Shouldn't the standard suspension for pitchers

be 9 games, so that they have to miss a start? 6 games just moves him back in the rotation by 2 spots. Yawn.

On pitchers it should be # of appearances...i.e. 1 day=1start

But on this issue I think the suspension of Beckett is more for him coming of the mound, not that he “threw” at Abreu. 6days seems a little excedssive.

And it is time that MLB institutes a rule that time can not be granted to a batter, once a pitcher has come set and ready to pitch.

Rule

Pitchers can stand there “set and ready to pitch” for a long time. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few more umpires making the determination that it’s “too late” to call time out. But you can’t do away with a time out because of “set and ready to pitch”.

if the umps would enforce the 12sec rule on pitchers

this would rarely be an issue…

12 seconds

I’d love to see them enforce the 12 second rule.
But 12 seconds is still a long time. Windy day, dust in the eye… I still want the batter to be able to call time.

They can enforce the 12 second rule

Right after they enforce the 10 second rule on NBA free throws.

That rule exists

The umpire has the discretion to not allow the time out.
If the pitcher is in motion, and the ump here’s “time”… he can ignore it and call the ball/strike as he sees it. They need to do this more often. Admittedly, this gets humorous at times.

Pitcher starts his motion.
Batter calls “time”.
Ump ignores it.
Pitcher having heard the “time” continues his throw, but does a soft toss.
Ump calls it a ball.

I can’t think of a perfect solution, but I don’t think removing “time out” from the game of baseball is the solution.

That was intentional, and Beckett should recieve a much longer, 15-20 game, suspension!!!

Didn't look to me...

like Beckett was trying to throw at him. Looks like he interrupted his throwing motion because of the sudden time out. Umps should use better judgement when calling time.

by Redcaps on Apr 14, 2009 5:18 PM CDT reply actions

+1

I agree. When I had heard about this, I figured that he softened his throw and lost control of it, so it sailed. That’s obviously not the case, he’s throwing pretty damn hard, but there is now way you can ignore the fact that the ump throws his arms up in the air and calls time. Regardless if you think Beckett was taking too much time or whatever, the ump definitely distracts him and then the throw is off.
I’ve never pitched competitively, but I’m pretty sure keeping your eyes on your target is a pretty big part of placing a pitch, and that definitely affected the pitch.
I’m not a huge Beckett fan, but I think you’re bias if you can determine that Beckett threw at him intentionally based on that video. And Hunter was the one that looked like the biggest douche out there to me.

It must be so fun running in from the bullpen

Hey guys, I’m here for the parade, too!

Wee! Look at me jog! Damn, this is fun.

This is just great. I love benches clearing and nothing but posturing.

Kudos to Mr. Beckett.

Friend and I were talking about this Friday night when they wore those dark blue or black jerseys vs. the Angels – we think they look so cheap because they have no piping. It just looks like a t-shirt or BP jersey.

they are kind of crappy

it’s like their 1980s uniforms except with NOB and that these button up.
I thought they were fugly then and these are even fuglier; it’s so hard to read the back when you’re far away, too.
