The pitch to Inge wasn’t that bad, he knocked the bat out of Everett’s hands on that little dink single, and then the grounder that Andrus little leagued into left field.

Not saying he was great, cause he wasn’t at all, but I don’t think you can look at this outing and proclaim that he sucks.

I think Frankie might be that good.

That’s about it. The problem is, there should be better pitchers than this available. That’s the definition of “below replacement;” that minimum-wage players who can do better are out there.

by philkid3 on Apr 12, 2009 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the bullpen

is full of guys that are fine on their good days, but when they don’t have it, they are just gonna lob BP. If a bullpen pitcher struggles on the Rangers, you might as well yank em and try someone else.

honestly, the save statistic is one of my least favorite things about baseball.

FF should have been in there at some point because he’s the team’s best relief pitcher and that was the game’s highest leverage situation.

Keeping him in the bullpen because it’s not the top of the 9th and the team isn’t up by 1, 2, or 3 runs is asinine. It’s 100% accepted throughout baseball, but still asinine.

Its the 9th inning. Of a tight game

you bring your best chance to win in that single at bat.

Davis is sucking right now. He’s in a funk. The team just blew a lead. Get someone fresh out there. Its perfectly rationale. I don’t want him benched to start games, but seriously – in that situation, he shouldn’t have been in there.

by JBImaknee on Apr 12, 2009 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

ridiculous

like pulling a closer if he walks the leadoff man. if you don’t have faith in your guy in that situation, you might as well bench him. that’s not an option. you never sub a righty for a lefty against a righty. that’s just basic shit

Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder

by ab03 on Apr 12, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Seems to me

you want your best hitters in there in the 9th inning when you are down yet close. That is more important than lefty/righty. Murphy and Davis are just not good right now. Byrd definitely is better than either them; who cares that you lose the lefty/righty matchup.

I think r/l splits

are a great way to manage at the onset of the game.

But Rodney is an overpowering pitcher who shut down the Rangers lineup yesterday. I think Murphy, Davis, and Salty. Why send them in again this time when they were completely overmatched yesterday?

by JBImaknee on Apr 12, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

first of all, it's ridiculous of you to think that your philosophy is the norm

it’s not; doing what you did opens you up to criticism and would be deemed “playing the hunch.”

but, it was 1AB. if they looked overmatched then, they might have been able to overpower rodney the next day. 1AB is not an indicator of anything. splits are the best indicator in this situation and they tell you (very clearly) do not hit a righty against a righty. i can’t believe you think this is open to discussion

Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder

by ab03 on Apr 12, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't say my philosophy is the norm

I don’t even know where I was talking about my philosophy.

I’m not saying to play a hunch.

I just don’t think that R/L splits are the only motivating factor in making decisions of who to send up to bat. In the 9th inning, the only issue you care about is scoring runs at this moment – you can sort out defense, future innings, etc later.

If against a righty, you’d rather have Murphy and Davis up there than Byrd and Jones, just because of their handedness, that’s fine. Really the question is whether the difference in splits is greater than the difference in ability. (you’d rather have Kinsler up than Murphy, right?) From the last week, Byrd has been hitting the ball well, Murphy and Davis haven’t been hitting it at all. I think that supersedes whatever split difference there is. Obviously you don’t, and obviously Washington doesn’t either.

by JBImaknee on Apr 12, 2009 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

the last week?

3 games a piece? really? yeah, i’d rather base my decision on a substantial statistical set

Ceterum censeo Cat esse delendam - Cahill the Elder

by ab03 on Apr 12, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Lets ignore Davis

because we all probably agree that Davis is a far better hitter than Byrd, outside of this slump.

Byrd is a better hitter than Murphy though. Just in general. Against lefties, Byrd is far, far better. Against righties, Byrd’s 2008 OPS was about the same as Murphy’s (actually, a bit better).

So they’re roughly equivalent in that situation, handedness taken into account. So I use two other pieces of info. Murphy has looked bad this year so far, lost at the plate, Byrd has looked pretty good. And Murphy was overmatched by Rodney yesterday. Both of those points would make me pinch hit there.

Cj...

should shut the fuck up about being the closer. He should be worried about being waived and sacking groceries.

This is ridiculous

"Take me out to the ball game, Take me out with the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks, I don't care if I never get back, Let me root, root, root for the RANGERS, If they don't win it's a shame. For it's one, two, three strikes, your out, At the old ball game."

by NothinG on Apr 12, 2009 2:34 PM CDT reply actions

I blame this on Elvis....

He should have let that ball bounce and turned a double play. It would have been two outs and nobody on. CJ did his job there, and once again, the defense let the pitcher down……sigh.

The 2009 Texas Rangers..........they're awesome, man.

Andrus'

error didn’t help, but CJ melted down completely like he does every time he gets in a jam. If one error causes you to melt down that much, you should be in the minors.

Even still...

There’s got to be some sort of damage control…

I mean this is insane

Everyone knew the bullpen was going to be spotty. EVERYONE.

Why not pick up a free agent, especially when they were so inexpensive this off season?

but but Tom Hicks is NOT CHEAP!!

Josh Hamilton puts his pants on one leg at a time just like you but once he gets his pants on he hits baseballs 420 feet.

not it shoudln't

the bottom of the 8th in a tie game with the winning run on 3rd?

how the hell do you figure that?

