Dustin Nippert update
Per the S-T, Dustin Nippert is going to be on the shelf for a bit. He has a rib cage strain that has slowed him, and under the MLB rules, he can't start a new re-hab assignment until April 23, according to Thad Levine.
So it is probably early May before Nippert is going to be an option for the major league team.

Probably doesn’t matter. If he were to go on the 60-day DL would it be back dated to March 27?

That would clear up a spot on the 40

yeah
My fear is that Turnbow has another "good outing and the Rangers decide to give him a shot. They would have to move Nippert to the 60 and probably DFA Rupe. I am not sure Rupe would get claimed but is it worth the risk?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
I do not fear Turnbow coming up at all
I think he would have to put together a real good month before he gets the call, then I may look forward to seeing him.
Rupe
How long do the Rangers keep giving him the ball? He sucked again last night. A walk and a 2 run HR in his one inning. Don’t you think the Rangers want to find out about Turnbow, Gordon or ??? in the next month or so before Diamond and/or Strop are ready to be called up?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
It wouldn't bother me at all
if they ran Rupe through waivers. My guess is he’d probably clear.

No walk
Got two outs, gave up an infield single, then the HR to Adam Jones. Walks/wildness have been a significant problem for him, but not last night (13 strikes out of 16 pitches, according to the box). Not sure about Gordon or ???, but Turnbow hasn’t done much in OKC to make you think he deserves a look. Maybe if he can string together a few good outings.
I don't mind the appearance last night
Mike Young makes the play, inning over. Key is he threw strikes, like you said. The HR wasn’t fun to watch, but I’d rather a guy give up a HR here and there and throw tons of strikes than walk the bases loaded…

He didn't suck last night...
he got 3 groundballs on the IF. The 3rd was a slow roller at MY that he had to eat. Then came the HR.
I would much rather the Rangers DFA Benson and put Feldman back in the rotation than DFA Rupe. Benson showed me very little yesterday. His velocity is crap and his control isn’t any better. I’m sure I’m in the minority as far as that goes though. I know most here are done with Rupe. I still think he could be a good bullpen arm.

Benson's next 5 starts
project to be vs TOR, BALT, CWS, @OAK, SEA. The Seattle game is on 5/12. I don’t have much confidence in him either. It will be interesting to see how he does in Baltimore. As for Rupe, I agree with you. He can still have some value to the Rangers. But I think he has a very short leash right now.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
I'd think
he’d have to pick it up a bit to make May, unless injury hits someone else.
I still don’t buy that Rupe will ever be a pitcher, unless, of course, he gets traded elsewhere and they change his arm slot or teach him a cutter.

I'm pro-Rupe
and anti-Benson, too…
but I say one more implosion and then he’s gone…so let Kris keep tossing for a few more weeks until we have our first callup. I wanted Feldman in the rotation, but what’s done is done. Roll with the punches for now.

If he has another "good outing", that would make two
Unless they decide to at least try him out before his opt-out date, I can’t imagine that he’s at the top of the list of reinforcements.
I guess it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to try him out if putting Nippert is going to be gone until May. Purchase Turnbow’s contract and if he’s a flaming gasoline can for a game or two, well, the odds are the other bullpen choices those nights would have been just as bad. DFA him and purchase Holland’s contract.
If he miraculously throws strikes, keep him and remove someone else from the 40 (i.e. Rupe if he continues to suck) when Nippert comes back.
Keith Law: (1:45 PM ET ) I think Michael Young should shut his mouth and move to third base.
Well that's par for the course..DAMN!
Josh Hamilton puts his pants on one leg at a time just like you but once he gets his pants on he hits baseballs 420 feet.

Did all of you who are upset about this
really think that Dustin Nippert was the solution to our bullpen problems? I don’t wish that he would get hurt, but I don’t think he was going to be the linchpin that fixes all the problems that we were facing.
I don't think he would fix everything
but I know who isn’t the answer and any halfway decent arm is an improvement over that.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

if you have a leak, you patch it up.
if you have a pipe with 5 leaks in various places, you can’t patch it up. you have to replace it. with that said, moving Mad Dog down and replacing him with a strike-throwing Eyre, and a guy who can throw in the mid-to-upper 90’s like Nippert coming onto the scene with hopefully improved command would change a lot for this bullpen.
