enough talent to be a run-heavy offense (both in RB’s and a run-oriented O-Line), but I’m not sure the defense is good enough to overcome not having a great offense. Especially the defense that is losing more talent than it is gaining…
by GhettoBear04 on Mar 5, 2009 12:43 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Losing?
Canty, Burnett, Tank, Jones, and Henry?
That’s one solid starter and a good backup between the lot. Those holes can be filled rather easily. It’s the secondary which was, and is still, the biggest problem.
by brettgardner on Mar 5, 2009 12:47 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
As well as Zach Thomas.
Though that’s probably a wash with Brookings.
They do seem like holes that could be filled easily, but the Cowboys don’t seem to have a lot of cap space to go after guys with. Not that there are that many guys out there to pursue for D-Line and LB. I feel a bit better about the corners now than I did before (thought would still like a better Dime CB than Ball), but I’m starting to wonder if the Cowboys are contractually obligated to not field to above average safeties at once. DMN blog seems to think there’s a lot of cheap DB talent out there. I’m not sure how cheap it actually is, but that’s definitely where I’d like to see the Cowboys go next.

Don't worry, the Cowboys will draft
Johnny Knox, WR, ACU in the 5th-6th round and he will explode onto the scene in camp, and win the #3 spot. He and Romo will form an instant chemistry and he will use his official 4.34 40-yard speed (scouts had him anywhere from 4.28-4.30) to stretch the defense, win offensive rookie of the year honors, and help the Cowboys return to glory with a Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots and their WR corp of Moss, Welker, and……………………T.O.

Oh and speaking of large human beings
The Cowboys ought to be able to snag a legit 3-4 NT at some point in this draft:
BJ Raji- 6’1" 337 Yea right, he is a top 10 guy
Ron Brace- 6’3" 330 2nd rounder probably, and it is not fair these 2 lined up next to each other
Chris Baker- 6’2" 326 2nd-3rd, ran a 5.02 40 and had 35.5" vertical
Sammie Lee Hill- 6’4" 330 3rd-4th, like Baker, he is a sub D-1 guy
Antonio Dixon- 6’3" 328 7th-FA, got hurt before 2008 season, but could be a bargain
Lot of big bodies, I would be happy with any of Brace, Baker, or Hill….and wish everyone would forget Raji is in the draft until our pick comes up.

We signed another ILB also, right after Brooking
Stewart (6-3, 239) was a fourth-round pick of the Falcons in 2001, spending the first four years of his career there. He started 29 games when Wade Phillips was the team’s defensive coordinator in 2002 and 2003, and also has experience under Joe Decamillis when the current Cowboys special teams coordinator was in Atlanta.
Stewart had a career-high 108 tackles in 2003, when he started every game. He has played inside and outside linebacker in the 3-4.
Stewart was with the Browns in 2005 and 2006. A torn shoulder muscle caused him to miss the entire 2007 season. He was cut by Arizona out of training camp last year.
The 29-year-old has 291 tackles and 8.0 sacks in his six full seasons out of Vanderbilt.

Well you can say they have needs at
S, ILB, CB, NT, DE, WR, OL, Developmental QB
I’d probably priortize:
1- Safety
2- NT
3- OL (Tackle)
4- ILB
5- CB
6- Developmental QB
7- WR
8- DE
I just think that if you want a WR to play right away, you are better off with a guy w/ experience, otherwise roll with what you got and maybe add a 7th/UDFA to the mix.

And to add
I think if you get a true NT, DE is less of an issue b/c Ratliff can slide out there some. I think Brooking can handle 1st and 2nd downs and hope Barbie Carpenter can replace Burnett, but I do want them to look for an ILB before the 5th round. I really want a Tackle to play behind Flozell and I’m not too high on Free. A young QB for 3rd string would be nice, but I would want an athletic CB first.

by SaltyDawg on Mar 5, 2009 12:53 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
From a talent standpoint, I agree.
But a safety or a WR is going to have trouble competing for a starting job from the start of the season. If you draft one of those early, you’re basically going to have to wait a year for them to develop (obviously, there are exceptions). However, you can plug in most highly drafted interior linemen from day one and be comfortable with it.
That’s why I’d rather see them address S and WR with stop gaps if deemed necessary and then look at D-line with their first pick. Man, if it weren’t for that TO extension, things would be so much nicer looking right now.
by GhettoBear04 on Mar 5, 2009 12:47 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I find it impossible to believe his "antics" actually hurt the team more than his play helps the team.
He may be worth less than his on-field production would indicate just looking at the numbers and the game tape, I’ll buy that. You can’t convince me that he’s actually a below average or replacement level or whatever player just because of his antics when he’s that good.
I don’t like the guy and I thought we might want to, for a few reasons, start planning on moving on after his contract, anyway, but it would take a whole lot of evidence to convince me the Cowboys are better in 2010 without Terrell Owens. And I don’t think that evidence is out there.
Coupled with the cap hit, it’s maddening. I won’t miss Terrell Owens per se, but I don’t like anything that I think makes the Cowboys worse.

This fucking sucks
We lose our top WR all because our pretty boy offensive coordinator isn’t smart enough to make changes and adjustments to get him open enough to get the ball. Thats fucking pathetic. You don’t go from one of the top offenses two years ago to a mediocre offense that bogged down last year when you add a RB like Felix Jones and add a WR like Roy Williams mid season unless your OC is a complete moron.

Exactly...
I mean I can’t believe our fucking OC went out there and led the NFC in dropped passes…
Look, I’m not saying Garrett was great, but answer a question for me: In the 13 games in which Romo played, how many yards per game did the offense average?
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.

