Minor League Team to Dallas?
According to this article by the DMN, they say that there is a developer trying to build a stadium near the Trinity River by Southside on Lamar, along with a mixed use development:
Apparently, the goal is to have over 2,500 apartments, retail and a stadium. Question for you guys is: what team are they thinking of? The article doesn't mention anything, so is this all just speculation? I find it hard to believe that someone would build an urban stadium just in the hope that they could then lure a minor league team to Dallas... Any ideas?

Speculation on my part...
How are the Zephyrs doing in New Orleans? I keep hearing all of the economic issues the NOLA area is having, wondering if McDavid may try his hand at a minor league operation to get his feet wet moving towards a Rangers purchase down the road.

This whole thing doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Between Air Hogs, Rough Riders and Rangers, what exactly do they think is untapped?

The FW Cats as a model is probably perfect
You’d have a great natural rivalry between the two teams. And they wouldn’t compete for the same fans – I doubt anyone from Dallas drives to FW for Cats games, or vice versa for a Dallas indy team.
Makes sense to me. There is a market for neighborhood baseball in Dallas, particularly since there is no big name college program (sorry DBU) in Dallas either.

I'm actually wondering
if you could fit a whole League of 8 teams in a metropolis the size of DFW. I think you are right that they actually may have synergy with each other rather than competition, by setting up rivalries.

Tricer
made the comment yesterday that we could theoretically buy the BAK franchise and move it to TX where it could become a second AA team, which we could treat as a proving ground before jumping to Frisco. I have no idea if it would work, but it seems feasible.

Houston
They are trying to bring a minor league baseball team to Sugar Land, which is just outside of Houston. Here is an interesting quote from the article.
The Astros’ territorial rights cover Fort Bend County and Sugar Land, and a minor league team that was affiliated with a major league club could not be located there without the Astros’ approval.
For some reason this article is in PDF format.

they should put one in Montgomery County then
because the Woodlands/Conroe area is just as densely populated.

Good luck getting in even if you have that stuff
They won’t even let a Pizza guy up without calling the resident first.
Needless to say, I live in the same building. I want more stuff around here, and baseball would be a damn fine thing to have. I’ve never cared much for indie leagues, though, because the players suck. I’ll still watch, and it will draw because of its location and the view. It would be a nice experience. Light rail access, too.
This is, of course, where the Rangers should have built their park.

I work downtown, and if there was some way to move the Rangers AAA affiliation to a Dallas team, I’d definately have season tickets.

Is that artist’s rendition in any way accurate? There’s no outfield seats. Hard to imagine a AA or AAA moving to Dallas with so few seats.

Yeah, doubtful this would be AAA
Plus, the Rangers complex in OKC is pretty nice. It’s nearly impossible for me to believe them leaving that thing to go to that drawing.

I think there are outfield seats.
There’s a large “Concession” sign in centerfield so you have to figure there are seats. They are probably just out of sight from the angle shown.

It's big enough for AAA, I think.
Significantly bigger than Frisco when you look at all those infield seats + the boxes.

teams
If you read down in the article, you learn that:
Earlier this month, Bryant and Pierce’s Reunion Sports Group bought United League Baseball out of bankruptcy. The 3-year-old minor league has teams in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, San Angelo, the Rio Grande Valley and Alexandria, La.
Sounds like it was be an unaffiliated semi-pro squad.

I wonder
what kind of breakeven do you need for a minor league franchise? I assume you don’t draw more than a couple thousand average, right?

what do they pay their players?
Not much more than hundred bucks a game, right? Say you pay your roster $2000-3000 a game. Get 1,000 fans on average, paying $10 bucks, maybe averaging another $5 in profits from concessions, of course you only make money on home games…
Just a hugely different scale from regular ballclubs, but I could see how it’d be mildly profitable.

i have
been pushing the idea for a High A league for Texas for years. i don’t see how it couldn’t work. attendance would be a WHOLE lot better than Cal league. they draw squat. people have always said the travel. what the heck is the Texas league? corpus to midland to springfield and wichita. 8 teams in texas would work. could incorporate some of the teams in the United League these guys own.
Amarillo, San Angelo, 1 or two of the border teams, add the dallas team and a sugarland team, reintroduce an El Paso team and another someplace else and you have a better drawing league than the Cal.
by mo on Apr 23, 2009 9:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs

not as much
as Texas league. leave el paso out then. not bad for travel then.

The only way this makes sense is if Texas was willing to put our AAA team there.
And I think we’re pretty happy with OKC, though maybe I’m wrong there. You’d think having our team there would be a pretty important way to tap into the Oklahoma market, at least theoretically.
Unless I’m mistaken no other team would be allowed to put their AAA (or even AA) team right smack dab in the middle of our territory like that.
I know a lot of teams are liking the idea of putting their AAA teams right near their homes like this.
Atlanta abonded Richmond and built a team in freaking Gwynett. Gwynett sucks.
Nice looking stadium, though.

With AA, AAA, and the MLB teams all in the same area...
I wonder how much the team would save in logistics. A player promoted from AA to AAA can stay in the same housing, and calling players up from AAA wouldn’t require a plane flight. It would also be much easier for the roving coordinators and the front office to monitor prospects.
That said, it’s kinda ass-backwards to have a minor league team outside downtown Dallas and the major league team in Arlington (then again, I’m biased).
