Volquez pitching now on ESPN2 for DR in WBC.

Volquez started the game giving up an infield hit, sac bunt w/ error.  Walked the next batter with full count and then a wild pitched scored the lead off man.  Next batter hit it hard up the middle and Hanley Rameriz knocked it down but threw it away and two more scored.  Volzuez struggled with his command but had a nasty slider he got one batter on.  The reds are limiting him to just 60 pitches so im guessing he just has one more inning left, if that at all.

I guess this could be the WBC game thread!!  Have fun!!

Cant wait till 2 pm baby!!!

The Volquez-Hamilton deal...

will turn out to be an epic win for the Rangers. I just don’t see it with Volquez, never have. If he was in the AL he would still be getting pounded.

The worst thing about being a Rangers fan.....hope.

He has nasty stuff, just can't control it...

I guess if he figures the control issue out, he will be ok, but I still think the Rangers win.

The worst thing about being a Rangers fan.....hope.

I agree completely

I just don’t see him getting away with these walks when he is not only facing an extra hitter each game, but facing much better teams. He’d still probably be our best starter by far, but I think he’d look more like a number 3 starter than an ace like he did in Cinncy last year.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Agreed

If he reverts back to his old self or some form of it this will be a huge win in the trade dept. Stick that in your pie hole Josey.

I do think the trade is a "win"

for Texas, but I also do think Volquez is/will be a very good pitcher. He wouldn’t be as good in the AL, no pitcher is for the most part, but I don’t think he would be getting pounded at all. Sub 3.8 ERA.

I don't think he would get pounded

I just don’t think he would be in that top tier of pitchers in the league. He would be in that next tier, the borderline number 2 starters/good number 3 starters tier.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

What don't you understand

The part about facing a DH instead of a pitcher or the part about the AL being much better than the NL in every way

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Read this again and see how it isn't confusing.
I just don’t see him getting away with these walks when he is not only facing an extra hitter each game, but facing much better teams.

You explained it backwards. Volquez isn’t facing an extra hitter or facing much better teams.

But I now see what you were implying.

Ways to Lose to the Netherlands Despite Being a World Power in Baseball

1) The best you can do in two outfield spots is Willy Taveras and Jose Guillen.

2) You limit Jose Reyes to being a pinch runner.

3) Two of the three best players in the world drop out.

4) Try and steal third with one out in the bottom of the 9th.

5) Try and steal second with two outs in the bottom of the 9th. (Even if that was moot, the strategy is awful).

The DR is clearly insane and I’m actually happy to see them lose for being insane.

Or, if you're worried about people out of position, just put Reyes at first.

Or put him in center over Taveras. Or right over Guillen. They are bad.

Whatever the case, Reyes should fucking be in that lineup.

Do we know whether

Max Ramirez is expected to start tonight? Looking at their roster, he seems like the best DH option unless the Abreu/Ordonez defensive combo is so bad that a Parra or Blanco has to play an outfield spot. I think you’d much rather have Ramirez hitting than a Parra, though.

How much of Blalock's contract are you going to assume?

Abreu signed a 1 year deal for less than Blalock is going to get in 2009…I don’t think anyone would take him for free right now.

meh

Abreu is 35 and a declining player…

Blalock is 27, a better offensive player than Abreu when healthy, and that shouldn’t be a problem now that he’s not paying in the field everyday…

Plus he’s more versatile than Abreu if he does play in the field…

And…he’s probably a Type A, right?
