OT: Taxes
I should have hired somebody to do this like I have every year since I started making decent money. But I didn't, and I want to watch baseball (priorities, man) so I had to file an extension.
Went to IRS website and was directed to get form blah blah blah, and when I went to fill it out it seemed like I needed to have my taxes done before I could complete it.
Fail.
So I dug around the Google. Turns out Turbo Tax will e-file an extension for you. I followed the link and got in there, and at first it was almost as crazy as the IRS form. Did manage to complete it, but then it only gave me an option to print and mail it to Austin. Well, I don't have any stamps and live in the ghetto so that's no good. Would rather not deal with it tomorrow, ya know?
But after some more digging on the Turbo Tax site it turns out that they DO have an option to e-file an extension and it required all of about thirty seconds of time. So as a public service to my fellow Rangers fans, I am providing this invaluable link in case you're in a similar situation or whatever.
So they'll do that for you and for free, and now you can hire someone who knows what they're doing to prepare your taxes. Thanks, TurboTax! I may even use them, who knows. Any opinions on that?

Thanks for the research & linkage. I am going to efile my extension, as I was trying to do my taxes last night too, and was partially distracted by Ranger suckage, and really pissed I owe so much this year.

Did them yesterday
-Free e-filed Federal using Turbo Tax Free
-Free e-filed State (CA) through ftb.ca.gov
-Refund coming my way.
-In and out in < 2 hours.
Priceless.
BTW, did anyone else know that Bush’s “Federal Stimulus Check” was just essentially an interest-free loan? I guess it’s my responsibility to find out about that, but it still burns me that politicians spin that $hit.
Tell us up front, it’s a frigging interest-free loan, then, maybe people won’t be so damn confused as to why the stimulus check seems to “take money away from your refund.”

you mean the home buyer credit?
if so, i thought it was fairly well publicized it was an interest free loan.
if you buy this year its just free money (for first time home buyers that is)

housing tax credit
The recently enacted stimulus bill is a fully refundable tax credit. The earlier program had been a loan, but it was changed to a full credit.
I’m not sure what Req is referring to, exactly.

Stimulus checks sent out in 2008
AFAIK, those payments are not taxable income. To the extent you received the payment due to you for your status, you don’t then qualify for the “recovery rebate credit” (essentially, another chance for those who didn’t receive the stimulus payment they qualified for to get the equivalent of that payment).

…for a person who has lots of deductions? I haven’t used a program like that since I was in 1040EZ mode.

I've used
TT for the past 9 years filing the full 1040 form each year. It’s incredibly easy to use, and the “deduction maximizer” will take you through step by step of every possible deduction you can claim. Once I finally decide to sit down and do it, it generally only takes me about a half an hour to complete it. I highly recommend it.

I use Turbo Tax
and I have a home office, and self-employment stuff, including amortizing a piano purchase, mortgage, childcare, etc. Turbo Tax handled it all with ease, and I just use the cheapest version. The upgrades don’t really offer anything necessary for doing your own business stuff if you’re a sole proprietor or fairly small.

I tell people...
that if you file early and get a refund, you can use the refund to make your 2008 IRA contribution. And if you prepare your taxes early and owe money, you can at least have it all done and ready to go on tax day… it’s a much more effective use of your time, because if you need to call anyone for clarifications, they’ll be much less busy in Feb. than in April.

The person I had been using for the last several years
Was some kind of drug addict but used to work at the IRS. She had some other job and only prepared a few people’s taxes probably because most people are put off by the drug habit. But she did my taxes well. Disappeared this year, though.
I don’t do the IRA thing and if I’m going to owe a bunch of money I’ll know about it before hand.
This is just a weird year for me in lots of ways. But your advice is perfectly sound for most people.

My parents know her. It’s not uncommon for her to disappear for a while. One time she went to Alaska. Another time to France or something.
Anyway she’s good at taxes. I guess if you can make enough money to feed your drug habit you can still be functional, depending on what drug it is.

What I object to is your black-and-white view where a point for a non-completely market economy is approximately the flipside of an argument against command economies.

Pay the IRS
For all you extension filers, don’t forget
if you are going to owe money, you need to send the IRS money along with your extension.
Otherwise you will be paying some interest on what you owe.
If it is a small amount it usually does not matter too much, but if you owe a lot then it could be a lot.

OK
I did end up using the extension. I have more questions that befuddle me if Ben or anybody wants to answer.
Okay I’ve had my little Ameritrade account to play with the last couple years..long story short while I traded various stocks/funds in that span, while at one time I was up about $4000, I ended up pulling out when the market crashed and all, sold everything I had. At that time in the aggregate I was DOWN about 1500. I know because I kept track of how much money I put into the account, and of course how much was left when I removed it all.
I guess I dont understand how taxes work on this at ALL.
Is every stock buy and sell taxed separately? Or do they just look at the aggregate? Like I said I know as a total account I ended up down like 1500. But I have no idea how that broke down amongst my various stocks sales.
The problem was when I was trying to efile, I got a 1099-B from Ameritrade, but A) it doesnt list the buy date on stocks (at least ones I didn’t buy in 08). And when you are inputting stock trades in the efile, it asks for a buy date, or at least whether the stock was held over/under a year etc..so confusing, since some of these stocks I probably bought sold many different times, who knows how much/if was over/under a year? How in the hell do say, day traders keep up with all this?
It also asks for a “cost basis” on the efile for each stock, which I understand is basically what I paid for it. I dont know how to get this either, it’s not on my 1099-B (you’d think it should be).
Any ideas? I filed an extension for now, also cus of the house thing.
by Sharky on Apr 15, 2009 11:27 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Your 1099...
only lists gross proceeds from sales. You’re going to have to generate a profit/loss for your schedule D. Fortunately, AMTD has already done that for you… go to Accounts —> Gain/Loss —> Tax Reports. Specify the date range 1/1/08 – 12/31/08, the report is called “Realized for Schedule D-1.” Then click “View HTML.”

by benmor78 on Apr 15, 2009 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I should also say...
that daytraders keep track of this stuff using Quicken or the in-house Gainskeeper. One thing to keep note of is the wash sale rule. If you don’t use the realized gain/loss report from AMTD, you’re going to have to tally your own wash sales… so use the gain/loss report.
