Fidrych, 54, dies in apparent accident
Associated Press<!-- end mod-article-title --> <!-- begin story body -->
BOSTON -- Former All-Star pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych has been found dead in an apparent accident at his farm in Northborough, Massachusetts. He was 54.
Worcester County district attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. says a family friend found Fidrych about 2:30 p.m. Monday beneath a pickup truck. He appeared to be working on the truck, Early said.
The colorful right-hander was the American League rookie of the year in 1976 when he went 19-9 with a 2.34 earned run average. He spent all five of his major league seasons with the Detroit Tigers, compiling a 29-19 record and a 3.10 ERA.
His career was cut short by injuries.

This sucks
Just watched him pitching a game against NYY this weekend on MLB. The place was electric, he was like a rock star. All his eccentricities were on full display- cultivating the mound, talking to the ball and his self. After the last out he ran to every player to shake their hand, even shook the 3rd base ump’s hand out of sheer joy. Post game interview was great also- liked to throw out ‘damn’ a lot, in an ‘aw shucks’ way. “Damn, I don’t know, I was just pitching.” The ‘Bird’ was one of a kind.

R.I.P. Bird
You were one unique and colorful figure, truly one of a kind.
Josh Hamilton puts his pants on one leg at a time just like you but once he gets his pants on he hits baseballs 420 feet.

So weird.
Just yesterday I was watching his Monday Night Baseball game on MLBN and that sent me in to a random hour of finding Fidrych stuff to read online.

The Bird
I saw him pitch in Arlington during his rookie year. It was very memorable. Watching him “talk to himself” on the mound was very cool. I sat on the 3rd base side with my Dad. I think the seats were about $7. Also. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the guy speak. But something about his body language was so positive. He just had a great energy about him.
