I don't care, either

I mean, I care, but I care way more about Holland being generally awesome, and not getting the loss.

OK as much fun as that loss was I think we will see a couple roster moves tomorrow with Eyre being injured and our bullpen kinda shorthanded

Option Murphy to OKC and recall Boggs. Its only temporary to hopefully get Murph on track. But he needs everyday PT right now to get something going.

Eyre to 15 day DL and recall Madrigal or Mendoza

Things that go unlooked in this mess:
  • another unimpressive performance from Harrison
  • questionable steal in the ninth with Kinsler
  • didn’t see Feldman’s performance, but the game went from 5-3 to 7-3 on his watch

That's why I thought it'd be perfect to bring him in

They’re all ready down, there’s no pressure, so why go with Feldman again? If they wanted him to throw a certain number of pitches he could have gone back to the bullpen to finish his side.

That scenario is a hellva lot better than bringing Holland in with the bases loaded.

Wash is a dumbass.

Risking an out when there is no reason to risk an out is always questionable.

The runner was in scoring position with one out in a two run game. His steal of third improved the team’s chances very little. Had he been caught, it would have hurt their chances a ton. I don’t care if Kinsler’s the best base stealer in history, it was at the very least “questionable,” which is the operative term here. And it was probalby more thant that; it was probably “stupid.”

But it also worked out, wasn’t a big deal and Kinsler has been insane this whole year, so we should also be able to move on. That doesn’t mean defending it, though.

some comments

1. Not sold on O’Day. He just needs to let hitters pound that 85mph sinker into the ground. Stop throwing that hanging curveball.

2. Clock is ticking on Harrison. This loss is on him. He is lucky Benson went to the DL. He might be the odd man out when/if Benson returns.

3. Love seeing MY pull the ball with power. I don’t think he was happy with his UZR rating last week either.

4. Good to see Feldman come in and be effective. Bodes well for his start on Sat.

5. Good start by Holland. 93-95mph FB that hitters had trouble centering. Only complaint is that he got too much of the plate on some pitches.

I'm agnostic

If they want him to continue up here fine. If they feel he needs to go down fine. He’s not untalented. Just a matter of figuring out what works. But the whole point of this season was getting guys ready for next year. Well to do that Harrison needs to get the ball every five days regardless of the outcome at least for a little while longer.

It’s not as though Harrison has given up a bunch of bloopers and seeing eye ground balls. He is getting rocked. He cant miss bats and get jitters out when he is ahead in the count. When he is behind in the count, well…just close your eyes and pray. Basically he has no out pitch.

Was the gun fast though?

Harrison hitting 95 a couple times? Feldman hitting 95? CJ hitting 96 twice? Willie hitting 94? All of those guys might be capable of that, but was the gun fast or did they just all coincedentally(sp?) happen to be throwing their hardest that game?

Radar Gun

i’d say it was accurate based on hollands performance alone. The guy easily works his fastball in the mid 90s and cranks it up to 97 when needed.

So now that Holland has the debut under his belt...

Does he start getting more opportunities in close games where our starters only go 5 and some change? God knows we’ll get enough of those types of outings between Harrison, Feldman, Padilla, and McCarthy…

You brought the kid up to help you win games, I don’t wanna see him pitching strictly in games that may be outta reach…

And what kinda schedule would/should he be on? Obviously back-to-back days is probably a bad idea… But do you want him getting work every 2 or 3 games, or what?

by N41D on Apr 22, 2009 11:57 PM CDT reply actions

2-3 innings every three to four games is ideal. he needs to maintain his endurance because it is only a matter of time before he is in our rotation.

by RangerMad on Apr 23, 2009 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Matt Harrison and Scott Feldman

i thought about starting a new fanpost to discuss this, but i’ll try it here first. I haven’t been able to see these guys pitch yet in the regular season, but when i saw them each around the middle of ST, they looked much better than their results to date. What is Feldman doing this year that is so different than last year? His numbers indicate that he is longer getting groundballs like he used to. Would Harrison benefit from more time in AAA to figure out how to use his stuff more effectively, or does he simply not have the stuff to succeed? If Mendoza has one more effective start, is it time to start considering swapping these two out in the rotation? I still think Harrison has a chance, I just think he wasn’t given enough time in AAA ball last year and has been mostly pitching over his head since his call up.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Apr 22, 2009 11:59 PM CDT reply actions

