Dallas Hotels for Opening Day
I'm going to delete this after I've gotten what I need since I've already made this type of fanpost a month or so back.
Now I'm traveling by myself since the Girl is gone and I'm taking a HS buddy and he lives in DFW. Here's what I envision: show up Sat, Sun maybe sit by an outdoor pool then walk around to a restaurant and some bars, Mon game and then hit another good restaurant, Tues home to Wyoming.
I'm thinking I'd like to stay downtown since I presume you can wander around from place to place to find a cool bar to sitdown in. I've got it down to the Hyatt, Indigo, Lawrence, Adolphus, Marriott and Magnolia (most expensive option). The alternative is fly in Sun, leave Tues and stay at the Ritz Carleton since it's actually a reasonable rate for two nights and I'm thinking of treating myself (for a decent price).
Do people have any suggestions regarding my list of hotels or other hotels that will fit my plans?

The Ritz is cool if you don’t mind the price. The Joule downtown is where Pacman got into the drunken fight which led to his suspension this last fall; their pool is way way bad ass – it hangs out partway over Main Street with a glass bottom and the deck looks cool.
Wandering bar to bar is a bit more tricky. There are a couple of areas with many bars in a small space, but not really downtown. McKinney (near Boll Street) and West Village area both have many bars close together, but not sure if there are any hotels there.
Several bar options in Uptown
Hotel Za Za and the Crescent are within walking distance. You would also be right next to Rangers Dallas office if you needed to stop and grab a cap or shirt or something.

Here's how the travel cites categorize the various areas in Dallas
Expedia: Addison – Galleria; Downtown; Market Center; Oak Lawn – Uptown; Park Central.
Travelocity: Downtown; Galleria; Garland; park Central; S. Dallas.
Not sure how to find West Village. I’m just looking for somewhere that’s busy at night and I can walk around.
I think you would enjoy Uptown more than downtown.
Downtown Dallas isn’t as active as other major cities. Uptown is much cleaner and there are quite a few restaurants and bars you can walk to. It is kinda like douche bag central, so just be prepared for that. Honestly, it’s not really my type of place, but other people seem to like it. I’m sure it would be a different story if I were single…the scenery is usually pretty nice.

Dallas isn’t any more “douche bag central” than any other city, and less so than many others. See: the entire west coast and northeast for the gold standard of douchiness.
I meant for Dallas
Addison is a close second.

Looked at Za Za and it looks great
Also, from what I’ve seen in this post, there’s plenty nearby so this seems to be the location.
Anyone know anything about the Warwick Melrose hotel, W Dallas or the Hyatt Summerfield? Just wondering about their location/things to do.
Also looked at the Rosewood Mansion, Stoneleigh and Rosewood Crescent but they all look really stuffy.
x
Melrose is cool, I’m not aware of many bars withing walking distance, but it’s a good area close to a lot of good eats.
W Dallas is in Victory park where the AA Center (Stars & Mavericks) play. Higher priced eating and bars, but there are a few there despite the lack of tenants in Victory Park.
Stonleigh is right across from the Stonleigh P, a bar which I would like but for their bartenders are assholes to an extreme degree.
Crescent is close enough to the ZaZa where I’d probably rather stay at the ZaZa.
My Uncle is a part owner
of the Stoneleigh P.
I believe it was one of the first bars in Dallas to have liquor by the drink back in the 70s.
I also think Ann Richards and George Bush snorted coke there, once upon a time.
Get off my lawn.
Warwick Melrose is the decision
Place looks cool, is historic, and my trip is $500.00 cheaper (compared to Za Za) which buys a lot of taxi rides (plus there’s car service within 3 miles).
Yeah, I like the Melrose
Their lobby bar, the Library, isn’t bad, either.
Within 3 miles, I’m sure, are many of my favorite bars (I’ve linked to): Gingerman, Idle Rich and Blackfriar. I also love love love The Loon and The Old Monk. I recommend going to The Loon late – like midnight, because two of those drinks will knock you on your ass pretty easy.
The Loon
And you might see Dirk there.
by Anonymous New Guy on Mar 10, 2009 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
I’ve seen Dirk, Nash and Finley up there back in the day…haven’t seen Dirk up there in awhile. I’d usually run into him like on a Monday or something. Owen Wilson also loves The Loon; seen him up there a few times.
…..I go there a lot.
Thanks guys
If anyone sees someone sitting by themself in an old, sweatstained Rangers hat, give me a shout. I’ll buy you a drink. I’ll likely be wearing a University of Wyoming sweatshirt during the game (depending on the weather) and my seats are near the 3B dugout.
The only one I know about is the Stoneleigh
That’s where we put up our out-of-towners at my office. It’s an old building…I think at one point it was the tallest building in Dallas. I’ve heard mixed reviews from the folks that stay there.
There’s a bar right across the street, but not much else. You probably could walk to the bars in Uptown from there, but it would be a pretty good hike.
The W hotel might be cool. I’ve never been, but it’s in Victory Park. Victory Park is pretty cool.

Stay in downtown Fort Worth, there is much more to do there than in downtown Dallas. The Renaissance hotel is nice.

