Well, by the very nature of +/-, yes.

It, at its very base, is evaluating plays individually and seeing how often they get made. The new version also applies run values to every type of play (I want to get my hands on that).

UZR I believe does the same, but I don’t know UZR’s methodology too well.

And?

First of all that was an emotional response. That was very soon after the news broke about him requesting a trade.

Secondly, what is incorrect about those statements? He is on of the most over rated players to ever play for the Rangers. Doesn’t mean he sucks, but his reputation far exceeds his production.

And that whole scenario did expose him for not being quite the team first guy he’s made out to be. Not a terrible guy, but not the deity some elevate him to.

And there’s nothing hypocritical about enjoying the success of someone who you have a few issues with or feel is over rated.

So…again I ask….and?

CJ didn't give up a run though

A “vulture” is a pitcher who blows the lead, but then gets the win because his team scored the next inning.

Actually

There’s no hard and fast definition for a vulture win:

http://reconditebaseball.blogspot.com/2008/07/vulture-wins.html

In fact, you could say that it’d probably be more accurate to call CJ’s win a vulture win and call what Inkara describes as a blown win.

R

by Requiem on Apr 25, 2009 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I guess CJ's could be a "vulture win" under that guy's definition 1

But the thing is, even though he didn’t look great, he didn’t give up any runs. It makes more sense to me for a “vulture win” to be when a pitcher swoops in and steals it away from someone else… which is what I described in blowing the lead and yet being the pitcher of record when the team takes the lead again and goes on to win.

Joe Crede was the option we kept hearing about and he has been pretty terrible so far. If Andrus isn’t at SS, I doubt we would see any better offense from the left side of the IF and our defense would probably be much worse.

by Gdawg on Apr 25, 2009 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm still trying to figure out why people are saying this...

Zaun was still touching 3B when Elvis stopped the ball and Byrd was running up at the time and was about 20ft. away. Zaun would have had to hold up anyway ,or he would have been thrown out by 10ft. at the plate by Byrd. Elvis didn’t “make a play”, he just stopped a ball that was about to be picked up by Byrd anyway.

As a matter of fact, Zaun would have had a better chance of scoring with Andrus doing what he did. He was facing the wrong way, down on the ground, and not used to making that throw to home. Byrd would have been on his feet, momentum going towards home, and used to making that throw everyday in practice…..and not a rookie in a clutch situation as well.

Ian Kinsler..... yea, he's good at baseball.

by b.pate on Apr 25, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Zaun

the momentum he had going, he would have made it to the plate. Byrd wasnt as close to making a play as you may think.
If andrus doesnt stop that ball where he did, best case scenario its a close play at the plate.

No he's not...

Zaun was clearly heading for home and nearly ran into the 3B coach who got in front of him to stop him when he saw the ball didn’t go into the OF.

I don’t know if he would have been thrown out at the plate or not, but he was going to try and score.

And besides, who give a shit. The point is that the range Andrus showed just to get to that ball was something MY could only dream of.

Some help here

So, I’ve been busy this week, and am just now getting caught up on KSK.

One of their sex and football mailbag questions starts out thusly:

Probably like a lot of guys, I’ve queried my wife from time-to-time to gauge her interest in bringing in another girl

Really? “A lot of guys” ask their wife (or g.f., whomever) if they are down with bringing another girl into the equation?

Am I just a super-prude? Because I’m afraid if I even suggested that to my wife…I’m afraid to even contemplate what would happen. I’m pretty sure she would do something very unpleasant, though. I find it hard to believe that “a lot of guys” broach this.

If you are married to a tramp hooker, a closet dyke, or trailer park trash, it might be a question that comes up – or, alternately, if the question is the only thing that comes up, no further explanation needed. You know your woman well enough to not ask her. Some guys have girlfriends or wives that they know would be more open to that sort of thing.

It depends what we mean by "Gauge".

