Andruw apparently making the team
The Rangers final roster is ready to be set. The final move is to decide what to do with Frank Catalanotto because the Rangers want to go with Andruw Jones as their fifth outfielder.
The Rangers have been trying to trade Catalanotto but have unable to get any bites. They were close to a deal with the Marlins but that fell through when Florida acquired Russ Gload. If they can't trade him, the Rangers will likely release him.
The Rangers, strongly prodded by hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, want Jones on the team as a fifth outfielder and possible right-handed designated hitter.

I never cared about getting the 40+ hr Andruw, but I thought there might still be flashes of the elite CF defender – and that alone would make him worth a roster spot. But the reports I’ve read suggest that his defensive ability may be farther gone than his hitting.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
I don't think this ends as badly as everyone else does
I don’t care if blalock, murphy and byrd lose at bats vs lefties and I ultimately trust the front office to ensure Davis and Cruz don’t lose time to him.
the preceding post was a great success.
that's the one i'm scared of
even cat as the 25th man would hit 2nd.

I hope so...
we know Wash would let Cat just sit at the end of the bench, he did it last year.
I also don’t care about Blalock or Murphy losing AB’s to Jones. However if Cruz and Davis are losing AB’s to Jones on a weekly basis I may hop aboard the fire Wash train. It doesn’t matter if Cat or Jones was the last guy on the roster. It’s all about how that last guy is used. The last guy on the roster doesn’t start 3 games a week and hit cleanup. That’s my fear.

I don’t much want Andruw on the team, but didn’t much want Cat around either. My gut tells me that Jones is more likely to regain his past form (since his decline seemed somewhat abnormal, maybe he can be fixed). Cat’s decline seems pretty inevitable.
Sorry JB,
but the decline might have been pharmaceutically induced.

So was Jason Giambi's
the year he went .208/ .342/ .379 and folks thought he was done.
"The idea that the Rangers are going to be a solid contender for a number of years is a fantasy." - Adam J. Morris
So?
Giambi always had great plate discipline. Steroids don’t change that one way or another. And while people thought he was done, that was 1 injury filled year after many dominating seasons. The 5 years before that terrible season were spent putting up an OPS+ that couldn’t come close to in his best years. Now take a look at Jones. You have a power driven OPS with some good plate discipline, but nothing spectacular. You have his best year by far in 2005, a noticeable decline in 2006, and then he drops off in 2007 with a nose dive in 2008. He is nothing like Giambi

Random different subject....Was I drunk on Kool Aid or did Holland look like he could step right into the rotation today?

It's important to remember he was basically facing the Angels AAA club

His move to first was something I haven’t seen on the Rangers in a long time….He just looks really polished for such a young guy.

If he turns out like
Kenny did that wouldn’t be bad. I think he has way more potential than Kenny had at that age though.

Kenny threw fairly hard when he first came up, didn't he?

Yeah...I found a VHS of a game Nolan Ryan started and Kenny came in, in relief he was throwing pretty hard then.
When I see a solar eclipse I think "oh no, is the moon eating the sun?"
Perhaps a bit of koolaid was at work
But he doesn’t seem very far from being ready. With him, all I see is fine-tuning and a bit more experience at fighting through trouble. I think Feliz is a Sept callup at best, but Holland looks to be on the cusp.
Interestingly enough
RonWash said pretty much the same thing about Holland. Said he thought he was a one trick pony, just blowing away guys in the minors. But, after watching him pitch several times, he saw that Holland was not scared to go to his second, or even third best pitch to get hitters out. Wash said that is a huge difference, being able to trust your lesser pitches when your best one is getting smacked around.
Nice to hear, and concurs with your feelings, it seems.

Andruw Jones is a waste of salary, a roster spot, a place on the bench, a seat on the bus, a locker, a jersey, a number and time.

i don't like this
is a guy like andruw jones going to be a good PH’er? Is that what he really envisions doing? Either he’s just going to take up space at the end of the bench or he’s going to get slightly hot and either overplayed or whiny about playing time.
Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder
why though?
I was thinking well before Andruw was even a thought for this club that we should find a way to get rid of Cat…it would’ve been nice to have traded him for SOMETHING, but he’s gone now…and now, if Andruw succeeds, we succeed as a team most likely – at least in a major way offensively. if he sucks, no harm done – we simply trade him and roll with Boggs/Borbon/Golson and/or Max-Ram

Will Andruw get more than 248 ABs?
One guess who got that many last year.
This isn’t a big deal.
But Jones will fill in better in the event Blalock or Byrd goes down (or gets traded).
