Evan and Richard say, calm down
Evan Grant and Richard Durrett each have separate blog posts today that say, in essence, "Settle down, everyone, the world isn't coming to an end..."
Evan Grant focuses more on why firing Ron Washington and releasing C.J. Wilson isn't going to solve anything, while Richard looks at some of the positives from the first week (such as Ian Kinsler, above).

A bunch of people...

Yep
Read that on Inside Corner yesterday. Some made it sound like he was a three legged dog on the bump trying to toss the ball with his red rocket.

it would be stupid to release CJ
he is still our 2nd best reliever.
people tend to overreact, especially after such a difficult loss as yesterdays
"Take me out to the ball game, Take me out with the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks, I don't care if I never get back, Let me root, root, root for the RANGERS, If they don't win it's a shame. For it's one, two, three strikes, your out, At the old ball game."

I still would make him a LOOGY
and I don’t care if it is an overreaction. I’ll take my chances with Jennings as the setup guy until CJ shows a little consistent dominance as a LOOGY.

This is pretty much where I am on the whole situation as well
At least for a while… if he gets his guy out, then it boosts his confidence and he can work toward being a full set-up guy again. If he can’t get that guy out, the damage will be minimized and if he can’t do that job consistently, the path the organization needs to take with CJ will become more clear.

The whole offseason
all we get to get emotional about is a mess of NRIs.
Of course folks are going to overreact at things the first week of the season, and of course they are especially going to overreact when they blow a 4 run lead in the 8th. That’s one of the things that makes baseball a talking sport.

I heard it on the Astros broadcast while I was out for lunch. Kalas Broadcasted Astros games in the ’60s.

3-3
is where I had projected them to be after 6 games anyhow. Pitchers go through slumps just the same as hitters. Is anyone wanting Davis to be released?
A big homestand for the Rangers. They need to win 4 of the 6 before heading to Toronto.

Davis has a better track record and higher assumed upside than Wilson.
Not that I want Wilson released (I think he can be a solid LOOGY unless better comes along), but I don’t think the comparison is fair.
by philkid3 on Apr 13, 2009 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
the difference is that
Wilson has had some success this year, whereas Davis has had none. But seriously, it is way too early to evaluate anyone to the point of deciding to release him. And as little faith as I have in Wash, I still think it is too early to decide whether he should be around all year. With the exception of a guy like Madrigal, who only made the team because of the injuries to Nip and Eyre and who could truly benefit from more time in AAA ball, I think everyone should have until the end of the month before they are released or reassigned.

Firing Washington
I never put much stock into those people here who called for Washington to be fired. I thought more time was needed, and I always liked the guy (not really sure why). Still, I see no problem with how the Rangers constructed their bullpen. It may not be the greatest, but good bullpen management should be able to get holds until the ninth.
With the Rangers supposedly competing for the playoffs next season, I have to wonder when Washington needs to have learned from his mistakes. More importantly, will he learn from his mistakes? Does management feel he is making mistakes?

Fair point
If you had told most of us a week ago that the team would be 3-3, the offense would be good, the starting pitching would be ok, and the bullpen would be bad, nobody would have been surprised. In fact, that’s what most of us were expecting.
It’s only how it’s happened that’s surprising.

DFA Wilson and Madrigal, force Hicks to sell the team, demolish the ballpark, salt the earth, build an ark.

So the Rangers go in pairs…
2 Aging vet starting pitchers….
2 young 1B
2 Catchers
2 DH’s
2 former closers
2 Venezuelan amazing defending SS
2 beasticons
2 retread older SP
2 left feilders

demolishing the park. i’m guessing i would need to pay for new seat options. f that.
i tried to do the math on some cowboy options today. anywhere between the goal lines will cost min 16,000 per seat +3400 per year.
assuming no time value of money, no interest on the 80% payment spread over 30 years (it’s 8%) and no increase in ticket prices, you seat costs $400 per game. factor those things in, and it will be $500 – $600 or more per game… per seat.

So...
I obviously watched the game yesterday and was probably as pissed as anyone else here. I wasn’t around LSB though with the holiday (because many of you here know how religious I am) and I can’t bring myself to read the GDT or some of the other stuff about the game though.
I can’t even imagine what was said, but I’m sure gonna try:
1) Fire Wash he sucks and can’t manage.
2) DFA Ceej, he sucks and can’t pitch.
3) MY still sucks at 3rd base.
4) Andrus isn’t ready for The Show still.
5) Send CD down to AAA and call up Smoak already.
6) The Rangers offense sucks, only 5 hits? WTF?
Did I miss anything?

All this talk of calming down is unnecessary.
This wasn’t a loss to get up in arms about, this was a soul-crushing loss. Like the 15-16 loss to Boston last year. I’m not upset, i’m depressed. Only people with hope bother to get up in arms.

The way I see it...
The way I see it is that your casual fan was too optomistic after a solid 3 game series against the Indians (well the first game was pretty solid anyway). And now your casual fan is way too pessimistic after a terrible 3 game series against the Tigers. I’d say a happy medium between the two extremes is where we need to be after 6 games of varying success or failure for this team.
