Wednesday a.m. stuff
Ugly start yesterday for Matt Harrison, but he says he isn't worried, it was just one of those days.
Jim Reeves says that Jon Daniels has a chore ahead of him in figuring out how to make room on the 40 man for the additions, and that he can't have another Galarraga situation occur. Reeves also says he's not a big Andruw Jones believer, although Rudy Jaramillo apparently is.
Jeff Wilson says that decision on the 25 man roster, and the moves necessary to free up space on the 40 man roster, could go down to the last minute. He says the Reds have some interest in Joaquin Arias, who has no real future with the Rangers, so if Texas could move Arias for a prospect not yet on the 40 man roster, that might be an ideal scenario.
Richard Durrett takes a look at the Rangers' corner infielders.
T.R. Sullivan says David Murphy is going to sit against some lefty pitchers.

didn't I read that Holland was making the start against the Angels today?
Big showcase for him, if so.

It would be a good
measuring point for him. The Angels are likely to have most of thier regulars play today since it is a home game for them.

if we don't see both of them
Something will have gone horribly wrong.
As soon as Holland strings together four high quality starts, I’d bet he will be pitching in the Rangers rotation. With some luck, that could be as soon as late May. Feliz will probably be a little later, maybe around mid summer is my guess.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
by tricer on Apr 1, 2009 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Or terribly right
If the Rangers are in contention, or close to it, then you don’t bring up Feliz. No need to rush him, and if the team is doing well, you’d rather not deal with any growing pains.
Remember, neither Holland or Feliz are on the 40. Bringing them in amounts to giving up on someone else in the process.
by JBImaknee on Apr 1, 2009 9:31 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
if the Rangers are in contention
I think that means that they will be scrambling to add some quality to the bullpen (seems like all contending teams are doing that during the summer), and I think it will be extremely tough to keep a guy with such a dominant pitch in the minor leagues rather than adding that weapon to the bullpen mix.
Doctor please. Some more of these.

exactly
Feliz is exactly the sort of pitcher who should start his major league career in the bullpen. if everything has gone their way and the Rangers are in contention when August 1st rolls around, there is a decent chance we could upgrade our pitching staff significantly with Feliz, Holland and Sheets, all without making a trade.

Feliz may have
more to learn than people realize. I wouldn’t have any problem with him not pitching for the Rangers this year. However, how he does in OKC will determine when he arrives in Arlindgton.

But saying that how Feliz does in OKC will determine when he arrives in Arlington reminds me of the analysis I heard a fellow student give in response to a question yesterday in property:

A: Location.
Q: Right! So what do we want to know about the location in this case?
A: Umm……where it is?

you saw him bouncing throws in sept right?
He “injured” his arm in winter ball of 06, had surgery that revealed no damage in the spring of 07, and will never be the same as before if he can’t recover from the three stitches he got from getting scoped. I have to think that the reason he has not recovered is because he was never really committed to his strengthening/rehab/throwing/mechanics/SSRI program from the time of his injury until now. Anyone else got a good explanation? There have always been whispers about his makeup since he got to AAA in 06 so maybe the gossip was dead on for once? I’m sick of this guy slappin’ singles, making two-hop throws and takin up a 40 spot. Trade him for a DSL guy while we still can!!!

Ha ha.
Do you remember that dope miniseries, Shaka Zulu?
All my HS friends were fascinated by that series. What an amazing historical badass.
Well, we made a home movie about it. We used to do Bruce lee movies and things like that all the time, loved the Fu and such, but we got tired of that and wanted to do Shaka Zulu, but our only 2 friends who were brothers thought it was stupid and corny, so I got tagged to play Shaka Zulu. Except, my nickname in HS was Ragu, but most peeps just shortened it to Goo. So the movie was called Shaka Gulu.
The reason that ties in to the U.G. is this: I’m about 6’3, 230 or so now (and it aint all muscle). Not at all these days. Late 30’s are a cruel bitch, and I’’l freely admit I’ve let myself go some. But I digress. Back then I was normal weight, so still on the large side, and my best friend is 5’4 and 135 lbs. He was the main co-star. So picture a less svelte Shaka Gulu, body slamming a little 5’4 turd, with the Hi-ya, Hi-ya singsong of Shaka Zulu’s being chorused in acapella style in the back ground. Shades of the U.G.’s paler cousin.
We thought it was funny…

Watched the Padres Brewers game last night on MLB Network. Man, hard game to watch. Teams have identical uniforms now – and they suck.
I started about half way through the game – hadn’t heard of many of either team’s players at all.

cross out any relievers, we sure can't spare any
I don’t think they’re after our infield unless they share the Red’s love for Arias; their starters are pretty solid, unless they have an injury we don’t know about; their outfield’s pretty set in stone; MAYBE a backup outfielder? Murphy, Byrd?
my best guess is a catcher – Kendall’s done right? but then I see they have “Pocket Pudge” – a 5’7" prospect – that looks pretty good at the plate, at least from his minor league numbers.
So I have NO idea

Yes, he was a stud in the draft but I also wanted him because he’s from NJ.
I would’ve loved Porcello as the first pick and pick up Main with the second 1st.
Of course a lot of different things come to play if we drafted Porcello. Would we have been able to sign everyone else in the draft?