Are we talking, bring it up in the abstract as kind of a joke (but maybe not really) just to see how they react?

Or actually bringing up concrete scenarios to the see if they’ll agree?

Cause the first one, yah, sure.

The second one? No. I don’t think a lot of guys are like, “Hey, you know that new waitress at the little restaurant down the street. She kind of flirted with me yesterday. I think I could seal the deal. So… threesome?”

At least not guys in healthy relationships with non-emotional cripples for wives.

Or maybe I’m wrong and everyone is out there having crazy threesomes all the time.

Who knows.

I rarely sneak around my neighborhood and watch people have sex anymore… not after those fliers, anyhow. I don’t look like that when I scowl, fwiw.

OK, need some descriptive help here...

I was somewhere near San Antonio out of radio range…can someone describe the Andrus play and also what happened on the Byrd defensive gem?

II Cor. 4:17-18

by TedFord on Apr 24, 2009 9:41 PM CDT reply actions

plays

Andrus – kind of average hit grounder between 3b and ss, but perfectly placed. andrus has to run at an angle towards LF to try to cut it off, dives and barely stops it. thus it remains a one run game, great stop. it appeared he might have hurt his wrist, but there was no major bending or naything and he stayed in the game.

Byrd – just a routine pop-up in foul territory in LF that normally drops down, byrd covered a lot of ground and shoestringed it right before the wall. also some fan jumped out of the stands right before the ball landed for some reason, but it didn’t interfere.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Apr 24, 2009 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

one thing

the stop without an out was important because there had been runners at 1st and 2nd, the runner from second would have scored if it got past andrus, and then CJ (i think it was him at that point) got some popups to keep him there.

the preceding post was a great success.

Great defensive game...

The play by Byrd in the 9th, The stop by Andrus in the 8th. The play by MY with the spin and throw and Davis with the nice pick.

Kinsler got to a ball that some 2B don’t get to, but botched the flip which I though would come back to really hurt. Thankfully it didn’t.

I’m sure it was talked about in the GDT’s but nice to see Padilla’s velocity coming back as well. 93-95 with a lot of his fastballs. Although he was still 90-92 at times. So what does everyone think happened in his first few starts? Just took a while for him to get going? Dead arm?

Because you refuse to acknowledge that Young would have never had the chance to win the game

becasue he can’t make the plays at SS.

And so because Young is over rated, could garner no interest from other clubs to trade for him, and leaked the fact the club asked him to move to the media to try to get his why makes him a “team first” guy? He is not the leader of the team, not the face of the franchise, not the engine that drives this team. He is an older player realizing that you shut up and do what your told, because he does not have the pull he used to.

Good

I am not worried about the Mariners. It will definitely be an interesting series next week with OAK.

Amazing stat of the night

E Volquez gave 7 more batters a free pass tonight. He now has 20 base on balls in 20 innings.

Amazing

Davis has 27 strikeouts in

54 at bats. Thats obviously a K every other at bat. That surely is a feat that has never been accomplished over an entire season.

David Ortiz is second on the list with 20 K’s, but in 65 at bats. Davis is doing something truly epic right now.

You mean

that he did the first half the year. He was fairly mediocre the 2nd half of the year.

It wouldn’t bother me at all if his first half was a flash in the pan and he becomes a thoroughly mediocre pitcher.

So would all of us if he could have been had for a reasonable price.

That’s like saying you would’ve traded for Chad Billingsley or drafted Tim Lincecum.

There was this girl that use to stalk me.

Like, litterally considered-going-for-a-restraining-order stalked (eventually she cooled it).

Anyway, she worked at Orange Julius. And she was so creepy AND ugly (like two of me, but with tyranasaurus rex arms), I can’t go to OJ now and not feel uncomfortable.

So I just don’t go.

No. Not to me, anyhow. Not at that point in time, anyway.

