Evan Grant's things to watch today

Evan Grant runs down his "things to watch" for today, with Brandon McCarthy and Andruw Jones leading the list.

According to Grant, McCarthy's shoulder stiffness is something that McCarthy believes is normal for spring training and something that just gets worked through, but the organization wanted to err on the side of caution given his injury history.  Regardless, he's going to pitch in the B game today, and if there's a setback, health-wise, for him, we might have to expect to see Kris Benson or Jason Jennings in the rotation to start the season.

Erring on the side of caution with McCarthy

Not a bad thing at all.

where can we expect these from?

has a site mentioned that they would be sending updates this morning? Because of McCarthy, I am just about as intrigued by the morning game as I am by the afternoon one (with Hunter and Feliz).

I wish

They would have Feliz pitch tomorrow…..so we can actually watch him.

Probably Evan will post some updates.

Maybe Parks will send something back to the BBTIA folks.

Vizuel and the utility job

kind of interesting that Grant doesn’t think Vizquel’s a lock there. I guess we all just kind of assumed that Vizquel could handle any infield position.

But even if that is the case, does this automatically mean that Vizquel doesn’t start the season as the starting SS?

I can't understand...

why the Rangers wouldn’t start him at SS for a month while Andrus is in AAA (although I would probably keep him at OKC for 2-3 months).

The service time issue alone makes that a slam dunk move imo.

However I’m getting the impression that Andrus is going to be the starting SS from the get go, which I’m not a fan of.

struggles

One reason to keep him as the opening day SS is that it would be difficult to justify bringing him up if he is struggling in AAA. Let him struggle at the ML level.

And lose a year...

of service time?

Why not let him struggle in OKC instead? And if he struggles that bad, why bring him up at all. Would it really be horrible if he spent the entire year at OKC?

The real important thing in MY is not playing SS now.

I agree

I am confident that JD will take everything into account when they decide their starting SS.

If he is struggling at the AAA level

why not just leave him at AAA. At his age, its not that terrible of an idea.

i wasn't so clear

what i actually meant was that arias might supplant vizquel as the starter.

Ahh...

I’m ok with that as long as Arias can actually make the throws. Problem is I have about as much faith in Arias’ shoulder right now as I do in a Rangers starter winning the Cy Young this year.

my thinking might be convoluted

but i guess the way it might go down is they decide arias and duran (between themselves) can handle all SS/backup infield duties and that vizquel doesn’t really add enough if all he can do is play a good defensive SS.

But, I don’t know if that makes much sense – was vizquel being a good backup necessary for him to get the starting SS (UI later in the year) job?couldn’t they just try to trade vizquel later in the year when andrus is ready?