Everybody drops passes
Get over it. Nobody currently on the roster or available can do what TO can do. The reason Jason Witten was such a force and able to be the #1 target of Romo was because defenses were focusing on TO. No offense to Roy Williams but he can’t do what TO did. He won’t draw the coverage TO drew.
To your question we averaged 259 yards per game passing in Romos starts.
But yards don’t tell the story. In Romos starts we averaged 24.7 points per game which is almost 4 full points below what they averaged last season.
And the simple eye test is enough for me. The plays were unimaginitive, the calls were predictable, and it showed on the field and on the scoreboard.
Did Arizona have trouble getting Larry Fitzgerald open when they needed to? And don’t try and tell me how much better he is than TO. Its all about the OC knowing how to make a defense guess. Garrett didn’t make anyone guess. Hell I was calling out plays as soon as they would line up because it was obvious what they were doing. If I can do that by only watching their games imagine what a DC can do after studying film for 60+ hours the previous week.

so who plays DT this year?
what about our safety positions? We only have a mid 2nd round pick and an early 3rd to address these needs on the first day. This team looks to have lost a lot of talent so far this offseason, and I honestly don’t think they have the football smarts in the FO to replace it with low cost alternatives.

Jay Ratliff is the DT. Spears, Hatcher, and Bowen are at DE. Right now. I think ideally, you’d like to find a prototypical 3-4 NT and let Ratliff play end.

can you think
of many examples of the cowboys dipping into the FA market for a low cost veteran and then getting solid value? it seems that teams like the patriots are able to plug holes that way every year, and yet the cowboys usually have to spend a small fortune to plug FA holes (Davis, Hamlin, etc) and at this point, the big names are off the board.

They can actually address S and NT with the 2nd and 3rd if they want to
Ron Brace (NT), WIlliam Moore (SS) and Patrick Chung (SS) could all be around in the 2nd round, though they would probably have to move up for Moore, and maybe Brace.
Chris Baker (NT) should be somewhere between late 2nd and middle 3rd round.
Sammie Lee Hille (NT), Chip Vaughn (SS), Michael Hamlin (SS), Chris Clemons (FS/SS) will all be 3rd-4th round guys.
The Cowboys have extra 2nd day picks they could use to move up a few spots, or they could slide down and grab another 2nd day pick. I think with the 3 NTs not named BJ Raji, you will see the Cowboys get one of them between rounds 2 and 4.

But watching them a couple of times this year and I have never seen two defensive players jump out at me the way Ray Malealalalalalalauga and Taylor Mays did. I’ve seen guys make ridiculous plays, but those two seem to be in on every ridiculous play. It may have been a product of how good that defense was as a unit, but I am a Taylor Mays fan.

Moore's a stud.
In ‘07, Mizzou’s d-coordinator let him play a true safety position, and he was a ballhawk, notching eight INTs and six PBUs while also ranking second on the team with 117 tackles.
In ‘08, Moore was a little banged up, and Mizzou’s d-coordinator played him closer to a nickelback position. That’s not his style, and it showed: only one INT (returned for a TD), six PBUs and 86 tackles in 12 games.
If Moore’s allowed to play safety instead of linebacker/safety, he’ll be pretty good in the league.

Olshansky, a 2004 second-round pick of the Chargers, has been a five-year starter, including for the three years Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips served as the San Diego defensive coordinator (2004-06). The 6-6, 309-pounder who turns 27 in May finished the 2008 season with 54 tackles and two sacks.Pro Bowl nose tackle Jay Ratliff also can play defensive end, but since the Cowboys aren’t going to bring back Tank Johnson, Ratliff and the recently-resigned Junior Siavii are the only viable nose tackles on the 80-man roster.

Jerry Jones on the release of T.O.
Terrell Owens was a very productive player who performed at a very high level for all three of his years here in Dallas," said Jones. "But we have made a decision to move forward without him.""In the aftermath of the season, we talked about change. Some of what is changing involves the process and some of it involves people. This is a decision that was made based upon consideration for an entire team. We will move on now with a new team – a new attitude – and into a new stadium. The evaluation process and the prospect for change will continue at every level of the organization."

You know...
I was listening to the radio this morning, and someone (I forget who) from Pro Football Weekly was talking about how there may be a couple of more guys who might have to go as well, guys who were in Owens’ camp and who are going to see this as him being disrespected by Jones after Jerry acted like T.O. was going to stay.
And really, that highlights what the biggest problem with T.O. was.
A few times, when there’s been discussions about what a distraction he was or about his complaining, people have said, “Well, some of the players agree with him.”
And that’s the problem. If he were Jeff Kent, a guy who is just a general a-hole that no one in the clubhouse likes, that would be one thing.
But Owens has been divisive everywhere he’s gone, he’s ended up splitting up locker rooms into factions that were pro-T.O. (or anti-McNabb, or anti-Garcia, or anti-Witten/Garrett, whatever).
He’s like the evil pied piper, getting some players to rally over to him and join him in his general dissension.
And that’s why cutting him may not necessarily solve the problem.

…and throwing the ball to T.O. on every play, and giving T.O. all the credit for any success the offense has, would probably solve the problem.

i agree for the most part
but, TO is one of those players who will speak his mind. He does not lie. Does not lie. And when he speaks his mind, players who think he’s saying what is true will side with him and those who do not, won’t…that’s just the way it is. What i don’t understand, is why so many athletes are such mental midgets that they let what other people say or do bother them so much. If TO complains about getting the ball, then let him complain, why does Tony have to be so weak minded that they need to force it…same with Garrett. Call your plays and don’t worry about it. It boggles the mind even the coaching staff (the coaches are there to handle these egos, that’s what head coaches do) is so one-dimensional.
TO is not the problem. Philly, San Fran, Dallas have done well with him and they haven’t won anything without him…
