Yeah, that could have gone better.

Actually, it could have gone a lot worse...it is a minor miracle Harrison only allowed 4 runs, and the Rangers were fortunate to have gotten 3 runs across.

I'd like to see if there is some way the Rangers could avoid playing in Detroit for the next 5 years or so.

For as bad as everything went

4-3 looks pretty good. That should have been an 8-1 game.

by JBImaknee on Apr 11, 2009 2:51 PM CDT reply actions

But I was mildly encouraged by Harrison

He held his own when he obviously didn’t have great stuff. From what it sounded like, when he was missing on pitches, it wasn’t by much. Detroit wasn’t hitting him hard, lots of seeing eye hits.

by JBImaknee on Apr 11, 2009 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

That's his m.o.

He misses on a bunch of pitches by just a little bit, and doesn’t have great stuff, so he ends up with a low number of Ks and an average to high number of walks. It is a problem.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 11, 2009 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

He’s never going to be a key part of a rotation. But hopefully he can be a 5th starter type of guy who can put up an ERA around 5.00 and keep you in most games he pitches.

Well

I fully expect detroit to burn to the ground within 5 years, so you might get your wish.

As good as the offense looked thru 3 games,

they have looked completely inept in the last two. I hate day games. Josh does too.

I thought it be all warm and shitty, but it just tasted like normal beer. It was still cold.

Adam Everett matched our hit total?!?!?!?!

Please stop swinging for the fences. Work the count. Yada yada yada.

Tip of the hat to Verlander, but that was only 5 innings.

we need another gem from Millwood tomorrow

we’ll see if he can stop this losing streak. Our pitching is awful.

if you only amass a whopping two base hits.

this is true, but it doesn't lessen the need for a gem

If the Reds and the Tigers swapped leagues.

Old Comiskey Park

There was a time back in the 70’s, when the White Sox were wearing those black pajama uniforms, when the Rangers couldn’t win at Old Comiskey Park. I’d get so mad as a kid when they would sing that “nananana, good bye” song.

…the Yankees couldn’t win at Arlington Stadium. Teams goes through periods were, for whatever reason, they can’t win on the road at a certain location.

stupid gerald laird

Yeah… pretty disheartening.
But still, win tomorrow.. 4-2, probably tied for first.. heading home for a week…

More concerning right now is CD. Not long term, but we need him right now to anchor the end of the lineup.. and hes not doing that. Murph looks horrible too though byrd will probably be in for him a lot right now.

the preceding post was a great success.

Yeah I'm more concerned

with CD he needs to get out of this slump fast. Hopefully during the next home stand.

by iorange555 on Apr 11, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Even if his slump goes ten games

He’ll get it going at some point. He looks just enough “off” to be futile right now, and when he begins to hit you won’t see much difference in how he looks or his approach. That said, don’t expect big numbers, just occasional big power.

I'd be more concerned

about his slump not going as long because Washington chooses to use his other options available. The bench is fairly strong, and if you slump long enough, you will have to work it out in BP, because you won’t be playing.

Well...

I was pretty much hoping to go 1-2 in Detroit which would leave them at 4-2 to start the season, so if they win tomorrow then that is still a very good start. There are certainly some troubling indicators but I don’t think anyone believes Harrison will not have any good starts or that Davis will hit below the Mendoza line. I still feel pretty good overall.

sad, but true.

May I also say that this is the worst run of umpiring I have ever seen – it’s like THEY want us to use pitch tracker.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 11, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

It's strange...

…but I’m not all that discouraged by this loss. The offense is going to be there; CD’s going to come around, Murph’s going to come around, things like that.

The defense…well, there were some strange plays in the first two games of this series. That’s no excuse, but I’m still confident that this defense is going to be significantly improved.

Harrison was pretty good at getting out of jams. Problem is, he put himself in those jams in the first place.

3-2. Win tomorrow, you’re 4-2 after the first two series, which I’ll take.

Seeking a new signature...

by ghtd36 on Apr 11, 2009 3:19 PM CDT reply actions

typical Harrison start

nibbles a little too much which leads to walks. He did a good job of getting out of his jams. Needs more Ks. Nice play by Elvis in the hole. He certainly would have gotten most catchers at 1B. The defense overall was better. Great throw by Salty to get the runner (Grangderson?) stealing. I expect Blalock at 1B tomorrow with Jones Dhing.

Honestly, in the grand scheme of things, if you told me a Harrison vs. Verlander game in Detroit would be a 4-3 loss. . .

. . . I’d be cool with that.

Of course, there’s more to analyzing how a team played than just the final score, and that’s not much happy.

An interesting situation to watch

Minnesota will get Scott Baker back Wednesday, they’ll have to drop someone from their 25 – all of their bullpen guys are out of options.

Phil Humber
Craig Breslow

and a few others might be dropped to make room.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 11, 2009 5:01 PM CDT reply actions

I'd love to get our hands on Breslow

He’d be an instant upgrade for our mid-relief staff. Humber doesn’t really excite me as much but he’d be worth a look.

I just made a quick

somewhat sarcastic off the cuff comment. Humber doesn’t excite me much at all. He might be slightly better than Josh Rupe. I do like Breslow’s K/9.

i was just listening to 105.3 the Fan

and the most incredibly stupid thing was be advocated by one of the radio personalities to call up Smoak because Davis can’t cut it. People, it’s 5 games. Davis is still part of the future of this organization. It is problematic having 9 K’s in 18 ABs with only 1 hit. I think he’ll come around, but you have to give him time.

Funny think

Smoak is hitting about .250 in AA right now.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 11, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

it was the guy on with Richard Durrett

I just caught part of the discussion and didnt hear the guy’s name. He was pretty adamant about having Smoak up here right now and used the “Teixeira comp” as part of his argument. He was pretty down on Davis and didnt seem to care about what he did in the 80+ games last year.

Why even bring a button down or extra pants?

You’d get laid more if chicks knew you played ball, so just wear the uniform to the club. Maybe change shoes. Spikes cant be good for a packed dance floor but could come in handy if you get served. Either way.

Why is it I'm getting vibes...

that Benson is getting more leeway than Harrison? Sure, Harrison probably should have thrown more strikes (however, one of the walks was semi-intentional because first base was open with two outs), but Benson was throwing batting practice.
