Rangers release four

Evan Grant reports that the Rangers have released Casey Daigle, Kendy Batista, Grant Gerrard, and Josh Giles.

Batista is of some note, because there was some thought that he might be a sleeper pitching prospect.

How disappointing.

No Jenny Finch game day pictures. Ohh well, at least things will get a little NSFW when Kris Benson pitches.

I have a feeling that's going to get really old really quickly

Can we institute a mandatory “if you post a picture, you also have to type something in the subject line so we can click it and not see the picture anymore” rule?

Casey Daigle being released is...

a bigger loss than Catalanotto being released for this reason. I was hoping we could get Finch and Anna Benson sitting next to each other at a game.

How loaded is our farm system?

This loaded – a decent arm like Ben Henry will have to go to the Dominican complex to find innings because the Rangers’ extended Spring Training slots in AZ are all filled up. [per Jason Cole]

per Jason Cole
The Rangers drafted right-hander Ben Henry in the 30th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. Henry, a product of Loris High School in South Carolina, decided to sign with the Rangers, passing up an opportunity to play at Coastal Carolina University.
.
The vast majority of 30th round picks either don’t sign or don’t make it very far in baseball — but Henry isn’t the vast majority. The 19-year-old has an 88-90 mph fastball [sometimes a tick higher, sometimes a tick lower] and a big-breaking curveball that has plus potential. He’s also working on a changeup.
.
Henry is undoubtedly the Rangers’ most talented 30th rounder since the club stole Scott Feldman in the 2003 draft.
.
The hurler pitched with the rookie-level AZL Rangers last season, posting a 4.15 ERA in 39 innings. He yielded 42 hits, walked 25 and struck out 45.

6-4, 195 lbs pretty raw, probably will see some time in Hickory this year, or maybe Spokane.

by shroomer on Apr 2, 2009 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think...

Henry’s velo has actually been a little down this spring, and that’s one of the reasons he’s going to the Dominican to get it worked out. They want to get him as many innings as possible to try and get that velocity back up. He pitched well when I saw him in Surprise, and he was pitching off his fastball and working down in the zone more consistently than he has in the past. One of his issues thus far has been that his fastball is up in the zone too often.

Opening Day

if the ‘regular’ lineup doesn’t play opening day, i will be severely pissed off. Atleast give them (the regular starters… there’s only ONE freaking opening day) that…then go into your nonsense.

But, i will be okay with this if it takes ABs away from Murph, but once it starts taking ABs away from Davis, somebody going down…

Wash is actually a genius

He figured out that the cause of Jones’s epic decline was not age or weight or focus, but rather the fact that the Dodgers weren’t hitting him fourth for some reason. Torre really blew that one.

"I like hitting there," Jones said. "Even when he had all the big guys there like [Gary Sheffield] and Galarraga, I got to hit fourth when one of them was out of the game. I’d always come in the clubhouse and say ‘Look out, I’m going deep today. And mot of the time I’d end up hitting a home run. It’s a psyche thing there. I like it. "

given how progressive the Rangers are in every other facet of the game

it’s a shame we’re so effing backwards when it comes to on field management.

I used to not care as much about this stuff because I thought it had minimal effect on the outcomes of the games but batting one of your worst hitters 4th is a really really big deal.

concession changes at the ballpark this year

DMN BLOG

The ballpark is no longer offering Hebrew National dogs. They are using Sherrif Blaylock (it has nothing to do with Hank). As my boss, Barry Vigoda says, if it’s not Nathan’s, who cares which company it is? The new company is a local one and I tasted a dog today and thought it was pretty good. In fairness, it’s been too long since I had a Hebrew National dog, so I can’t really compare them.

• There are more beer options at the park this season. That’s always good news. In fact, a local company — Rahr & Sons — has come up with a beer that will only be sold at the ballpark. It’s called Texas Red and is a lager. A 24-ounce is $8.50. There are other Texas beers — some in bottles and some on draft — that can be purchased at various locations in the park. The 12-ounce bottles are $6.25.

• Fans can purchase beer (16 ounces) for $5 and bottled water (20 ounces) for $3. That’s cheaper than last season.

Someone needs to explain this to me.
Manager Ron Washington would prefer to keep Brandon McCarthy in the No. 4 spot so that he is facing an opponent’s fourth starter as often as possible.

Questions about who should be 3rd, 4th, etc. aside, how many weeks into the season does Wash really expect that timing to hold up? Teams don’t simply pitch 5 guys every 5 days for 6 months, it’s not quite that simple. That has to be the lamest reason to order your starters that I’ve ever heard.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Apr 2, 2009 11:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i bet it matches up more than you think

but I’ll let him think these things matter just because it’s not hurting anybody. There isn’t some other pressing reason that McCarthy should pitch 3rd instead of 4th if Wash actually thinks McCarthy isn’t as good as Benson

Supervisor

My friends and I had a joke in college that a supervisor was too lazy to work and not qualified to manage. I think the supervisor fits well. He makes sure everyone cleans up their dominos and playing cards etc before the game and than he hits the field in his pretty uni to supervise the game.

I have a better idea

Since most of our starters are terrible anyway, we should maximize our advantage whenever we can.

You know that Millwood doesn’t stand a chance when matched up against the likes of Lee, Sabathia, Beckett, Kazmir, Felix Hernandez, Lackey, Verlander, Halladay, etc, etc. So since we are going to lose anyway, why not invert the rotation and have the 5th starter match up with their ace, and match Millwood with their 5th starter? Padilla is probably slightly better than your normal 4th starter anyway, so we will have advantage in 2 of the 5 games and disadvantage in 2 other. Then, the balance hangs in the hands of the 3rd starters, and if we can get a good one of those ….

Hello .600 record!

by Telegraph on Apr 3, 2009 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you do better than that

A simple example:

Their Pitcher – Our Pitcher (ERA +’s)

1) 120 110
2) 100 90
3) 80 70
4) 60 50
5) 40 30

If the rotations just matched up, then you are always at a disadvantage. But what if, the matchups were:

1) 120 30
2) 100 110
3) 80 90
4) 60 70
5) 40 50

I guess you are not in as good a position if you are the Rangers and don’t match up quite as close as the other team. Still, seems pretty intuitive not to just always match up with the other team.

(of course, the caveat being the matchups aren’t so predictable)