Stay in Dallas – just maybe don’t go out in Downtown Dallas. Go to Uptown or something for some drinks. Uptown and McKinney & Boll street are both within 2 miles from downtown.
I love it when you bring out the music/Dallas snob

Agreed.
No offense to people from Ft. Worth, but if given the choice, I’ll pick Dallas 99% of the time.
The 1% is there’s a really, really good show at Billy Bob’s.
My 2009 New Years Resolution: Quit feeding the trolls.
Sorry
Sundance Square in downtown Ft. Worth is way better than anything downtown Dallas has to offer hands down.
Keith Law on Greg Golson, "He's similiar to Cameron and Hunter in that all three are black."
Agree to disagree.
I’d rather spend time in Uptown or Lower Greenville or Deep Ellum (well, maybe notsomuch Deep Ellum) than Sundance Square, though I do like FtW on the whole.
My 2009 New Years Resolution: Quit feeding the trolls.
Lower Greenville is cool but the rest meh...
Downtown Ft. Worth is much cleaner than downtown Dallas and has free parking on the weekends and after 5pm during the week day. Not to mention the people are much nicer. The only good thing about downtown Dallas is the West End on OU/UT weekend. Oh and the book depository and Dely Plaza.
Keith Law on Greg Golson, "He's similiar to Cameron and Hunter in that all three are black."
Why are you making such an out of whack comparison?
What does downtown Dallas have to do with anything? You are cherrypicking the best Ft. Worth has to offer and comparing it to a relatively poor area of Dallas. (And even then, Sundance Square isn’t that much better than downtown Dallas).
We are talking about the downtown area are we not?
As stated above I really like the Lower Greenville area but for you to say downtown Dallas isn’t that far behind Sundance Square is just wrong. Sundance Square is far and away better than downtown Dallas. IMO
We could go on and on about Dallas v. Ft. Worth. It is all a matter of perspective of where you live and what you like.
Keith Law on Greg Golson, "He's similiar to Cameron and Hunter in that all three are black."
Stayed in FW last time I was in town for a Rangers game

I liked FW
But from where I was staying (don’t remember the name but I’m sure you all know) there wasn’t much around. I’m not going to have a car (I have no sense of direction and hate driving all over town) so maybe Dallas isn’t the place to be since I just want to walk out of my hotel and hit good bars at will and go to a very good restaurant with a quick taxi ride. I’ve done this in various large cities so I’m wondering how to do it in Dallas.
My comment wasn't directed at you, but rather certain Dallasites who seem to think they live in some cultural mecca and feel the need to bigtime FW, despite the fact that they've never lived outside of Texas

it is really your claim
that most people from ft. worth haven’t gone to Dallas?
I don’t really get the whole Ft. Worth v. Dallas thing. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the suburbs and haven’t really lived there in my adult life but it seems like a stupid choice. I do have adult friends that live there now and it just seems like they split their time between Sundance and various areas of Dallas. I don’t think anybody claims one area better than the other – nor has some nationalistic tie to one area.
To even talk about Ft. Worth people as separate from Dallas seems strange.
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
They are pretty far apart.
Your friends regularly split time between Ft. Worth in Dallas? Where do they live? I work downtown Dallas and driving to downtown Ft. Worth (courthouse) is a whip; it’s farther than you’d think. When I go out in Ft. Worth, I stay with friends there because it’s a loooong way home.

For the record
i grew up in Arlington, I live in Mansfield, and I work in Dallas. I spend a fair amount of time in both cities. The only major difference I see is the uptown area — Ft Worth doesn’t have something quite like that. The TCU area is somewhat similar (and maybe the new 7th street developments), but it’s not quite the same.
I just find it incredibly humorous when people who live and work in Dallas act like it’s a whole ‘nother world than FtW. It’s not just F.P. — I have friends who do it too (and they grew up in Arlington like me and know that it’s not that different). It really just cracks me up.

Jackson Hole isn’t even a real part of Wyoming. Just a bunch of multimillionaire people that moved there from out of state. It’s beautiful, has great restaurants, is very very expensive and has some insufferable people (not all – just some).
The only minor league team is in Casper (Rockies rookie ball). For me I can just drive to Denver in an hour and change and take in a game.
serious questio (no snark)
how far are the bars from there?
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
Not far -
If you look at Google Maps, find Hotel Lumen, then there are some good bars at McKinney and Fairmount (Near Lemmon Ave.), there are several at Lemmon and Cole St., lower Greenville is at ~ Greenville and Ross (East side of 75).
Personally, one of my favorite bars in Dallas is walking distance from the Lumen, it’s a back corner of a barbecue joint in Snyder Plaza called Peggy Sue’s – mostly because it’s ultra cheap and I’m friends with the bartender. Not because it’s that cool, because it’s sort of a dump and average age of bar patron is over 50, easy.
ok
technically it’s not far, but it’s a solid mile. I don’t think Dallas people realize that in other big cities, walking distance is real walking distance. And if things aren’t walking distance, you can take a bus or a train.

And I never really go here, but it’s nearby and seems popular: Uptown Bar & Grill
