Just got an email from Dewan’s publicists with an excerpt from the book. Interestingly, he tries to answer the question at the top of my interview prep sheet: How much of an impact will Young have at third base. According to Dewan, he’ll be worth about four wins.

Spectacular.
If that actually ends up being true, I’ll almost get over his douche act and the poor-man’s Jeter treatment.

Incredibly spectacular.
He would almost be worth his contract at 4 wins. Hell, no almost about it.

It's Dewan

there are a lot of if's there
like Young playing average 3B – but still very encouraging.
Realistically, what are people’s expectations of Young? I won’t be terribly disappointed with -10 runs for the season.

That seems fair
I have hope that he’ll have a good offensive year, but nothing much to base that on.
by Brett Perryman on Mar 9, 2009 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think a -5 to -10 would be fine...
…if he showed improvement throughout the year. I’d like to see signs of him being a plus defender next year, especially since he is very likely to be a below average hitter by then.
by GhettoBear04 on Mar 9, 2009 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Defensively?
If he’s -10 runs on the season, we’ve got a huge, huge problem.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 9, 2009 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
you don't think that is a reasonable expectation?
i don’t see why we have a huge problem. That means we only gain 3 runs instead of 4 defensively.

No
I don’t think that him being 10 runs defensively at third base - in other words, him being well below average there — is a reasonable expectation.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 9, 2009 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
A little harsh
I think Young’s low-end for 3B would be -10 runs, but also that his good-side (arm, dependable hands) should translate well.
I think average defensively should be expected, which is a huge jump up from our below-replacement level defense there last year.
by Trickman on Mar 9, 2009 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My expectations are about league-average.
A two WARish player. By some combination of average to slightly above average offense and maybe 5 or 10 runs below average defensively.
by philkid3 on Mar 9, 2009 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Young won't hurt the team defensively
Which is all I would want to see from him at 3B this year. He’s got the tools to be above average, but in his first year at 3B, I would expect for him to make some rookie mistakes.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

MY and 3rd base
haven’t most here at LSB been clamoring for MY to be moved to 3rd due to his lack of mobility at SS? Looks like you should be glad since you got what you wanted. Unless MY goes down with some unforeseen injury, ain’t nobody else gonna play 3rd for this team ’less Warsh decides MY needs a day off. The hate for MY is mighty apparent in some quarters here on LSB.

But I don’t think it was Elaine’s line originally. It was the wheelchair girl that called Kramer a hipster doofus.
Did Elaine also say it and was she first?

Ah, I thought it somehow meant 4 wins from neutral
not 4 wins defensively with a -26 runs baseline.
How many does he immediately give back in probably lesser offense than we got from 3b last year.
the preceding post was a great success.

do you remember how much offense we got last year from 3b?
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
by ab03 on Mar 9, 2009 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
809 to be exact
Which is a little lower than I thought probably because Duran dragged it down in his at bats, but whats the over/under on young?
Granted its probably not too many runs worth.
the preceding post was a great success.
by DSheppard on Mar 9, 2009 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Probably accurate
Oye. That’s probably not league average.
by WyoRanger on Mar 9, 2009 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope
That is not up to league average. I can’t find an exact average OPS for 3B, but this chart from THT would put a .750 – .760 OPS at the bottom for those who qualify (not sure how many PA’s a player needs).
by Excel Hearts Choi on Mar 9, 2009 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
In 2008
ML average for 3B was 778.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 9, 2009 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And isn't offense still on the decline?
I think a .778 OPS or somewhere in that neighborhood is reasonable to expect from Young if he isn’t playing hurt.

I would lower the SLG a bit
and raise the BA and OBP. I doubt Young’s power would go higher than it was a couple of years ago since he is on the decline, but I think he’ll still be able to be a great contact hitter and mix in some walks there.

It’s not out of the question that with a healthy ten digits he could hit a bunch of doubles again and keep that slugging pct. up there.

Although I've generally been on the optimistic side about MY
I believe he’ll be leage average or better defensively (the translation of hands and decent arm without regard to range) and will approach career average offensively. Not sure how that calculates for WAR, but should be OK and an improvement from the past couple of years.

Yup
I agree with all of this. I truly believe he can handle the position and will provide better offense than we had from 3B last year. He’s not the masher you’d like at third but I think he could be above average defensively. If not he’ll be at least league average. I just like the confirmation from Dewan which to me means league average offense and defense which is better than last year.
by WyoRanger on Mar 9, 2009 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
At third, that would be about average.
Which is about 2 WAR. Probably a little better for him if he gets typical playing time.
by philkid3 on Mar 9, 2009 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm sorry, you said career average.
For him that’s actually a little bit better, closer to 3 WAR.
by philkid3 on Mar 9, 2009 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If he can be 2-3 WAR for the rest of his contract
It will be at least tolerable
by Telegraph on Mar 9, 2009 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only knock on MY's play at SS was his range, right?
I mean we can all agree on that. MY arm is strong, he has good hands and he moves quick to his left (IIRC, MY’s strength is moving left). All of this points to a player well equipped for playing the position. I see no reason not to believe he will be above avg. defensively. Range has little value at 3B.
