The pitching staff
We apparently have a pitching staff. T.R. Sullivan, Evan Grant, and Jeff Wilson all have the lowdown...
Basically, the bullpen will be Frankie Francisco, C.J. Wilson, Eddie Guardado, Scott Feldman, Jason Jennings, Josh Rupe, and Warner Madrigal.
Kris Benson is in the rotation. Willie Eyre and Dustin Nippert are headed to the d.l. Derrick Turnbow is headed to AAA.
The Rangers, by outrighted Kason Gabbard, have one vacant spot on the 40 man roster right now, and will create three more when Eric Hurley and Joaquin Benoit are moved to the 60 day d.l. and when Joe Koshansky is waived.
The final spot on the bench is still down to Andruw Jones and Frank Catalanotto, but if Cat goes, Jones gets his roster spot.
There's still one 40 man decision to go, which could be trading Joaquin Arias, waiving Travis Metcalf or Luis Mendoza, or putting Nippert, Eyre or Tommy Hunter on the 60 day d.l.

Trades
Is there anymore smoke out there regarding a trade for Hammel or Niemman from the Rays? I don’t think Arias has a spot here but I do think he will be one of those guys that does well and people hang on JD, especially if Andrus struggles. If I were JD I would be tempted to stash him in AAA for another year unless I am overwhelmed.

I don't think Metcalf gets
waived (traded, sure why not), otherwise why bother optioning him in the first place? I think Hunter pitches today. Nippert pitched BP sunday and Tuesday. If I’m Eyre, I make a call to my union rep if I get put on the 60day DL with a groin pull. Arias could be traded (I hope) but I doubt it after the Reds watch him play 3B today. So that leaves Bannister and Mendoza I’ll take the one with more options, Bannister, even though I’m not sold on him either.
However, what I really hope, is that I wake up tomorrow and discover that today’s bullpen (which looks disturbingly similar to last year’s pen BTW) has disappeared into a crop circle of some sort and replaced by one that I’m not embarrassed to call Major League.

no, he was optioned to AAA yesterday
why bother to do that unless you want to keep him? If they didnt want him on the 40 that would have requested waivers on him already.

by Goyogringo on Apr 1, 2009 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're not missing anything.
Optioning a player doesn’t take him off the 40 — and doesn’t prevent the team from later DFA’ing him.
Metcalf is still on the 40, but has been optioned to AAA.

odd man out
Madrigal is probably the odd man out in a couple of weeks when Nippert comes back. I am sure Jennings will get a long leash since he is a veteran and the 6/7 starter. Maybe the Rangers can get 2-3 months from Bensen & Jennings in the rotation. I wouldn’t mind seeing Holland take thier SP spot sometime in June.

At least with him up when Nippert comes off the DL we can simply option him down instead of waiving someone. The only other guys with options in the bullpen are CJ and Frankie. I don’t think we are going to be optioning either of them for Dusty Tits.

30 mlb teams
name six worse than texas this year.
if you only get five, then texas is in bottom 20%.
texas IS one of the worst teams in baseball.

while the rotation is an offense
our offense is hardly one.

Ahh imagine how simple it would be
If we just sent Elvis down to OKC for a few weeks to save a year of team control, rolled with Vizquel and Arias for a few weeks, then we wouldn’t have any 40 man problems right now.
Once Elvis is ready to come up then you make a decision and with so many veterans who were NRIs it will probably be easy to let one go if they are sucking up the place.

No shit...
I just don’t get this. One of the more bonehead things JD has done. 3 weeks in OKC = 1 year later on and not worrying about another spot on the 40 right away.
By that time Benson will have sucked for 3 or 4 starts and can be released. Jennings can take his spot in the rotation and Eyre or Nippert could be put in the ‘pen. I don’t like the idea of Jennings in the ‘pen. I perfer he be in the rotation in Frisco ’til the Rangers need him. I also don’t like the idea of Benson in the rotation. I’d be very surprised if he is still on the team come June 1st.

Yeah, plan for someone to fail.
Thats a solid business plan.

Ok...
So you think Benson will be fine in the rotation?

Follow up...
and yes the Rangers should be planning on at least one of their pitchers to fail. Chances are that at least one of Benson, Jennings, Madrigal, Rupe, Guardado, Feldman, or Harrison will struggle. Are you naive enough to think that they all will pitch well and the Rangers will go the first 2 months of the season with the same 12 pitchers?

Contingencies are much different than planning for someone to fail.
I suppose it’s all semantics, anyway.

You're arguing this wrong
Obviously the team thinks Andrus is ready. If you think he’s ready to substantively contribute to a winning team, then you play him and worry about that lost year when/if it’s an issue.
The real argument is over the readiness of Andrus.

exactly
It’s not the soundness of the decision that has me scratching my head, it’s the evaluation of the player that appears questionable to me.
Doctor please. Some more of these.

I hope neither of yall ever run a business
Cause giving away a full year of team control for a few weeks in April of a year where you aren’t focusing on contending is stupid. The season is 6 months long. Is there that big a difference in Andrus playing 100% of the season in the majors as opposed to 85% of the season in the majors.

player relations
He was named the starting SS before ST. How do you think it would set with Andrus (and other players) if he were sent down for a few weeks when he has done nothing to lose his job?

What about the opportunity cost?
Thinks perhaps they weighed the value of having Elvis with the team from day one against that 7th year? A LOT can change by then: he might not pan out, he might be locked up long-term anyway, he might be weighed down by WS rings and not want to leave.
We (collectively speaking, of course) sure spend a lot of time bashing decisions made by professionals based solely on our small slice of data.

It probably wouldn't happen
if those professionals had a track record of winning. Once you establish a bad track record, like the Rangers Franchise, you get a lot of second guessing.

When you see other teams do it with much better prospects then it puts the Rangers decision in question
Seeing Weiters and Longoria and possibly Price sent down knowing full well they are just as, if not more, ready for the majors than Andrus is makes you wonder why we are doing what we are doing.