Harrison

would benefit by learning to throw strikes and having his breaking ball be more consistent. The first batter of the game tonight was him in a nutshell. Get ahead 0-2 and then throw four straight balls to walk the hitter. He also doesn’t have any pitch that gets hitters to swing and miss, which is why he racks up ridiculous pitch counts.

by uthornfan on Apr 23, 2009 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

i really feel like

Harrison has enough stuff to succeed. he just doesn’t really seem to know how to pitch and to trust his stuff yet, as evidenced by the many at bats like you just described. he certainly doesn’t know how to put hitters away after he gets ahead, they seem to hit him just as well ahead or behind in the count. i really hope they let him work through this in AAA. I think it would hugely benefit him to work through this on a lesser stage where his mistakes aren’t always so costly so he can rebound and get deeper into games.

i just wish we had a better option to replace him in the big league rotation in the mean time.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Apr 23, 2009 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Mendoza

13 K in 10 IP with 6 BB

I wonder how many of those 13 Ks were swinging third strikes. If his sinker is getting guys to chase, then might as well go with the guy while he’s on a roll.

Six walks isn’t all that encouraging though

by oc on Apr 23, 2009 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah

i would feel much better if he could have two or three more starts in AAA before we think about calling him up. by the time he’s ready, we would probably just slide Holland in instead.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Apr 23, 2009 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

With Feldman

I think he’s just a better starter than reliever. Hopefully Saturday will be the first step to proving that.

Harrison definitely needs to go down to AAA. He’s not pitching with any confidence. At least not with what I saw.

Rock Flag & Eagle Radio: Thursdays 10 PM - 1 AM on FM 88.7 The Choice
"Computers can’t measure the size of a man’s heart."

by Maximilian on Apr 23, 2009 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

it is possible

that Feldman actually approaches pitching out of the bullpen with a different mentality. As a starter last year he was willing to let hitters hit him, even with our porous defense behind him. This year, in front of a much improved infield defense, he has been more of a strikeout/flyout guy and he has paid dearly for it. Where is the old Feldman?

As for Harrison, I did notice on on fangraph’s pitch fx that Harrison’s four seemer is 1.5 mph slower so far, and his change is 2 mph faster, which obviously makes them less effective pitches. he also is working his curve, slider and two seemer in much more than last year. it sounds like he is “experimenting” a bit, which is exactly what a talented young pitcher should do…in AAA.

I refuse to buy the "better starter than reliever" argument

He was mediocre last year as a starter and is mediocre reliever. He’s a mediocre pitcher. He’s not bad, probably above replacement, but certainly not league average. He’s just a typical Ranger pitcher. Why do people obsess over him so much?

by JBImaknee on Apr 23, 2009 2:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Personally

I subscribe to the theory that Wash simply left him out too ,long last year in games. A guy transitioning from 1-2 inning reliever shouldn’t be expected to go 6 innings right away. His ERA in the mid 3’s up until his last inning last year makes me feel better about my theory and hopefully he can come back and duplicate that this year and then work on having a better final inning.

Probably because

Mediocre starter looks head and shoulders better than what we are getting out of the back of the rotation at the moment. His performance as a starter has been on par with what we’ve seen from Padilla, and there are folks seriously trying to argue that he should be given his $12 M extension.

They can also send Harrison to AAA and it wouldn’t bother me. His nibbling drives me crazy. He needs to learn a couple pitches he can throw confidently for strikes.

Harrison and Young

He looks awful. It’s one thing for a young kid to struggle, but jeez, this is ugly. One more start like this and he gets a ticket to OKC.

Young – anyone else notice that he’s not just off to a good start, but is hitting the ball further than he has in the past two years? My hope was that, with him moving to 3B, he could bulk up and hit for more power again. If he can hit .300 with 20+HRs and 40+2Bs, he’ll more than hold his own at third.

On last night's postgame

Busby commented that Young had moved up a notch from the back of the box, and in toward the plate a couple of inches – to have a better chance at using some power. As we know, we’ve been suggesting (and even emailing Michael) to do exactly that, to get back where he was in the box in 2004 and 2005. So far, it’s working.

