FOTF's 9th Inning Heroics
I was listening to MLB on XM today, and a show had David Vincent on as a guest. Vincent is a member of SABR, works with Retrosheet, and is considered to be the preeminent authority on HR's. In fact, he coauthored this book (along with several others), which catalogs every HR ever hit since 1876. Vincent mentioned that MY is the only player ever to hit three 9th inning HR's over a 5 game span in which they either tied the game or gave his team the lead.

MY...
how great would it be to see him return to 20 HR type power? He’s off to a great start offensively and his defense seems to be improving every game. If he can play a solid 3B and hit .300 / .375 / .450 with 15-20 HR power I would be thrilled.
I really hate the term “clutch” too, but I really don’t know how else to explain what he has done the last week. Just a very nice, and much needed, start for MY after all his bitching this offseason about the move.

I swear the two bombs in Arlington
are 2 of the longest HR I have seen MY hit. I love it. If he can get back to 20 hr from the 9 -12 we had been getting that would be monumental. A possible return to the 200 hit club….

I give JD a lot of credit
Some around here think that I’m a detractor of his, but I will say that the early returns on his decision to move MY and promote Andrus have been just outstanding.
If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???
surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.

Better than expected so far
I’m sure they’ll both struggle at times, and Andrus is probably going to be lucky to hit .240 for the season, but this all bodes well for 2010 Face Odyssey.

Young
I was always a fan, and then a few years ago when everybody was acting like he was one of the best players in the game I started backing off. Last year’s hitting woes were mostly due to injury, I think. Not all of them. I think he’s hot right now and will probably end up with a year better than 08, but I certainly wouldn’t say he’s a “lock” to have 200 hits or whatever. I’d actually rather him sacrifice some of that and drive the ball more, resulting in a few more homers but a lot more doubles.
What I really like about Young is (and I’ve said this before), is that I think he’s going to make one hell of a third baseman. By the end of the season he could be the best Arlington has seen since Boo. Actually I said that wrong, I think he may not be as good as Buechelle with the glove (few are) but he’ll hit more, making him the better overall player.
I didn’t know what to think about Andrus at short so I was happy to see them sign Vizquel, but all that’s looking good right now. I’ve been wanting a Young move to 3rd for a long damn time.

He had 5 homeruns late into june last year.
I like the pace much better this year…
the preceding post was a great success.

And it's so much easier...
…to root for a classy person than a jerk. MY plays the game with honor and quietly does immense charity work. One good barometer of his character is the amount of respect he garners from other major leaguers.
So glad he’s off to a roaring start. Wish Josh were just as hot.

just saying
its an “interesting” jump in power.
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Hitting with no broken finger(s) will do that.

Shocking to me
how easily people overlook this.
Anybody who didn’t expect his power to correct has their head in the clouds.

The 70 PA?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

what about the fact that he has half as many HR in 70 PA than he had in 700 PA the last 2 years?
or 1/3rd the HR he had in 730 PA in 2006
…again, im just saying

Who knows
He may have altered his approach at the plate a little. He looks like he is pulling the ball a little more this year so he may be focusing more on power. Playing without 2 broken fingers has to help. Theres a numbers of possibilities as to why his power numbers are up so far

You must have missed all the Gregorian chants
About his retreat to the back of the box and away from the plate after his severe beaning. He needed to get closer to the dish, and a little more forward in the box, to stand where he set up in 2004-2005. He’s always had some moderate power, and his tendency to uppercut for the fences was corrected in his first year+ of work with Rudy. That took about three years to materialize, and it was lost after two years of nine-part zone coverage. He was still good at going the other way, and got bushels of hits even missing three or four sectors “in the red”. It was time to get back into a setup that allows better bat control in more areas of the strike zone.

It's not uncommon for players to have a bump year
of better production during their decline. This may be Young’s year, especially since health hurt his numbers last year.
