I thought the pitching
minus Harrison was somewhat encouraging
true.
As long as blalock and some of the others keep swinging from the heels and try to pull everything, this offense will continue to struggle. At least Hamilton made an adjustment and tried to go oppo tonight. The other guys should try it.

kind of tough

for the most part
the SP has been at least serviceable. It is the offense which is really going bad. some need to adjust their approach like Hamilton did tonight.

Easy now.
Millwood has been great til tonight, when he was just good. McCarthy has been adequate
The other starters have been complete garbage this year.

which is an improvement over the past few years.

Great?
Not so fast. Even before tonight’s start THT had Millwood’s xFIP higher than last year’s mark, and he had left an insanely lucky 90% of his runners stranded on base. He was due for some coming back to earth. I think he looks better than last year, but not nearly by as much as his first 3 starts might seem to have indicated.

Meh.
Certainly pissed watching the game, but now that’s it’s over, all I feel is meh.
I was pretty sure the Blue Jays were a markedly better team even befor the season. 1/3 in Toronto is just about my expectancy, if not better. One loss was close, Holland was awesome, and we won a game against one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Not too bitter. All my bitterness is caried over from the Orioles and Royals series.
yeah, but...
you’ve gotta hate the discipline of our hitters. we made their 5th starter look like the ace because most of our lineup is swinging at pitches well out of the strikezone. Stop swinging at balls in the dirt, and make a pitcher work.
The "Fire Wash Watch" is on. I say he's gone by April 26th.
I do hate their discipline.
Though I still think the result is going to be above average at almost every position, so I’m not going to nitpick much.
They won't be even average
…if they continue to swing like they have. Blalock’s not even the worst culprit, although due to his ugly swing he looks the worst.
A disturbing number of this teams run production comes from the long ball, and sometimes it’s just not going to be there or in their case there’s never going to be anyone on base when they do go deep. The need to correct this issue sooner than later as most of the players are still young and can develop at least average plate discipline.
God help this team if they ever make it to the playoffs and have to face real starting pitching. They’ll make the 96-99 Rangers look like the 1927 Yankees. A massacre.
There’s little doubt that the Rangers offense will look great by the end of the season because they will feast off spare pitchers and hit in their friendly confines. Nights like the win against Halladay are going to be very, very rare.
I’d so much rather be watching a team that was getting ready to play with the big kids.

Do you watch the games or
look at the box scores?
The Rangers have scored more runs per game than any team in baseball. In those 15 games they’ve faced some guys that are pretty damn good – Greinke, Hallady, Lee, Carmona, Verlander – Gallaraga and Davies are good too. And one of their best hitters (Hamilton) is off to a crappy start.
Oh, and Blalock is the worst culprit – 1 walk in 57PAs – that is horrible.

All those regular season runs
don’t count for much in the postseason, which is Black Francis point. The 99 Rangers scored 945 runs during the regular season, and then scored 1 run in 3 games in the postseason.
By the way, happy 2 week anniversery to Josh Hamilton on his 2 week anniversery since his last walk.

Hambone looks a lot like 2007 Nellie Cruz right now
and Nellie Cruz looks a lot like 2008 Hambone.
It’s kinda wierd that one player would see his plate discipline completely evaporate and another on the same team has apparently refined his approach from horrible to outstanding.
If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???
surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.
Yeah, I don't know
if its just a fail cascade where you start failing, then get anxious and swing at everything to get out of the fail cascade.
4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.
Who cares about the postseason?
Aren’t we supposed to get there first before planning for what we’ll do in the postseason.

If this offense they’re putting up is for real, I take back saying they’ll have trouble finishing .500 just because of their schedule.

I wonder the same thing about Salty
If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???
surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.
Salty is at least making passable amount of contact
Davis and Teagarden are artificially inflating opposing pitcher’s FIPs
Not that Davis won't come around
But I knew that what we are seeing from him was within his spectrum of reasonable possibilities, but it is still tough to watch it.
If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

Yeah - they look a bit different
Salty seems to know what’s coming a lot of times, but swings through them
Davis is like a hermit crab – he just crawled out from under a rock
More than anything, I am happy now if I see Davis make more contact, regardless of the result of the AB. So far it’s not happening
the last couple games
Davis has hit the ball hard. He’ll strikeout out, but he is also a slow starter. I have much more confidence in Davis than Salty/Murphy at this point. Teagarden isn’t getting the playing time to get in a groove.
The "Fire Wash Watch" is on. I say he's gone by April 26th.
Oh, I am not worried at all when Davis actually hits the ball
the problem is that he doesn’t
at this moment
Who is? it’s a pretty short list at the moment.