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Apr 12, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Millwood should have never been pulled

I have said it before and I will say it again, Ron Washington needs to be fired and CJ needs to be dumped, and not just because of this game, the dude can’t manage his way out of a paper bag, and as someone else here said, CJ was a flask in the pan

by TRFAN on Apr 12, 2009 2:35 PM CDT reply actions

millwood shouldn't have been pulled why?

because he couldn’t trust the bullpen with the lead? that is ridiculous. you have to give the ball to your setup guy in that situation. turn these games into 7 inning games. the only flaw in the plan is a terrible 8th inning performance. that’s it. there is no magic trick, there is nothing the offense should have done differently, there is no other game plan that should have been executed. the 8th inning guy is not supposed to give up 6 runs and he did.

by ab03 on Apr 12, 2009 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I will not defend him

I think there were three balls that were lucky on the Tigers’ part. At some point, though, the team needs to contain the damage. They shouldn’t have allowed more than two runs in that inning.

Does he have options? I wouldn’t mind seeing him sent down until he grows a set of balls back. He doesn’t take bad luck well. Gets frustrated too easily…seems to me that he thinks the game should be easier, which may be a sign of Wilson thinking he’s better than he is. In other words, arrogance.

by Black Francis on Apr 12, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

if he gets sent down, we're not seeing him again

not that that should detract us from sending him down – just saying. he wont’ be able to come back from that

Has he lost velocity?

I thought I remembered him around 92-95 a few years ago. He never had control but he use miss some bats with his fastball.

He's actually gained velocity.

I’m too lazy to look at what other peripherals and such say right now, and I can’t really see through the blinding red.

You can have a look here, though.

by philkid3 on Apr 12, 2009 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

He appears to be way too weak mentally to come back from being sent to the minors.

Figuring out who sticks and who needs to be replaced.

by Black Francis on Apr 12, 2009 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

he’ll get a few more chances at the 8th inning role. He’s certainly not getting canned in an inning extended by an error. but i bet we’ll see him again in the 8th inning at least 2 more times.

exactly

why anyone would say that a guy can’t handle getting demoted but can handle high-pressure MLB games is beyond me.

He can’t handle the pressure for some reason.

My dread is that the Rangers will let go of him and he’ll figure it out at some point in the future, and everyone will blame JD. But maybe someone will hold up games like this to explain why.

C.J. Wilson's WPA: -0.731

That’s astounding!

It’s fun to say “so and so single handedly cost us the game,” but that’s rarely true and usually stupid if it’s meant as anything more than exageration.

But Ceej came pretty close by WPA, today. He was almost worth an entire loss all by himself in the span of one inning.

by philkid3 on Apr 12, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah....

but he wasn’t that bad other than the home run and the last double! Just unlucky.

by JBImaknee on Apr 12, 2009 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I was saying that while it was going down

…but at some point you have to buckle down and get a strike out or something.

by Black Francis on Apr 12, 2009 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Seems to me 6 games in the rangers are the same

as they were last year, they have 2 starters (need to find 3 others) and 1 or 2 in the bullpen who are worth a crap, they did nothing in the off season and so here we are right back where we started, with a Manager who is a good coach but does not have the tools to manage and an owner who Only cares about money and not winning

by TRFAN on Apr 12, 2009 2:46 PM CDT reply actions

Last year they didn't even have two starters

so we’re a little better off if Padilla and especially Millwood can keep this up.

Wash’s managing is what it is. CJ is at the place in the depth chart that puts him in that game right there. He stuck with him too long. But he can only work with the guys he has.

I don’t know what the last three days have revealed about Hicks, other than the fact that he should have signed Cruz. But who knows where that decision was made. And many teams were out on Juan Cruz for some reason or another, not just the Rangers.

by JBImaknee on Apr 12, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Everyone focuses on Cruz

But there was Joe Beimel, Will Ohman, Denys Reyes, will Ohman, Joe Nelson….all cheaper than Cruz, I believe.

"Who died and made you King?"

by randyd on Apr 12, 2009 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree that they should have tried to address it

but I simply don’t attribute their not addressing the bullpen to Tom Hicks being cheap. That is just a huge leap.

My guess is the team just didn’t like any of those options more than their current mediocre options.

by JBImaknee on Apr 12, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

There should be plenty of relievers, in fact.

An average pitcher is roughly a little bit above replacement level as a reliever. By definition, that means plenty of average pitchers who can pitch from the bullpen are available and shouldn’t cost more than league minimum.

C.J. Wilson was WAY below average last year (63 tRA+) and slightly below two years ago (97). So we have a reliever who should have trouble getting a job anywhere and could likely cheaply be replaced #2 in our bullpen depth chart.

This is pretty fail.

by philkid3 on Apr 12, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Word

as proven by a guy like Jennings, it’s bullpen construction at this point.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 12, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

how many of those teams had the worst pen in the league last year?

or 2nd worst or whatever it was. the rangers needed a good reliever.

the preceding post was a great success.

Mental Toughness

Great late-inning guys have it, I don’t think CJ does. Any adversity, and he crumbles.
talent yes, mental toughness no. And Wash has no better options.
