So as long as
the Rangers are in contention then Ron’ s job is safe. :(
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
this team won't be in contention
contending for the AL west… I seriously doubt it with ron washington as skipper of this team.
The Rangers striving to win in competition to win the AL west with Ron Washington as the leader will never happen. This team will not meet in fierce contention for first place this year as long as wishy wash is the skipper.

So… maybe they’ll be in contention contending for the American Chili Cookoff Championship? Or perhaps the American Beer Chugging Championship. Oh, wait, you’ve already locked up that title…

I wonder if these quotes are out there today
If Hillman doesn’t show the Rangers how you can manage worse than Wash has.

So, yeah, I've read all the griping about Wash's in-game tactics, particularly the bullpen.
And, I agree with Adam’s thought that it appears that Washington’s desire to manage by gut appears at times to be a euphemism for managing without thinking things through. BUT, Wash’s weird tactical decisions are relatively minor problems. As always, the Rangers’ playoff contention will live and die by the productivity of the pitching staff, which has had some bright spots — Millwood, BMac, frankfranKKKK, and Jennings — but really has been bad otherwise.
Management is going to be happy with Washington so long as the players play hard and the Rangers are sniffing contention. That’s really all there is to it, I think, from the perspective of management. So, I don’t think you should read Nolan’s comments and think that Nolan believes Wash is a great tactical manager. Basically, unless there is a massive crash and burn or players just don’t want to stay here because of the manager.
The Rangers find themselves in a situation wherein they have a manager that has the support of the players and they have gurus at pitching and hitting coach slots. I think management has to look no farther than the players themselves at this point.

For some reason, I couldn’t find the “because of the manager” to attach that to.

Washington weird tactical decisions
are far from minor. They are borter line pathetic. I’m getting sick and tired of people making excuses for Ron Washington. He was not the right hire and JD fucked this up.
JD is to blame. He should have never approved the hiring. Oh i remember back when they all had dinner at Hicks’ house and JD and Hicks said he’s such a great baseball guy. Well, look where this great baseball guy who never managed a baseball team ever has got this team.
It isn’t going to get better until he’s gone. And Nolan Ryan needs to wake the fuck up
Nolan must be pretty into 420
if he thinks Ron is doing fine as a manager….Or could it be possible that he means something entirely different when he says Ron is “fine”?

fair enough
just in listening to the two it seems Nolan is much more of a “fast tracker” with JD wanting the guys to spend a fair amount of time at each level. Obviously I have no idea but I also feel it was Nolan who wanted Adrus to start in the majors this year. I would think JD would have preferred keeping Andrus down a couple of weeks and protecting the extra service time.

My Guess
…and it’s only a guess…is that both men are probably flexible on things and collaborate on these decisions. I think it’s likely that neither of them want to see a repeat of 2008. Andrus starting the year up here could be due to that. The Holland call up, same thing. Stem the bleeding.

Fuck JD
that’s the problem with this team. JD and RW
JD has fucked up this Rangers starting pitching for years to come. All the major league starters he’s got rid off makes me hate everything he’s ever done
to that point
how can you fire the manager when the team sucks ass? it’s not like he’s torre running a field of all stars into the ground or anything…
owner = fail
gm = fail
president = ???
manager = fail
and how much does HSG being broke preclude the team from making any changes? you can’t pay for two managers (three if buck is still getting paid?) if you are broke.
by sam in so cal on Apr 21, 2009 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions
One would assume
they’d take an inhouse candidate to manage the rest of the year, if RW got the heave ho and they wanted to save money. That wouldn’t cost any extra.
"The idea that the Rangers are going to be a solid contender for a number of years is a fantasy." - Adam J. Morris
Interesting that
the Rangers brass comes out in support AFTER the walk-off win on Sunday. Sure seems like Washington was hanging by a thread before Sunday’s game. A loss on Sunday would have made the team 4-8 with a 7 game roadie (with the same dreadful attendance) and Halliday pitching on Tuesday.
Wonder if JD will once again proclaim himself to be “A Ron Washington Man” any time soon?
My thoughts all along have been that Washington was kept this year for a couple of reasons. They (Ranger brass) hoped against logic the team would get off to a better start and Tom Hicks did not want to pay for three managers this year. It is THAT simple.
While the Trey Hillman Story is still being written and any hack can throw tomatoes at him for moves within a game (he gets out of the 8th if his 1B doesn’t kick the ball Blalock hit to him), his team continues to make incremental improvements. They had a better record in 2008 than in 2007, finished last season on a decent roll (18-8) and are off to a good start this year.
I fully expect the KC Royals to finish right around or slightly above .500 this year.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
The double standard that you have with Washington and Hillman is funny
I suppose you think bringing in Kyle Farnsworth was a good move?

let it go please.....
It’s been nice and pleasant in here for almost two weeks…
Lots of great debate on both sides of all issues, but relatively little snarkiness, proving that it can be done if we don’t tread down obviously deadend paths.
I’ve retaken the pledge – come and join in.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
There's no double standard applied to Washington & Hillman.
Hillman goes into battle with a much shorter stick yet you can see where the Royals are improving while the Rangers continue to do what they’ve always done under Washington.
Yes, going to Farnsworth blew up in his face but Hillman’s team continues to make incremental steps of improvement.

