Evan Grant with some comments/thoughts
Evan Grant offers some thoughts and comments on the Rangers' situation and the aftermath of last night's game.
The most eye-opening is the suggestion that Thomas Diamond may be up here sooner rather than later -- as in, possibly Tuesday's game against Toronto.
Diamond was, of course, pegged as a Guy To Watch this spring, someone who had support from folks in the organization and who was looked at as a possible candidate to open the season in the pen.
He had a very disappointing spring, and was never really in the mix, but given where things stand now, it sounds like we could be seeing him in the near future.

slightly OT
looks like the caption is back where it doesn’t belong.
Back to the topic at hand:
So, he pitches terribly for all fo his ST innings, but then might get a chance because of 3 IP of good ball in Triple A? Is it really justifiable to call on him instead of Turnbow? Obviously, you cant’ look at stats here and need to actually see where the pitchers are with their pitches.

Ugh
Those 10 pitchers have allowed 51 of the Rangers free bases in a total of 66.1 innings pitched. Those 10 have a composite .426 opponents on-base percentage.
Can we still blame small sample size?
Why not Vaughn?
scoreless five innings, featuring one hit, one walk, and seven strikeouts
I would have to guess the scouts aren’t that high on him? Too young? Too raw?

Vaughan
He’s not on the 40, but if they decide to get rid of Rupe (who’s out of options), Vaughan could just take Rupe’s 40 man spot.

Diamond? no way.
I think you’ll see Mathis, mendoza, gordon or vaughan before Diamond, and maybe Moscoso or Strop before him. and then Turnbow if he figures it out. and perhaps even hunter later on. What has diamond done to deserve a promotion?
Regardless of who deserves a promotion...
…the decision on who actually gets promoted depends a lot on the organization’s opinion of that player, and how they feel the player is going to do.
Diamond appears to have a lot more support within the organization than any of the guys you listed.

Well I think that is debatable
That support certainly didn’t materialize when he was quickly reassigned to minor league camp and subsequently converted into a reliever in the minors. That was also an arugment you floated for Rupe, however, Wash intimated that he would not have been kept on the roster if Eyre/and or Nippert were healthy.
Rupe
Yes, that was an argument I floated with Rupe. That’s why he’s still here, and Kam Loe is gone, and Wes Littleton is gone, and Mendoza got sent to minor league camp right away, and Mathis was dropped from the 40 man roster this offseason, and Vaughan and Gordon and Moscoso and Strop weren’t ever even seriously considered for the 25 man roster this season.
Rupe came into camp with a bullpen job being his to lose, and he’s been doing his very best to lose it since camp started with his performance.
And yeah, Eyre also falls in the category of having support within the organization, which is why he was put on the 40 man roster and is why as soon as he was healthy he was activated, even though he could have been optioned.

bleh
no necessary correspondence between any of those moves (save for Gordon, but then who cares) and reputed “support” for Rupe, support meaning, “despite all evidence to the contrary we still like Rupe”. Littleton and Loe sucked, “support” for Mendoza is as a starter, “support” for Mathis is as a long-reliever/spot-starter in AAA (depth) etc… Eyre’s “support” during spring training has to do with his placement on the 40 and everything to do with the fact that he beat Rupe out. He wouldve been dropped if he sucked. Vaughan, Moscoso and Strop didn’t merit a chance as each needed innings and Strop didn’t start pitching until 2 weeks before ST.
Also
Wash intimated that he would not have been kept on the roster if Eyre/and or Nippert were healthy.
I don’t think Wash has a ton of say right now about who is on the roster. Particularly when it comes to pitchers…I think he’s about 5th or 6th in the pecking order when it comes to deciding who is on the pitching staff.

Wash intimated this
not because his does not understand his faux commander in chief status but because he was in the meeting where that was the sentiment.
choices
Mendoza and Mathis – They probably want to keep them as starters.
Vaughan – Must not have much confidence in him since they just sent him down to Frisco.
Moscoso – Still in AA.
Strop – Not on 40. It is probably too early to commit a spot to him before…
Gordon – not on 40. Really is a nonprospect but Rangers may want to give him a shot.
Turnbow – Most experienced option. They may want ot give him a chance in order to let the others get some more AAA innings under thier belt.
Given those choices I think Ron Washington would go with Turnbow.

I would be surprised
if RW had zero input into roster moves. It may not be direct input, but RW should at least be communicating with JD enough that JD knows which players down in OKC Ron has an interest in.

Any chance
Vaughan got sent to Frisco so the big club could get a better look? His numbers belie a demotion.

seems a little odd
but stranger things have happened with Rangers pitching. Guy’s older and hardly spectacular but at this point I’m ready to move Rupe, Guardado, and maybe Erye all. Give Vaughn, Gordon, and Diamond a chance. Can they fail worse?
yep
if only he would have signed with TX, but we have bigger problems that can’t be fixed with 1 pitcher.
The "Fire Wash Watch" is on. I say he's gone by April 26th.
If he was signed by Texas
our pitching coaches would find a way to make him a 4.5 ERA pitcher.

him the best pitcher here in the last few seasons.

that Johan Santana would be the best pitcher seen here in quite a few seasons?

Not really
but I think he could be if he pitched with a glove on both hands.

DVD
it would be nice to see Diamond succeed with the Rangers, so the DVD combo didn’t go all to crap for us. At least we’ll see some pitching dividends. (i’m not counting the Josh Hamilton return of course)

Derek Holland has been promoted to the big leagues. Josh Rupe has been DFA’d. More to come on the website.

1 hit shy of a record for an inning. Another horrible start for the big Wang.