Hitters With Most Swing & Misses in MLB
1. Josh Hamilton
2. Chris Davis
I use to love to hit, I use to take it serious. I only got one at bat a year, maybe...but, I took it serious. I hit 1.000 one year, if i had another at bat, I'd hit 2.000...
I don't have swing and miss totals. . .
But as far as contact rate, that’s available at FanGraphs. Davis is the worst, Salty is second, Cruz is 8th, Hamilton is 10th.
Cruz, though, is swinging at very, very little out of the zone.
Teabag
proving why salty starts and teabag sits the bench….bet a few r wishing laird was still here!!!!!
4 fing strikeouts….not acceptable on the major league level, especially when the bases r loaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also looks like Hamilton has a Cecil Fielder type hitch in his swing…..
The Ranger hitters don’t look very patient at the plate and at other times they self the bat on the shoulder when the bat should be swung.
Disappointing start to the season but I think I expect more of this team sooner than I should.
"bet a few r wishing laird was still here!!!!!"
Major league audition time for highly-touted catching prospects + Guillermo Moscoso?
Nope. Even if he was underrated.
well
I guess the argument could be made that Laird + Bowden > Salty + Moscoso

surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.
Also, I wonder if I'm the only person not disappointed by the season so far.
Actually, I’m a little pleasently surprised, if anything. Sure, losing a game — even if I expect them to lose — is obscenely frustratining. But, this team’s pythag going in to this game was .500, Cruz looks like he’s for real, Millwood has been awesome, Kinsler is showing that last year may not have been a career year, the bullpen has steadily gone from crappy crap to just crap, Elvis is handling The Show. . .
When I was expecting a team in the mid-70s in wins and worried a few of those things would be disasters, once I’m removed form the rage of the individual games, I’m not disappointed at all.*
*Now that I’ve removed my feelings from that opening series.
I predicted 76 wins
My defense mechanisms are state-of-the-art
yea we do need to keep it in perspective
they are building well for the future. The break-in off holland is just the beginning of the stud pitching prospects.
What we need to do is just keep getting more disciplined at the plate. If our young hitters know how to work a count, this will be the best lineup in the league for years to come.

Me: Not disappointed, not surprised.
Relieved might be the word: after all these years of Rangers fandom, I was worried coming into this season that it’d be the start of the Next Great Letdown, with sophomores, rookies, and prospects falling by the wayside left and right. All the upsides you point out above give me a bit more confidence that this thing is moving in the right direction. Still feels as if the whole thing’s rolling along on eggshells, but so far, so decent…
good question
why does he never get any heat? How many years has it been home run or K for most Ranger hitters? At least last year, some seemed to follow Milton’s lead and they were more consistent through the year than I can remember.

6-9 start this year is basically a
continuation of the 19-29 finish they had last year.
I think I mentioned their piss-poor finish last season as a big reason to be concerned with this season if Washington was brought back.
Tonight was an opportunity lost to build momentum.

id say the poor finish
could be pointed to injuries and a burnt out bullpen

I'd say it was baseball's cruel way of finally making
a market correction because last year’s team had a record waaaaaaaay over their skis in relation to how their pythag record said they were playing.
Even though they were actually 5 games over .500 actual they were 5-7 games under via pythag up until August.
Baseball can be a sonofabitch that way.

remember this from 2007
Washington wants the Rangers to be more selective at the plate, work the count, run more and not just sit back and wait for the big homer. A veteran lineup, most notably Mark Teixeira, has been reluctant to embrace change.
So the team will listen to and take thier lead from Milton Bradley but not thier manager Ron Washington. In 2007 they were 11th in OBP. 2008 they were 2nd. In 2009 they are currently 9th. Is there a problem here?
