Got in right at the end of the game but was tracking it on the phone and saw that
I was very pleasantly surprised to see Fx2 come in when the fire was really burning instead of waiting until the ninth.
Good things happen when you stick with your best reliever
and don’t freak out about whether he’s available for tomorrow’s game.
This is the type of game the Rangers have to win. They’re not going to have many starts by giving up fewer than 5 runs.
I was watching on
MLB Extra Innings so I had to listen to Toronto’s crew and they were saying that it was a bad BP handling job to bring Francisco in at that point. Thier thinking was that if you are going to have him get a 5 out save, you might as well have brought him in to begin the 8th because that one extra out doesn’t make a big difference. I wanted to put the TV on mute after that.
yeah I heard them say that and thought it was dumb of them to say
It wasn’t like it was intended..the others just got into trouble that caused it.
I am stuck in a motel in El paso
How did BMac look?
Lots of fly ball outs
Good fastball location. Breaking ball wasn’t particularly good again, but he threw some pretty sweet changeups.

He went toe-to-toe with Roy Halladay
And held the offense that has scored the most runs in the AL so far this year to 3 runs over 6 innings. Nobody’s claiming he’s going to win any Cy Youngs… but what the fuck do you want from him?

sorry for your visceral reaction
to my opinion that he was average but that is indeed what I thought. I admit I’m hard on B-Mac but that’s what happens after trades, you get compared to who you got traded for. For example, it makes Hamilton’s horrid start easier to stomach seeing that Volquez has a 6 something ERA.
So are you saying that he was above average? I would say that “he did good for him”. That’s kind of a backhanded comment but the bottom line is that he was simply OK. And to be fair OK will win a lot of ballgames and is better than what he normally delivers.

By the abbreviated Quality Start standard
BMac had a good game. Six innings, 3 runs. Not that QS is a be-all end-all metric of any sort. He was benefitted by some pretty good plays. But he did the 6 inning thing, and if he continues to be healthy, maybe he can get 7 innings in (fewer full counts, more strikes).

I think the team will trust him a bit more to pitch that extra inning. He’s getting pulled now before the 100 pitch mark which is understandable given his injury past, but I’m hoping that he has that behind him now and can make it past that mark without having everyone hold their breath with every pitch.

Good times!
Get one of those close losses back. Beat one of the best pitchers in baseball on the road while starting a pitcher who’s been below replacement so far. And Wash showed good bullpen management.
And: Kinsler is still a monster.
So
In your baseball vocabulary, has “average” been forever stricken and replaced by “replacement”?
by brettgardner on Apr 21, 2009 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Like if you're average was 5
You could say replacement level was 0. So a player could be 1,2,3,4 and still be below average but above replacement.
Understood
And, admittedly, my understanding of the concept is a bit shaky, but wouldn’t “average” generally cluster around “replacement”?
by brettgardner on Apr 21, 2009 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions
There's "average" for major-league players...
“replacement” is any asshole off the street. Like in 1995 when they were going to start the season with replacement players… those players weren’t as good as the average major-leaguer.
Hmm
I thought “replacement” was this:
it’s the talent level for which you would pay the minimum salary on the open market, or for which you can obtain at minimal cost in a trade.
by brettgardner on Apr 21, 2009 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions
No.
A replacement level player is one you can find on the AAAA scrap heap. Not great, not suck, just essentially the bottom rung of league average production.
An average MLB player is much better.
"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
"you gonna lose your horse. seriously." FX2
Yes we can! November 04, 2008
The only position where it's particularly close is relief pitching.
But even then, there are quite a few players between the two levels.
Basically think of replacement as...
25th man on the roster level, or maybe the first call up or two level, while average would be somewhere in the starting lineup, maybe around 7th in the order.
Ron Washington...giving hope everywhere to the kids who eat lead paint chips of being a big league manager when they grow up since 2007.
Good description.
Of course, some teams are more stacked than others. Some teams’ 25th man is a lot better than a 25th man, and some teams 25th man is a lot worse.
Is there any doubt that this is
Kinsler’s team now? I don’t think so, but that’s just me.