I love the Grink, but keep in mind the only way they’d’ve dealt him was if he wasn’t amenable to an extension, and it’s not like we had the money available to get the other pieces we’d’ve needed to go with him to make a serious championship run this year.

The Rangers and Royals did have talks at the deadline

Kinda wonder… if something had happened, he probably wouldn’t have re-upped with us as quickly as he did in Kansas City.

But the fact that he did re-up in Kansas City tells me that he appreciates an organization that shows they care.

Could the Rangers have gotten him to sign an extension? I believe so.

Is anyone else bothered by this quote from Wash?

In response to not pinch hitting for CD against a leftie in the 8th:

“We discussed Andruw,” Washington said. “But Chris is going to be somebody we depend on. We’re trying to build his confidence. It almost cost us the game. You never know what Andruw would have done but I felt in my heart Chris deserved a chance.”

I’m all for building a players confidence, but not at the cost of a game. I want to win.

On the other hand, it says a lot for Wash that he would stick to his management style even when he’s gotta be feeling a lot of pressure to win as many games in April as possible.

by NorCalRangersFan on Apr 25, 2009 12:17 AM CDT reply actions

was he asked

why he didnt hit Jones for Andrus in the 9th?

in the field? yes

by red shoe ranger on Apr 25, 2009 12:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Here's my point.

If all you get is a tie in the top of the 9th and you used Vizquel then you still have Jones on the bench. But Jones should have been sent out for CD in the 8th w/ BL, and stayed in to play first.

by awillis111 on Apr 25, 2009 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions

fair enough,

but since your 8th inning scenario didnt play out I am just curious why he didnt hit Jones for Andrus in the 9th when you needed 1 run to tie it up.

starters wouldnt fit your quote above? Is the bench only for injuries?

Right now?

Young and Kinsler…No the bench isn’t only for injuries in the normal world, but you have to remember we are playing in Ron Washington’s Magical Kingdom.

by awillis111 on Apr 25, 2009 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions

No

He was asked why he didn’t pinch hit for Davis in the 8th with the bases load and two outs and Sherrill (a leftie) having been just brought in to face Davis. All the numbers say Wash should have pinch hit with Jones. Its why he’s on the team.

by NorCalRangersFan on Apr 25, 2009 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Andrus is actually doing better against lefies than righties his year

although it is a small sample size.

And he’s doing better than Davis any way you measure it.

by NorCalRangersFan on Apr 25, 2009 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm actually glad to hear that for Chris Davis' sake

Wash hasn’t much cared about “building confidence” with the young guys in the past. Winning games is nice, but first and foremost this should be a development year.

Strategically it was an unsound decision though – his use/nonuse of PH’s is becoming even more mystifying than his bullpen management.

I must get out of the plane, go to a nearby farmhouse - have a Dr Pepper - and call the police.

Normally I would agree with you Jon,

but part of the development has to include the management skills of RW

by awillis111 on Apr 25, 2009 1:22 AM CDT up reply actions

He knew what the smart decision there was

But the main goal of this year is to develop the young players for next year. Leaving Davis in the game was the right move.

I think Wash did get a direct vote of confidence from the front office because I don’t know if he makes that same move last week.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

This brings to my mind a quote:

“Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.”

Either you’re ok with Wash sitting the youngsters for veterans who could help more in the short term (aka Chris Davis) or you’re looking to know what you have and help develop the youngsters in the long term.

Basically, I’ve seen bitching on both sides and I’m not really sure it’s deserved.

Frankly, I still think 2010’s the target date, so I’m happy he stuck with Davis (though I also am not completely convinced that Davis can be the man at 1st as I would prefer that he show a better eye)….

Marlon Effin Byrd

busts his ass down the line to beat out that routine grounder to short, allowing a run to score. Dude is all out everytime I see him play. Padilla getting squeezed but guts it out into the seventh. Young playing stellar defense at 3rd and Davis picking anything thrown near him. way to pick us up mikey.
