Congratulations Rangers Fans!!

I was so proud of Rangers fans last night.  I didn't see any of the game or any highlights so I just had to go by the box score but seeing that only 12,184 people showed up brought a smile to my face.  That is the lowest attendance ever recorded at the Ballpark for a regularly scheduled game.

I know it was a Monday night.  I know it was the Orioles.  I know that the Mavericks were also playing in town.  I know that the economy blows.  However, It is still a wonderful thing to have that place so empty.....and it's only taken 10 years of suckitude.  It's about time the fans give the collective finger to the Rangers until they put a legitimate product on the field.  Maybe we can break that record again tonight.  I doubt it will happen tomorrow though since it's dollar hot dog night.

Congrats to all of those that didn't show up and those that did go should ask for a refund.

That was the ANNOUNCED attendance

I was there…there couldn’t have been more than 9 or 10 K ACTUALLY in attendance.

Derek Jeter sucks. How's that for a quote.

and

after Padilla’s bad inning like a third of the crowd got up. A good number of them were just going to get food and stuff, but it looked to me like a noticeable number of them stayed gone.

That's right!

Because if there’s one thing that’s going to get this team to spend more money, it’s definitely lower revenues! Great thinking!

Rewarding failure

with attendance certainly doesn’t work. We’ve seen proof of that throughout the ’00s.

Umm...

How about you go to a game because you like baseball instead of as a reward to the ball club?

When it comes down to it,

if I’m going to go see a game and spend my money, I’m a fan of the Texas Rangers. I’m going to go see the big boys, at the big stadium. I’m not going to NOT go see them (or go to Frisco instead) just to make a statement.

I actually enjoy the games more in frisco

it’s cheaper, closer to home and there’s less traffic and parking headaches

I am a fan of the Rangers, not the Frisco Roughriders.

And if you go out to a game, you’ll see that the lack of attendance has done wonders for parking.

hell yes

last night was great — all these whiners need to stay home so I can get in and out of the stadium in 10 minutes every night.

it's possible to be a fan of both teams

the fact that i live 10minutes from frisco greatly influences me going to more games there.
i’d like to go to more ranger games, but going to arlington after work and having to drive 40minutes home on a weeknight is too much of a beat down.

i’m just glad that i’m able to go to baseball games at all

Yeah I'm the same way

I’d love to go to Frisco games, but living in Mansfield makes that damn near impossible — but I do go to Rangers games since I live 10-15 from the ballpark.

I agree with this.

But, at the same time, I do think this team has done quite a bit towards trying to reward us in recent years. The lay-fan may not quite realize what Davis, Andrus and Tea/Salty represent, but I don’t think this is necessarily a time for protest.

I doubt it

there isn’t a better market available than DFW.

The company would be profitable, if Hicks hadn’t loaded it down with debt so he could buy a soccer team.

They'll gain other fans.

Though you will be missed; the new fans from Frisco or something will probably be just a bunch of weirdos.

hey, kiss it

Dallas gets all those cute arena sports and arlington is where you go if you wanna see sports with a field involved.

It's absolutely amazing

that the franchise can have losing records, then raise ticket prices in the face of the recession, and see attendance drop.

Who would’ve thought it? I’m wondering if the business crew for the Rangers used to work at GM.

ticket prices

That was a really stupid move, just from a symbolic standpoint more than anything. When one of Arlington’s biggest employers, GM, is headed for bankruptcy and people are losing their jobs, Hicks shouldn’t have raised prices. I don’t understand how he made all of his millions.

Especially in an offseason

where all they added was NRIs. You would have thought they would have frozen ticket prices, and maybe even cut prices in some of the crappier seats they don’t sell anyway, like the Grandstand Reserveds (or whatever price point tickets didn’t sell last year), just so they could announce a price cut.

The thought of announcing a price hike after a losing season where your attendance has plunged, you have only added NRIs as your upgrade and you are in the teeth of one of the biggest recessions in decades just boggles my mind. Nolan Ryan may need to worry less about the baseball operations and start firing some folks in the business operations. At least the baseball operations guys have a stacked minor league to point to. The marketing guys have absolute shit to point to.

They are like those restaurants

who respond to a recession by raising the price of their soda drinks. Gee, that makes sense. Raise prices on the first thing people will stop buying and the thing that gives you a 95% profit margin.

Just FYI

There are very few teams in baseball that need gate revenue to have any effect on payroll. Those are NYY, NYM, Stl, Oak and if I remember correctly Det and LAD.

So thinking that lagging attendance will force the team to change is a major mistake. Go look at the Forbes Business of Baseball reports and compare Total Revenue from Gate Revenue. In most cases you will find gate revenue has little to do with the economic viability of a baseball team.

It falls back to teams knowing that if you win the fans will come back. Very simple.

And also there have been several studies done that show that the amount of money spent has very little correlation to how many games you win. it has a lot to do with the idea of the Yankees and Red Sox buying playoff appearances. But for every one of those guys you have the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariner of last year.