Money, Age, MLB contract
They’re all very good arguments.
1. Money was a lot for a HS pitcher
2. Being out of HS, there should be a long time before seeing him in the majors. Failure rate is a lot higher.
3. No reason a HS pitcher should get a ML contract when he should be at least 2 or 3 years away from making the majors.
So yes, I REALLY wanted us to draft him. I can see why we didn’t.

TR has his roster preferences posted.
TT to OKC with Melhuse as backup C. Boggs as 5th OF. No Jones. Free Cat.
While TT needs some time in AAA to work on his hitting, he is the perfect backup for the Rangers at this time. Salty has made improvement with his D but I would rather have TT be a defensive replacement late in a close game. Boggs needs to spend some time in OKC so he can get regular ABs. If Cruz or Byrd gets traded he can be a good 4th OF. I agree with TR on Jones. Question: Do you think Cat would rather sit at home and collect the $6M owed to him or would he rather sit at the end of the Rangers bench and get sporadic playing time?

Ideally
you want to field the best lineup as possible if you’re Washington…if we don’t deem Jones as worthy of a spot, and we clear Cat out, I wouldn’t mind Boggs at all as our 5th OF. I would like to see him get more PT and development, but I just think I’d rather have Boggs’ defense and upside vs. anything else. However, if we keep Cat, I’d be fine keeping Boggs in AAA for a little while. I think he gets onto the roster by June though.
Teagarden and Salty should not be split up. give them a 60/40 split, maybe 70/30 if Salty’s defense and receiving are improved…

you're not a cop
and as much as you think you know what a cops is supposed to do in certain situations, you don’t – and you should probably take your cues from what other cops say on the situation.
so when every cop says, “he could have handled the situation better,” as opposed to “it is SOP to treat that situation with caution,” then you should realize you don’t know what the fuck you are talking about.
do you realize how most conversations with you end with “you should realize you don’t know what the fuck you are talking about?”

But putting a guy on guard like that is definitely not a good way to get on his good side. Pulling out your Johnson and telling a guy that you could ruin his night for a Class C misdemeanor after all that? Nah, that’s a bunch of bullshit, and he deserves what he’s gotten for that.

Number 1, number 1, echo
The correct term is, “Hear, hear!” It is an abbreviation for “Hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!”

it's still going to
cost them money, as I’m sure they’ll complete an investigation and then have some retraining for existing officers. But, if he had been fired, he would have sued and probably would have won and cost the City of Dallas in legal resources and compensation.

ouch
The Rangers’ off-season decision to move Gold Glove incumbent Michael Young from shortstop to third base had merit. Hardware aside, Young has never had good defensive statistics, though his performance improved a bit last season

and yes, everyone will be able to see it on mlb network or mlb.tv, its not broadcast locally.

Well my guide is saying 5pm Eastern... so I hope it doesn't come on at 2pm Central, cause that means either my DVR box is f'ed up (which would blow) or we've stepped into some time altering vortex and the universe is gonna implode any moment now.

Or.... they're doing it on tape delay, which now that I peruse their web site seems a little more likely than the time vortex thingy.

Benson told he made staff offically
RHP Scott Feldman has been told he’s moving to the bullpen to start the season. … RHP Kris Benson has been told he is mkaking the club and will open in the starting rotation. … RHP Jason Jennings will also make the team and will pitch out of the bullpen. … LHP Eddie Guardado will make the team as a reliever. … RHPs Dustin Nippert and Dustin Eyre have been told they will probably start the year on the DL with Nippert going to Double-A Frisco to begin a rehab assignment and Eyre going to Oklahoma City. … Also RHP Neftali Feliz has been re-assigned to minor league camp.

what would you guys think?
about picking up dallas mcpherson and trying to slide him through waivers to AAA?

One would have to think he'd either want a) a Major League job or b) a team with an unsettled 1b/3b/dh situation where he might possibly be in line for some AB's.
I don’t think we fit either bill.
I’d be real surprised if the Yanks don’t take a look at him, though.