Other than occassional guys — like Mateo and Teixeira — I haven’t known anything about Rangers prospects until they’re called up. And as for the rest of baseball, I haven’t known anything about them until they’ve been awesome for a while in the Majors already.

And a look at ESPN’s story of the game today reminds me why. If you ctrl+f “holland,” it turns up absolutely nothing. Not one mention of one of the top prospects in baseball coming in and being awesome in his Major League debut.

Whatever, ESPN is obviously successful, so it has a reason for doing things the way it does. But I realize why I was even more brain dead when I relied on ESPN for my sports information.

The first season and about 2/3 of season 2 is the greatest sci-fi television I've ever seen.

But immediately after the Pegasus story arc the Sci-Fi channel made them do some standalone episodes that really sucked. And their attempt to get things back going with the New Caprica storyline was kinda stupid, until the rescue gave them an excuse for some really good battle scenes.

It picked back up after that though, IMO. At least until the very ending of the series finale. They fly into the Cylon home base, kick their ass and cause the evil head Cylon to cap himself, after which the fleet arrives at this virgin planet where they can finally make a new home… and then they decide to fly all their ships into the sun and go tribal. Sorry, but there’s no effing way I can buy that.

It’s still the best sci-fi show I’ve ever seen though. Completely owns all the Star Treks, Stargates and Dr. Who’s ever thrown out there.

Feldman

That first inning he pitched, I was blown away by his stuff. He had both of his darting 91-93 mph fastballs diving in opposite directions and was starting them out on the black at the knees, then they would dive to the batters back foot – unhittable and very tough pitches to take.

Then he came out for his second inning and those plus pitches disappeared and he was knocked around.

I’m not a Feldman homer, but I’ve seen him have spurts of stuff that is probably the best on the staff (pre Dutch). He has some really nice tools to work with.

they took it slow with him in ST and they are babying him a bit early in the season. He won’t pitch more than one inning and he won’t pitch in back to back games for right now.

It kinda sucks and it makes Worsh’s job more difficulet, but considering the results so far, by both Jennings and the rest of the pen, you can’t really complain about it too much.

Another bad start for Harrison

and either you option him, or you use him in the bullpen, and you can release Guardado and call up Diamond while placing Holland in the rotation. Feldman is in the rotation until Benson returns from the DL. If Feldman pitches well, we won’t need Benson returning from the DL.

The "Fire Wash Watch" is on. I say he's gone by April 26th.

by NothinG on Apr 23, 2009 9:18 AM CDT reply actions

Diamond

is hardly a better major league option than Harrison at this point, but as I have stated above, I agree that Harrison could greatly benefit from some more time in AAA. Dirkatron and I had a brief conversation yesterday regarding what it really means to “rush” a player. I think Harrison is a prime example of a pitchability guy, rather than a pure stuff guy, who needed more time in AAA, and yet he was rushed and it has only hurt him.

Looking at his pitch fx type and velocity shows that he is throwing at least five different pitches consistently, and that his change up, the most important pitch in the jump from AAA to “the show”, has seen a loss of about three mph in the delta between it and his four seem fastball.

I still think he can be an effective big league pitcher, he just needs more time to learn how to pitch, and AAA is a much more conducive environment in which to do so.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

i agree, he could definitely use more time

in AAA. Harrison, even when he gets ahead of hitters, and throws what would be his perfect pitch, the hitter will either foul it off or still rip it. I think you have said this, along with Tron, that he just doesn’t miss enough bats, and its not just the fact that he isn’t missing bats its the fact that he isn’t missing the sweet part of bats either. It’s frustrating to watch. I had high hopes for Harrison this year that he could be an innings eater.

The "Fire Wash Watch" is on. I say he's gone by April 26th.

wow, Holland!

I had the game on pause while I attended a 2 hour condo association meeting. came back to catch the beginning of the 5th inning, just hoping I’d see Dutch pitch. Did NOT expect to see him come in with the bases juiced. Did NOT expect to see him dominate the way he did. Did NOT expect we’d come back to tie the game and have a chance to win. Like others have said, this is the best I’ve ever felt after a loss.

amazing game. glad I got to see the kid pitch.
