That often works for other teams.

The reason such comebacks haven’t speaked the Rangers historically—and they have had a lot of such comebacks—has been the inconsistency of the starting pitching. They might have an inspiring comeback one night; then the next night their starter got bombed.

I propose a 5-year moratorium on trading any young Ranger pitchers who throw over 90 mph.

Wow, I don’t know how some of you blind homers can possibly defend Hillman’s moves here. Get a clue.

How many batters does he face this inning?? No way he faces more than 2.

He will give up a HR to one of the first two.
Your best reliever has 3 days of rest. Why in the world would you never put him in the game? Is his psyche going to crack if the team doesn’t ahve the lead before he comes in? God I hate this stupid bullpen management.

No way they don’t get a walk off here.
Come on Young, just make it quick. Straighaway CF, second pitch. Do it.
2 pitches. Game over. **** you Farnsworth. **** you Hillman.

These guys are as baseball ignorant

as most Rangers fans are. Since the game was tied going into the home half of the 9th, somebody other than Soria was going to pitch the 9th (and 10th too, if still tied).

by twinkilling on Apr 19, 2009 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

If Soria pitches the 9th...

he wasn’t going to get a win or a save. Unless Hillman wanted Soria to pitch multiple innings, he wasn’t the guy to pitch the 9th.

Cruz was.

He should have brought in Farnsworth when he brought in Cruz and then let Cruz pitch the 9th.

costs nothing. He is basically a stop gap until Holland or Feliz are ready post ASB. Johnson wanted to play for a contender or stay on the west coast like Diggler said. The Rangers fit neither category.

So Kinsler had 2 more steals today. Is he going to keep doing this all season to make him a real threat on the basepaths? I realize he had 20 or so the last couple years and he is really efficient but it seems like he is really looking to steal this year.

It has been said that he has the best instinct out of the Rangers when it comes to stealing bases. When he has such a great jump off the pitcher, its hard to stop him. He could possibly get 30 this year

I still think Feldman

Jennings has pitched pretty good coming out of the pen, so might as well keep him there. Also, he’s still slowly regaining his arm strength after that injury last year. Continue to bring him along slowly, meaning out of the pen. Besides, it seems as though Feldman is much better as a starter than in the pen

That's not hail you see in Frisco....that just Justin Smoak's Home Runs coming back into orbit....

by SCDP on Apr 19, 2009 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

just curiously

why is it that some guys do better out of the pen and some do better in the rotation? Feldman was pretty decent last year, but sucked big time in ‘09 (and’07 as a RP)…I understand he got rode hard and hung up wet last season, but is the only real explaination that he’s more comfortable as a starter than a reliever? Explain, please…

"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"

by Bob Loblaw on Apr 19, 2009 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

I would say the biggest difference is knowing exactly when you pitch as a starter as opposed to having to basically be on call. As a starter, you can throw your bullpen sessions, get in a routine, get yourself prepared mentally and strategically etc. As a reliever, you get the call and you might have 5-6 minutes to get ready. Not sure exactly who you will be facing or in what situation. It’s stressful. Some guys thrive on it, some guys struggle with it. Feldman might just be a guy who needs that preparation time.

by The Best Micah on Apr 19, 2009 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

so, an even dumber question, if you will....

why not plug him into the ol’ rotation? It’s not like Benson is really mowing them down. There’s got to be something more here…if it were such a simple solution, then wouldn’t it have been made already? If the team could get a full year out of the 5th slot like Feldman gave for most of last year, then that’s a HUGE success, no?

"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"

by Bob Loblaw on Apr 20, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

I think it's just to see what Benson can do

Feldman’s more of a known quantity. Not really sure what Benson can do after his injury history. If he stinks then I see the Rangers cutting ties with him and moving Feldman back into the rotation after the possible bullpen arms at AAA are ready to come up.

I should have worded it differently

I do think there is a chance he’ll get optioned to the minors though. I think some of the things he has to learn, he can learn down there.

Teams can carry a guy with an ERA of 6 who is “still learning”, it gets tough to tote guys with ERAs near 9.

So far Harrison has 2 fairly crappy starts, and the clock is ticking. He better mix in some nice starts before the month is out, or he can start enjoying life in OKC or Frisco.

Yankees team ERA = 6.84

Nick Swisher’s ERA of 0 really helping the ERA not being over 7 right now

I haven't read all the GDT stuff...

so maybe this has been addressed, but can anyone tell me why Holland didn’t go out for the 6th instead of Jennings? JJ has looked good, but why bring up Holland as a long man if you aren’t going to use him? Especially considering all the LH and switch hitting guys the Royals had coming up.

