OT: NFL Draft

Well, Matthew Stafford has reportedly signed with the Lions for the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history.  I have no problem with athletes making obscene amounts of money and  I think Stafford will be a pretty good QB in the league.  However, it just seems really weird to have a guy who hasn't played a down of pro football making more money than veteran guys who have been in Pro Bowls and won Super Bowls.  Listening to the commish on the radio yesterday though leads me to think that might be changing soon.

I think

We’ve gotten to the point that the free market can no longer be counted on to depress the salaries.

I don’t think a strict cap would be beneficial either, though, because it would eliminate any wiggle room teams at the top had to save some money.

The slotting system of baseball seems to be good, but maybe NFL could add a multiplier cap hit for every million over slot a team goes.

I kind of like the nba's system

of set dollar amount contracts per draft slot.

Full disclosure

When I saw that note on ESPN on my phone, I wondered the same thing.

Is it a salary difference for the two players, or an ability difference?

draft

the talent in this years draft is much worse than last year though, so if you had to pick a year not to have a 1st rounder to give money to this is the year.

Stafford

I’m actually kind of happy that he’s going first overall, because when I was playing football in high school he was just starting at Highland Park, and we went to their place and proceeded to get our asses handed to use by him.

So now later in life I can tell my kids that Stafford, who went number one, kick my team’s ass when I played against him in high school…….

I'm

not feeling the draft today at all. I could care less what happens. As long as Boldin doesn’t land in the NFC East I’ll be happy.

Ir seems only poetic to ignore the draft for the time of the game, and when its over, its 2nd round time and hopefully Jerry doesn’t blow another 2nd rd pick.

I need to take back what I said about the Nuggets.

I have been following them closely in this Hornets series and it hasn’t even been competitive.

Nobody other than Chris Paul looks like they belong on the floor right now. The way that Dahntay Jones is mushing him, I don’t see Paul getting off at any rate.

The Nuggets will be a tough out in this playoffs. A team that stacked that is clicking on all cylinders — it’s just too many weapons.

I think Stafford is going to struggle

Not just as a rookie, but as someone who doesn’t have a high completion percentage in college which does not translate to the pros. People fall in love with the big arm, but the window is smaller in the NFL. Give me someone who is more accurate.

The "Fire Wash Watch" is on. I say he's gone by April 26th.

in this draft is a far less than in previous years.

Stafford is not going to be a good NFL QB. Mark it down.

Predictions on draft picks is like any gamble

Anyone predict Roth in Pitts to be as good as he has been. If the team around them is developed the skys the limit on these guys. I still see the a few of these skilled Wr and Rb be the best in the draft. Crabtree seems like an Andre Johnson clone, that will need help before becoming a superstar.

Who else is pissed that Arizona

lowered the price on Boldin to a 2nd plus other considerations? Looks like we really got screwed on the RW deal.

by Agreen07 on Apr 25, 2009 10:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Jerry never learned lesson from Galloway trade

Wr developed within system is alot better than trading for one.

by gamerabcd on Apr 25, 2009 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

He never learned? That’s why we have Austin and/or Crayton slotted to start, with Hurd as a nice backup?

I can’t stand people who speak in such broad generalizations.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didnt say that Austin and Crayton arent good pickups

But to risk 1st and 3rd when the lions dont want you, and the league was down on a player. Rather, them invest in a WR in this years draft, where it is loaded with Wr, even a guy like Harvin would be the speed element missing from this team other than Felix Jones. The last time they developed a wr in first 4 rds was 2002 and Antonio Bryant.

by gamerabcd on Apr 25, 2009 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Harvin isn't even on the Cowboys draft board

Maybe 1 receiver from this class will give you more than Roy the next couple of years.

by tyd3311 on Apr 25, 2009 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus

Harvin isn’t good.

I’d take him in the 5th as a special teamer. Nothing else.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I only said Harvin since he is dropping

But no his off the field actions might sway the Cowboys from even thinking about him. But his speed is top of the line. His ability to catch and run with the ball was off the charts in Fl. But, this team needs a speed receiver, thats why I never liked the RW trade, we were getting a possession receiver when we have Clayton and Hurd doing same thing.

So it matters where they draft a guy?

I’d rather just get a good player, and the lower he comes, the better for us.

Believe me, you hope and pray that a guy like Barden or Nicks someday comes close to being Roy Williams.

You say “loaded” and I kindly point you to the high bust rate of wideouts.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The real question

Is did we make the right decision to trade down in ’07?

In other words, is Felix Jones more important than Dwayne Bowe?

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think so. Felix was a game changer

If he comes back playing like he did and stays healthy, wow.. him and Barber will make a very dynamic duo.

But if we were really looking at busts

How about drafting a TE 2 yrs in a row in 2nd rd no less. Thats what you call bad drafting. First one then in only package getting 4th rd pick.

by gamerabcd on Apr 25, 2009 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

We didn't do that.

