Evan Grant is Back on the Beat
Evan has left the DMN and hooked up with the fine folks at D Magazine to kick off a sports blog http://insidecorner.dmagazine.com/
As Evan notes in his initial post, it won't be a traditional blog. Evan will be back in the clubhouse delivering the best in Rangers beat coverage. I too will be posting at D Inside Corner from now on.
Evan is on his way to Surprise right now and will be reporting on today's game.
Please bookmark http://insidecorner.dmagazine.com/ and make it a point to drop by frequently for your Rangers news.

Hope it works out well for the two of you.
I applaud you leaving DMN after they turned their back on the Rangers.

Congratulations on your new site and we all wish you nothing but the best. I’m sure a great deal of us will become regulars on your site. Congrats to you as well MJH.

I think we are about to read
quantum amounts of Tony Romo bashing from JJT for a while given what’s happened to TO.
JJT usually checks in as a media shield when the heat on Ron Washington gets turned on high. Look for JJT’s baseball column sometime in late April.
Wow. ESPN just reported that ARod is out for the next 10 weeks after having a cyst removed from his hip, meaning early June?

The WWL’s website doesn’t have it yet. If that’s true, wow. There are a whole lot of people regretting the fact that they’ve already had their fantasy drafts.

Good news
I gave up trying to sift through everything to find MJH’s stuff on DMN. I liked it better when he had his own blog. I need MJH/Newberg/Parks at ST asap to let me know who this year’s Holland is (I assume we will definitely have one of those every year, maybe NeRam this year?). I also need updates on everyone’s velo from ST. When do pitchers really start throwing their hardest? I’m especially interested in if Holland’s velo is where it was late last season. Heard he hit 95 in his first appearance but that’s no 98…..
Also, can’t hurt to have EG back at it.

Why? He's embiggened this conversation with a perfectly cromulent point.
I’m happy to have EG back bringing us more Rangers coverage, but there’s definitely a risk he’ll fade into obscurity at the D Magazine blog and/or the D Magazine blog won’t do well enough to retain his services and then he’ll be effed in the a with a J-O-B covering the Rangers at all, which would be sad.

But wasn't he basically
effed without a job he wanted to do anyway? Did Evan even remotely want to cover the Cowboys? Deciding to go somewhere else as soon as possible says he didn’t have any interest in that job. Heck if nothing else, he might be able to bring content to mlb.com or the new mlb.network in the future if D Magazine doesn’t work out. But why would he stay with something he was not only not interested in but just flat out disliked?
by Hull Fan on Mar 5, 2009 9:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with most of those points.
But I’m just saying that the Shark-Bot 3000 has a point when he says that this job may end up in failure due to circumstances beyond Evan’s control and that going from an established place like the DMN to an “Is that a real thing?” kind of a place like the D Magazine blog has some inherent risk to it.

D Magazine
is a pretty well established local publication. It doesn’t have any national cred, but it’s hardly a nothing. If Evan and Mike provide good coverage, people will click, link, and read, and it will become known as a good place for Rangers reading. I’m sure it also leaves Evan room to pursue other writing gigs as he can. No brainer of a move for me If I’m Evan.

Great news.
I knew Grant would land on his feet. I’m really looking forward to this project. And I’m relieved that he’ll still be covering the Rangers.

D Magazine
There have been some excellent questions brought up here about moving from a traditional news-gathering operation to a “magazine.” So let me try to put some kind of answer on here for you.
The traditional news-gathering operations are all in trouble as evidenced by the cost-saving “sharing” arrangement between the DMN and the FWST, the continuous announcements of layoffs, pay reductions and unpaid furloughts throughout the industry and declining circulation and ad revenue. It’s a strange time in the news business. Companies – and employees – are having to make decisions that they never thought they would consider.
Because of this, other non-traditional sites are joining the fray to grab readership in areas that were once completely controlled by the newspapers, but perhaps not so much anymore. There are more and more special niche web sites. And I think that is D’s strategy here, grab a niche audience (you, Johnny Ranger Fan) that has perhaps been under-served of late.
While Jamey and Adam have been among the front-runners in understanding that when it comes to the Rangers, D has been at the head of the curve in understanding the emerging general trend of people looking elsewhere for their news and analysis. D’s FrontBurner blog was the first general city politics/lifestyle/culture blog in Dallas and it has continued to evolve as others have rushed to join the blog world. SideDish, authored by dearest friend Nancy Nichols, is cutting edge on the food/restaurant world (look for me to make some appearances on SideDish as well, talking about food on the road and especially at spring training for the travel-minded).
The blogs at D are informative, witty and useful. The magazine has a strong brand within the city and with ex-Dallasites all around the globe. The hope is that Mike, Jeff Miller and I will help InsideCorner help the overall brand become even more recognized nationally as the internet becomes the No. 1 source for daily news and information. And listen, the magazine, is pretty darn good, too. I may make a few appearances in the magazine, as well, writing the really long features I’ve never had a chance to write because of space constraints at the DMN.
Listen, I can’t tell you how much I loved my 12 years at the DMN and how much I value the great folks there who are going through a very, very trying time. And please don’t give up on the DMN blog; Richard Durrett is blogging his butt off there, again under some trying circumstances. I’m so glad the DMN gave me a chance to introduce myself to you. And I’m very appreciative that D has given me the chance for us to continue our relationship. I hope you’ll help by spreading the word about InsideCorner and the D site (Dmagazine.com; frontburner.dmagazine.com and sidedish.dmagazine.com) to your friends who may not have found us yet.
Google is a great tool, but word of mouth always helps.

Personally
I think for the most parts both Magazines and Newspapers are dead. How well they transition to the internet is going to tell who the survivors. I don’t see any reason D will have a worse shot than DMN.
I know a lot of folks say that giving it away for free on the internet doesn’t make any sense.
Well guess what, Newspapers have always been giving it away for free. You know that subscription folks pay? About a third of it goes to the paperboy, a third to the distributor, and a third of it goes to printing costs. Subscriptions mostly cover the cost of printing and distribution, and thats about it. They just need a paid subscriber base so they can sell ads, which is where the money has always been in newspapers. Now they have webpages, they just need to figure out how to sell ads on those.
I think D is just as capable of grabbing an audience on the web as DMN is. DMNs subscription base is about to become a big liability, because a lot of the costs in distribution, printing and distribution, are fixed, and as the base shrinks, DMN is going to be unable to cover their costs of distribution.

Thanks for the info Evan. I have occasionally flipped through the pages of D Magazine at my doctor’s office. Sounds like I need to dig further into thier website.

D Magazine is really very good.
They’ve won some awards and broken many major stories in Dallas.

Seems like D has great Dallas coverage via blog.
Plus I went to high school with Tim Rogers and have read his stuff dating back to his weekly column on, ah, whichever Dallas weekly shut down in the last ten so years. Blanking out. but I’m a fan of his work.
Anyway totally enjoy.