It all turned out ok today. The ‘pen pitched well. However is Holland only going to be the long man in blowout games? Is he going to get consistent innings that way? He hasn’t pitched in 7 days now and they have a day off tomorrow. Why not leave him down to start yesterday and then bring him up after the day off tomorrow? I just don’t like the timing of bringing him up this early.

JJ hadn't pitched in several days also.

And the game was still winnable, so I completely agree with Wash/et al on throwing Jennings there.

i think the long man situation is reserved for mop up duty

you know, like the next time we get blown out.

(well, that’s how I’d use him)

The team did not expect Millwood to go 9 last night

if Jennings and/or Wilson got used yesterday who would have pitched today?

I have no problem in bringing him up when they did. You can’t predict the future, especially with bullpen use.

by laxtonto on Apr 19, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

All the proven guys were fresh. Holland isn’t going to languish in the bullpen but this wasn’t the game to start him off with. He’ll be long relief and possible loogy at times.

Wash is Wash

My feeling was that he didn’t want to bring in the rookie as long as the game was still winnable. But yeah, if this turns out to be indicative of how Wash is going to use Dutch in the future, I won’t be too happy.

My take on the Derek Holland callup

by LSJ on Apr 19, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

That is so not thinking dude.

Seriously, did you want him not to manage to win? Holland was brought up to be the long man, as was said when he was called up. I essentially think he is taking over for JJ, who has now moved into higher-leverage innings than he was originally targeted for.

I don't have a problem with doing it to win, especially not this game

I’m talking about in the future. I don’t really see the sense in having Holland in the bullpen if he’s just going to sit out there, which is what could happen if Wash is afraid to use him.

KH, do you have a link to Lewin/TAG's call of the walk-off?

I was at the game and was curious to see that.

I'm digging Jennings in the bullpen. Honestly thought he was done..

by Pocket Ninja on Apr 19, 2009 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

he has been tough

slider looks great, command looks great, mixes in the changeup, FB plays up because he commands it well and pitches backwards. I’ve been impressed.

If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.

So, maybe the scouts and JD were smart (but unlucky) in signing him last year?

He’s got decent back-of-the-rotation stuff, it’s just hard to predict when unhealthy guys will actually GET healthy

Young

Walk-off HR today.

.298/.389/.553 – through the first 12 games. Not a bad start for “a crappy offensive player.”

The gripe

was with his D. Not so much his offense.

Well, there are those of us who have also bemoaned his offensive decline the last two years

Me among them. But I’m happy to eat crow, especially if MY’s power has returned (that’s been my main gripe about his offense the last 2 years).

Of course, it’s worth noting he started out .315/.394/.468 last year, too, and his OPS was back down to 778 by the ASB…

So the fact that he is currently 4th in OPS at 3rd

is a surprise then?

Overall OPS at 3rd has fallen a little bit the last few years. HIs .899 right now qould have places him 4th last year as well.

by laxtonto on Apr 19, 2009 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm pleasantly suprised

I don’t think anyone had him pegged to be an above-average offensive force at 3B this year, at least not power-wise. Of course we’re only 12 games in, but seeing him putting up a 500+ SLG and a .209 ISO so far is a nice surprise.

by LSJ on Apr 19, 2009 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

If he's 4th in offense among third basemen at the end of the season, that will be a surprise, yes.

As far as the OPS dropping among third-basemen, it should be pointed out their EqA has stayed about the same. .273 in ‘06 and ’07 and .270 last year. .269 in 2005. So a lot of it is likely league-wide OPSes declining, because offensive output at third base hasn’t changed much at all.

(OPS in the AL has dropped five points a year from .766 to .756 the last three seasons, I didn’t check the NL and EqA is MLB scaled.)

by philkid3 on Apr 20, 2009 1:27 AM CDT up reply actions

well hes directly quoting AJM

and he was pretty bad last year… but with the finger stuff he gets (and perhaps deserves) a pass.

i’ve had a good feeling all season about young offensively though.. i’m liking the chances of back to the over 800 ops range for a year or two. which of course is not exactly world beating for a 3b in arlington, but none the less…

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Apr 19, 2009 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep...

I think he has looked pretty good at the plate so far this year.

It’s still really early, but I don’t remember him pulling the ball with much power at all last year. He has pulled 2 HR’s so far this year and had that one he hit in Detroit about 415 feet to dead center. That one he hit today was a bomb.

by slc ranger on Apr 19, 2009 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

It's rare I defend MY. .

. . . but I’ll still reinforce he was not bad last year. He was average on offense, arguably even a little bit better and probably not worse. Even with his shoddy defense, he was an above-average overall player last year.

Absolutely not worth his contract and not close to as good as a lot of his hype has been the last few years, but definitely not bad.
