And don't get me wrong...Elvis is great and all.  But he needs to stop throwing the damn ball away in the 8th/9th inning.

I'm fine with Der-Hol working out of the 'pen in long relief 'till June or July.

I’ve long been a proponent of breaking in SP’s through the ’pen when the situation allows.

I know we’re on the Nolan Ryan Plan and so we can’t baby pitchers anymore, but this guy came into this year with one full pro season under his belt. I think breaking him in via 2-4 inning stints out of the ’pen for a few months is a great way to protect his arm a little bit.

by tricer on Apr 26, 2009 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm with Micah

(As usual) but wwith a twist. Even if a player sucks, that player is probably doing his best to do a good job. This is a bit of an unusual team, almost a fraternity compared to some clubhouses – on the surface and according to beat guys and staffers as well. One day we’ll be delighted at their band of brothers attitude.

When a player messes the nest, I try to figure why it happened and how he can “not do that” with whatever physical skills he has. If those skills are limite, I stop right there and accept less than perfection. If he has an outlier of a day, that’s baseball. If he just fails to be his normal self, I hope the kid doesn’t have an injury or family problem (or worse). So why be critical? Easy:
- when fixable things are not fixed
- when the kid gets impatient with himself and isn’t mentally tuned in
- but hopefully, never, just to be clever, sarcastic, or funny in a cruel way.

Respectfully,

it's not being an apologist to see the guy has talent

and he has shown it before. When he’s on and has his stuff he can be a very effective pitcher, but sometimes you get the bad cj with the good.

by rentz on Apr 26, 2009 5:09 AM CDT up reply actions

I understand the talent

But the amount of excuses people come up with to defend his bad outings is laughable. On a positive note, his has had good velocity his last couple of outings. Once he starts throwing his offspeed stuff for strikes consistently, he will start being effective again.

by octoberty on Apr 26, 2009 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

When people are suggesting he is literally a terrible pitcher who should not be in the major leagues

you can identify someone who thinks hes a decent middle reliever or good loogy as an apologist.

and undeniably bad defense in his two bad outings may be an excuse, but its still true.

the preceding post was a great success.

that was certainly a blow

there was a caveat to his struggles today and i think that needs to be stated

also, someone said earlier that Murphy shouldve had his and i agree…i dont know if he got a bad jump or what but it appeared to me that it was a ball that should be in a glove

by Horns130 on Apr 25, 2009 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions

when that ball

came off the bat, I was certain it was an out, thats how i usually judge whether he should have gotten it or not. Whether it was positioning or murphs route to the ball, he should have had that. I dont really care that he had to dive b/c he shouldnt have had to dive if he had gotten a better or jump

You can tell from watching television, shot through an enormous telephoto lens from centerfield, not knowing where the outfielder was positioned, what the wind was doing, and unaware of the spin on the ball? That’s pretty fucking incredible.

Erratic

It seemed like Holland was a bit erratic. I realize that something like 56% of his pitches were for strikes, but he did walk two batters. Moreover, it sounded like Holland would miss the strike zone badly on more than one occasion. Didn’t he also have some problems throwing first pitch strikes?

The Angels could actually be in trouble this year. Wow.

Also, on Ortega, I saw this little tidbit on him over at BTB:

Anthony Ortega isn’t fooling anyone. Ortega was named the Angel’s minor league pitcher of the year in 2008 thanks to 14 wins and a 3.52 ERA. His peripherals were not really outstanding and now batters are catching up with him…and how. Out of the 237 pitches he has thrown, only four have been for swinging strikes. He has a K/PA of 3%. Oh, and he has 15 earned runs in 13.2 innings. Owie.

yes

pile up as many angels losses as possible

the preceding post was a great success.

Angels need to lose

I like our chances against the Mariners a lot better than the Angels if they ever get healthy.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

was also thinking about this...

Let the M’s beat them and pile on the L’s early. They’ll regress, and the Angels can only get better w/ the return of Santana and Lackey.

Angels need to lose..Mariners will cool off.

and it’s def. not too early to be worrying about that

angels losing

we can always catch Seattle…only one thing has to happen of these two: either Felix or Bedard goes down with an injury, or Beltre doesn’t catch fire and carry the team on his back

Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.

Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.

Well that's what it should be...

If only we could collectively run the team from JD’s seat…. sigh…

Damn your rotator cuff Eric! Damn it!!

Btw, the SB Nation spellcheck on comments does not recognize rotator as a word. I find that odd for a sports blog site.

optimism

how good does this team look if Sheets looks healthy and signs with us, Holland moves into the rotation, and Feliz is brought up in a bullpen ace role?

Those are all reasonable possibilities right? Would that give us enough pitching to make things really interesting?

If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.

what, the teams that backed off of him for injuries then are going to be confident hes healthy now?