Fasano was ’06, and Bennett ’08.

Fasano was a reach, and Bennett was absolute value.

One bad pick and one fantastic one.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ditto, but dont get why invest in a backup position with 2nd rd pick

Bennet though seems like a starter, but Fasano was destined to be backup.

by gamerabcd on Apr 25, 2009 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

The Parcells offense utilized a lot of two TE sets.

He wasn’t destined to be a backup, he just performed like one.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats what I would want for this team as well

Dont worry about fearing a position, but just draft best available.

by gamerabcd on Apr 25, 2009 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But then

You complain about taking a backup TE in the second round.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fasano wasnt the best available,

This was Parcells using his buddy system to draft.

by gamerabcd on Apr 25, 2009 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Same thing with Carpenter

Seemed more of a drafting based on personal relationships than true talent.

by gamerabcd on Apr 25, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bennett was a true 2nd value pick

If not 1st rd pick for his lack of stats in A&M. He never developed for my Aggies, with the lack of passing attack or quality Qbs.

by gamerabcd on Apr 25, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely.

They give guys grades and rank them, so why not pick based on that?

If some guy with a first round grade (like Bennett last year) falls to you at the bottom of the 2nd, you have to take regardless of position.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

but Boldin wants a new deal. Jones just built the stadium and I doubt all tix are sold (see new Yankee Stadium). Finances will be a concern with having to pay Ware, i imagine. From a straight-up football perspective it’s a no-brainer.

by Agreen07 on Apr 25, 2009 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No it's not.

I don’t get all this bitching about Boldin (BTW, red shoe ranger already bitched about this in this thread, so I’m not sure why you started a new rant).

Values are different at different times. Trading for a team’s nominal #1 in the middle of the season is just different than trading for a #2 on the edge of the draft. It’s no different than baseball, where a team can get squeezed at the trade deadline.

In any case, I wish Jerry had followed through on his desire in ’07 in to move up to the very top of the draft to draft Calvin Johnson, who is unbelievably amazing.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just don’t want to trade away our whole draft for two wide receivers.

We have pressing needs at NT, S, LB, and smaller needs at OT and WR.

Bad argument.

McCown and Warner are infinitely better than anybody Williams has had.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's hyperbole

Kitna threw for more than 4,000 yards in 2006 and 2007. McCown is not good.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

That it was a bit of hyperbole to say that McCown is “infinitely” better than Kitna. In fact, I don’t think he’s better than Kitna at all. So I retract that.

But the fact is McCown and Boldin only played together for a season and a half.

by brettgardner on Apr 25, 2009 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree Warner>Kitna

I also think Brady>Cassell but Wes welker had nearly the same statistical season reception and yardage wise this year and the year before..but I don’t think Brady and Cassell are equal. So I’m not sure how much QB talent has to do with it.

Pretty simple

though I understand that you’re just saying that you disagree on the players in relation to each other:

Boldin > Roy
2nd rd + ? < 1 rd + 3 rd – 5th rd

The Giants or Eagles will get more for less and the contracts will be pretty close.

As of now no

But I knew that he was going to get a lot of offers for college, and there were a lot of scouts there, yet he just blew off all of them and barely participated at all during the camp. Friend of mine was in the QB group that Stafford was in, and when other QBs were throwing, he heard him saying things like “Oh, that kid would be lucky just to get an offer….”

So I work at Mount Sinai hospital in New York,

making the website.

Yesterday a couple friends who write the internal newsletter said, hey, come see the big NFL prospects hang out in the sick kids’ ward at the hospital, we’re going to photograph it.

So we went over, and I hung out with about a dozen NFL first-rounders.

They did a closed-circuit call-in TV show for patients who couldn’t leave their rooms. Jason Smith came off as the best spoken. So long as he stays healthy he presents as impossible-to-fail NFL talent.

Later on Stafford and another one (I too am unversed on this year’s draft) played Guitar Hero and then the winner took on a little kid with a stent in who destroyed him.

It was cool, the players almost outnumbered the lay people in the room, just a small group of folks with this mob of young athletic celebrities talking to a couple kids. Right before it ended I talked to a guy from FOX Sports, and asked if Detroit was taking Stafford. He was flipping through his blackberry and said, “well, I’ll probably know before he does.” I think the guy was still playing Guitar Hero at that point.

I'll be interested to see what the Cowboys do.

Some people would say, “Oh, they don’t have a first rounder, it doesn’t matter.” But think about how savvy the Cowboys have been with later-round picks in their history.

Marion Barber was a fourth-rounder. Jay Ratliff was a seventh-rounder. Hell, I know it’s ancient history, but the Cowboys drafted Mel Renfro, Bullet Bob Hayes and Roger Staubach in one draft.

Should be interesting.
