Xady hurt, trade Byrd?
Yankees have an aweful outfield and if Xady goes down for a while, they'll need a RH replacement. Jones and Byrd are options, but I see the Rangers wanting to hold onto Jones until at least the trade deadline.
Byrd enough to pull a young starter or a decent bullpen arm?
Nady may need season-ending surgery BY KAT O'BRIEN |kat.obrien@newsday.com April 16, 2009 <!-- sphereit start --> ST. PETERSBURGH, Fla. - Xavier Nady could be headed for season-ending surgery on his right elbow.
No decision will be made until after team physician Chris Ahmad examines Nady in New York Thursday. But Nady, who left Tuesday night's game here after feeling a sharp pain in his elbow, underwent an MRI Wednesday morning, and the initial diagnosis, according to Joe Girardi, is "not good."

The Yankees were in on Jones
in the offseason. He might be the better trade option right now. IMO What could the Rangers get for him I have no idea what they could get for him or Byrd. Where is Z he could tell us.

Byrd
I have always been in favor of trading Byrd, however, I am starting to think we should keep Byrd all year and play him. I think he can at least end up a Type B free agent. We would need to get something back better than a potential supp. 1st round to trade him.

exactly
Byrd has at least a chance to be type B.

IF he gets the PT
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Byrd is better than people think
I would much rather have him than Murphy. Will Byrd bring more in a trade? yes, but I don’t think you do this right now.

The problem is
I don’t think Murphy has much trade value, but I agree with you that Byrd is better.

byrd >> murphy (one of top 10 CF in abseball last year IIRC _- like at 9 or 10, but still)

If we played Byrd in CF every night
I think he would have similar value to GMJ after he left here.

If the Rangers...
can get a good pitching prospect for Byrd from the Yankees, White Sox, or someone else then they need to do it. The guy has been great the last couple years, but he will be a FA after this year and the Rangers have the depth in the OF to deal him.
Only if they get a good pitching prospect back though. I wouldn’t give up Byrd for a couple of C grade guys. He will probably be a Type B FA so the Rangers know they could just keep him. Especially since he seems to be a great guy to have around the clubhouse and can play all 3 OF positions above average.

Well
They had Nick Swisher on the bench. He’ll replace Nady, and they’ll probably be better as a result.

And Melky is at Triple-A, right?
He’ll probably get the call.
by tyd3311 on Apr 16, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Probably
And if they trade for a backup OF’er, they’ll probably go find an overpriced role player who is a salary dump, rather than giving up a good player for Byrd.

Joel Sherman
has an article up today in the New York Post talking about the OF situation. He says despite being able to slide Swisher in, the Yankees still should be worried because Matsui and Damon are both 34/35 and Matsui has looked terrible. They don’t have a backup OF now. It’s on MLB Trade Rumors. I don’t know how to link things, sorry.

nady ~= swisher anyway
thats the bigger problem is that they dont believe in melky and need someone who can handle multiple OF positions which to me in a nutshell is byrd lol

Byrd
The Rangers wouldn’t even consider trading him now unless they got a starting pitcher they could plug into the rotation immediately (which they won’t) or a Carlos Marmol type reliever (which they won’t). He’s almost certainly gone at the deadline if the Rangers are out of contention.

Cubbies could of had him for Marshall last year
Everyone thought JD was asking for to much but I think he was right on.

CHW
Kenny Williams in Chicago usually doesn’ t wait around for the deadline to make a deal. Maybe he will call up JD sometime in June. Unfortunately, I think Williams usually gets the better end of the deal.

Tough call
Just wait for them to come to us. Make sure everyone knows that Marlon is available and see what happens. He should be a type B so if someone wants to beat that, fine. Otherwise, roll on.

I love Byrd
but he is a pretty streaky hitter, and we have other options now that Andruw has “emerged”. I would trade him in a heartbeat for a pitcher like David Robertson and never think twice about the type B status. I doubt we could get him, though, unless the Yanks panic.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