Shorter stick?
That Meche guy you say the Rangers should have signed and Greinke gives Hillman a shorter stick? Really? No double standard, though.

I did mean to ask.
Which team has more talent on it, the KC Royals, or the Rangers.
"I Blame Mark Conner"
I think the Rangers have better every day
talent by several miles (especially with Gordon missing) but the Royals have better top end starting pitching (although Millwood has probably matched Meche this year), better weapons at the end of the bully and a much better defense.
Hillman is also a better manager than Washington which isn’t saying much but when comparing the two teams, it’s a decided edge to KC.

So
when are we going to begin seeing all these magic beans from the Tex trade begin to contribute to a major league team that consistently wins?
It’s real nice to have Baseball America say you have the best farm system in the game but does it really matter when the GM can’t make decisions that help the major league club win?
Just sayin.

Uhhhhh....
When exactly did Tex contribute to a Rangers team that consistently won? 2004 was nice, but it was one season (short sample size for “consistently wins”).
While the Ron Washington Story is still being written and any hack can throw tomatoes at him for moves within a game, his team continues to make incremental improvements. They had a better record in 2008 than in 2007, finished last season on a decent roll (.500 in the last month).
I fully expect the the Rangers to finish right around or slightly above .500 this year.
"I Blame Mark Conner"
The Rangers finished last season on a decent roll!?!?!?
After a 60-54 record, they went 19-29.
You’re bragging about them playing .500 in the last month yet from September 1-22 they had an 8-11 record !!
What we’re seeing this year from both KC and Texas is a continuation on how both teams finished 2008.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
by Josey Wales on Apr 21, 2009 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions
Your bragging about a manager who’s team ahas played at .500 or above exactly 18 games last year, and hasnt been above .500 since 4/19.
For the piss poor start that Wash’s team got off to last year, his team played at .500 or above 69 times last year, and were above .500 as late as 8/16.
btw, what was your final prediction on the Rangers record this year?
"I Blame Mark Conner"
Since we are playing small sample size
The Rangers also finished 4-1 after Sept 22…… Oh, that doesnt show a terrible record, so you ignored it, but made sure to tack on the 4 games losing streak which dropped them down to 11 losses….
"I Blame Mark Conner"
red3biggs...
I have the Rangers down for 73-89 this year and at this point I see no reason to waver from that number.
They finished the season poorly, didn’t make any additions (only subtractions) and brought back the same manager.
I also thought the Ms were going to be much better this year as well.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Thanks Josey, want to make sure i have you official one.
I still dont see the Rangers record regressing any, unless Millwood and Padilla both start throwing like crap again.
3 starts with, i assume, a game score above 50 by Millwood so far this season. That’s GOT to bold well.
"I Blame Mark Conner"
tball
Ed Coffin came in here wanting to bet me thousands of dollars claiming the Ms wouldn’t be within 10 games of the Rangers this year.
I merely said that if you looked at the Ms last year you would have seen a team that had everything go wrong yet they finished with a 67-95 pythag. That by itself made me think they were going to hover around 70 wins.
Factor in that Bedard, Washburn and Beltre are all playing for new contracts. Carlos Silva dropped 40-50 lbs. They brought in a new manager which is huge. They traded some of the dysfunction that was crippling the team last year plus they’re paying much more attention to their OF defense. I think Morrow is really good and said so before the season.
I thought the Ms had a nice chance to play with or pass the Rangers before the season (hence Ed Coffin demanding a wager with me). I need to see much more but I’m not going to be surprised if they finish above .500 which would make them a darkhorse to win the AL West.

I used to be mad about the MWC’s airport conference room deal to leave the Texas WAC schools (namely, my Rice Owls) with the likes of San Jose St, Fresno St., and Hawaii, but you know what? Until the BCS conferences cartel is broken (and Utah is the #1 hope of that happening), I’m cheering for every MWC school over any BCS school every day. Enough of this 2nd class football leagues nonsense.