No, but there is a theory
That has gone around for at least 25 years among the Arlington faithful – that the wave can be ignored by pitchers, but still affects them because it s harmonic changes the equilibrium of the universe. Everything tilts. So it’s OK to do the wave when an opposing pitcher is on the mound, but NOT when the home team is in the field.

I like the theater to be full if its action, comedy or whatever where the crowd can get into it.
definitely more fun to be at a full ballpark.

the movie,
a tragedy. The thought of myself in an empty theater seeing his latest offering, a comedy.
In all seriousness where the fuck did this guy come from and how did he come to dominate black entertainment in regards to tv and film.
His explosion onto the seen and subsequent dominance reminds me of Master P a decade ago in rap. Hopefully Perry’s run will have a similar ending to P’s.

I vastly prefer a pckaed, electric atmosphere at a game.
Though I’ll say this… if my choice is between 12,000-18,000 mostly disinterested casual fans who aren’t into the game (or, as I like to call it, “A weekday Rangers crowd”), or a mostly empty stadium with maybe 2,000 fans in the whole place, I’ll take the empty place, cause it does offer a certain sort of charm.
I was at a D-Rays game back when they sucked and I swear to god there weren’t 2k people in that whole cavernous place, and most of them were in the bar and/or the upper deck where seat were like one dollar. We walked right up to the gate an hour before game time and bought 9th row seat right behind homeplate for like $25. It was pretty awesome. If you yelled at a player, he’d turn around. Everyone could hear you. My buddy and I had a great time.
But that can’t compare to the awesomeness of being in a packed house and the electricity of 40-50k people all rooting and cheering toward a common goal.
I’d choose that every single time.

It's a double-edged sword.
It’s fun to be able to go sit just about anywhere and have plenty of room to stretch.
It’s not as fun of a crowd for yelling and cheering and stuff, though.

So, if we lose the next two games, how do you feel in the logical part of your brain after the fact?
Pretty good.
Of course, I didn’t think things were so bad when everyone else was on suicide watch either.

Well managed game by Wash
Nice to see him go out and try to win a game instead of letting the other team lose it. A victory today is worth much more than saving your closer for a potential save opportunity tomorrow.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
frankie could probably go tomorrow if hes really needed
hopefully we wont need him (in the good way)
and yes, this was the best managed game of the year.
i hope we get to see holland tomorrow… in the good kind of way (not down 10 in the 3rd).

this is best win of the season, not the best played game but certainly the toughest win.

Before tonight
Career 5.34 ERA against Rangers. Worst against an American League opponent and only a few NL teams are worse
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
And those 5 runs in 8 IP
will barely budge that ERA.
He’s had almost twice as many innings against the yankees, yet has given up fewer runs to them.
are the splits
relatively close or is this RBiA influenced.

his ERA is 5.68 because of an inning with a lot of soft hits and poor defense
he hasnt looked all that bad.
today a pitch 8 inches inside was floated softly into rf, oh my.
the preceding post was a great success.
I've been a bit hard on him it seems.
I just looked at his game log and other than the Detroit game, he’s been pretty good. I guess I was so pissed off at him for blowing Milly’s 4-run lead that my ill will hasn’t subsided. I’ll try and cut him some slack (though I still would have left Jennings in, given that he has been awesome so far this season).
Does "what" get old?
His BAbip or my bringing him up?
As for his future, I think he gets traded before 2011. They won’t extend him, he has value and they don’t want to pay him for his 3 arb year. By then he should be expendable anyhow.

Two main questions:
1. Is tomorrow THE day for Holland?
2. What in the world do we do with Dave Barnett?
II Cor. 4:17-18
About freaking time this team won a game
where they scored 3-5 runs.
First win of that kind this season and it only took 13 games.

man
Holland coming in for the first time in an away game in Toronto.
I’m getting Corey Lee flashbacks.
I use to love to hit, I use to take it serious. I only got one at bat a year, maybe...but, I took it serious. I hit 1.000 one year, if i had another at bat, I'd hit 2.000...
nevermind
i thought Lee came in against the BlueJays, but it was the yanks…
