Minors 4/16

Moving on to tonight, Neftali Feliz and Kasey Kiker are both scheduled to pitch, and I'll be in Frisco to check out their opener. Blake Beavan's turn is up for Bakersfield, but their website shows the starter as TBD. For Hickory, Jake Brigham will try to provide an encore for his nice return to the mound over the weekend.

That from Zebra cakes.

Shroom's calendar also has Brigham, C-Wun, Kiker and Feliz starting.

I am excited.

Martin Perez

He could make an appearance in relief tonight. The original plan for him was to tandem start with Brigham. The make-up DH last week delayed that, but we could see Perez return to bullpen duty tonight. If not Perez will start tomorrow. We’ll see.

But, defensively he looked butt ass terrible. Like truck stop hooker bad. The one ball he played into a “single” was a pretty easy grounder he just butchered. Got a real thick lower half on him and doesn’t have real quick feet. I can’t believe this guy played SS in high school. He’s got a strong arm, I’ll give him that. But let’s just say after 12 innings of amateur-as-hell scouting by me, he’s got a lot of improving to do if he wants to stay at 3b.

To be fair

Young isn’t that much of a soft tosser, at least according to a couple of his scouting videos. Of course rating a LOOGY type highly as a prospect is sort of like ranking a deep snapper highly in the draft. As far as Jamey, he does sort of rotate that 20th spot to a notable guy, not necessarily the 20th best prospect in the system, if I recall correctly from last year. Not that that should slow dirkatron’s outrage by any means.

Any word on his velocity?

No, I don’t completely buy into those “he’ll be a fine pitcher throwing at 90 mph” posts.

I propose a 5-year moratorium on trading any young Ranger pitchers who throw over 90 mph.

so, I feel like we can pretty much write off any chance of that velocity returning

Marcus Lemon

20 ABs, 11 Hits, twice as many XBH (4) and as many BBs (2) as Ks (2). Oh and his LD%? 40%. Yeah, he’s starting the year hot.

Meh

they roughed up Tim Alderson pretty well. If Moreland hits well, this lineup will have some punch.

Hickory, on the other hand, will continue to suck greatly offensively.

Bizarro Golson with 3 walks and Bizarro Borbon with 2?

Sucks to see Littleton get chased without retiring a batter. Seems like a good kid.

makes it sound like both guys suddenly learned to walk. Meanwhile the Nashville pitchers are embarrassed they gave up that many walks to them and Arias.

Not blown away by Kiker. He can be a major league pitcher, but something (command, velocity, nastiness of the curve/slurve) would really have to come on for him to be a difference maker.

He never stood right by anyone that I noticed, but Lemon don’t look no 5’11". He is a good, unexplosive player, though.

I was pretty turned off by Vallejo’s effort on the GB that scored Kiker’s last two runs.

Beau Jones was 86-90, bleh.

Lemon's defense?

what’s the word on it? Is it steady? He just seems to do so many things right…work the count, hit for contact, lay down a bunt, move a runner, and we all know his intangibles are off the charts. I understand that his ceiling may be lower than a few of our other top prospects, but i worry that we could be undervaluing a glue guy…a Marlon Byrd-type who plays in the infield. When we project our team out into the future, I think he’s the guy I want as our utility man.

future utility man

I’ve had the same thought about Lemon, but I’m just so intriqued by Vallejo in that role. I guess it’s a matter of preference. Would you rather have a solid on base machine or a plus defense, plus-plus speed demon in that role?

If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.

Vallejo

Look where good IF defense got Andrus…

Sometimes I think Vallejo’s earmarked to take over for Ian, move him to the OF in a couple years.

I think Vallejo's upside

gives him more trade value than Lemon, so I have a feeling Vallejo is going to be a prime trade chip for this team over the next 12 months.

See I think teams will value a steady bat more, and if Lemon puts up a line around his BAK numbers…that’ll be more than steady enough.

Lemon’s not Andrus-young, but he is so, so young.

Lemon

His skill-set generally isn’t the type that generates as much value via trade.

Teams generally seem to prefer the Andrus/Arias/Beltre toolshed collection, with its inherent upside, to the Lemon types.

Would you trade Golson for Lemon?

I wouldn’t without grab-me-by-the-lapel firsthand evidence from my scouts.

To treat this very simply, D seems more malleable….either via extra reps or even a position switch.

but if a guy in his 20/21 y.o. season puts up something similar to Lemon’s BAK numbers in AA, I treat that as advanced offense, and probably not something I can beat into a player at that age with reps and BP.

Even simpler: Vallejo is less likely to become Jeff Kent than Marcus Lemon. Yes, I know that neither will.

I think Beltre for Lemon is a better question

Golson is a no brainer IMO.

It was just one game watching him for me, but steady seems like a good word. He made two nice plays, neither showing an incredible arm or terrific range, but he looked polished enough that you would hope his error total will go down this season.

How horribly disappointing about Kiker. **Sigh** Kyle Drabek...

Good to hear about Lil’ Lemon.

Vallejo never has done much for me. Hopefully he turns into that Chone Figgins type everyone thinks he can, though.

I just noticed his line this morning.

Four relievers at OKC are off to a stout start. Diamond, Vaughan, Gordon, and Strop are a combined 14.2 IP, 18 K, 3 BB, 3 ER.

JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!

by rooster on Apr 17, 2009 5:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

the thing about Vaughan

is that he throws strikes. even his one walk, which was recorded yesterday, happened with two strikes appeared to be on a series of balls just off the plate. He doesn’t appear to be the sort of guy who could come in and walk the first guy because he simply can’t find the plate. He may never be an overpowering guy, but he definitely seems more “advanced” than most of our other options.

good stuff

thanks for the link. it’s always great to hear that a pitcher made a technical change that coincides with a particular jump in his stat line because it gives credence to the thought that it may be sustainable. if he continues to be able to get lefties out, then he could be a valuable addition to our bullpen.

He had some weird splits last year, while learning his sidearm delivery.

He walked 1 out of every 22 righties but his walk rate against lefties was 1 in 6. This year so far he has faced 6 lefties and walked 1.

His high K-rate against lefties (1 of 3 last year, and 3 of the 6 this year) combined with a really high GB rate v. lefties (63% last year; 100% this year — the two that neither K’d or BB’d) suggests he could become dominant against lefties if the causes of his curious walk rate are diagnosed and removed.

Either way, he’s without a doubt the best prospect the Rangers ever had in terms of who could become the Rangers’ version of Steve Lyons or Bob Uecker.

Beau Vaughan interviews Derek Holland.
