NFL DRAFT DAY 2 (Where the Cowboys pick)
Ok, so its early, but this is a big day for cowboys fans, 12 picks! wow thats alot for a whole draft let alone for one day. Im excited to see how it turns out. If you think about it, we landed two very productive players in the 4th and 5th round last year and I think we can expect to get at least 4 or 5 guys who will produce for us next year in the draft, and who knows what we'll get out of today.
Here are the guys i want us to pick:
Rashad Johnson: I heard Mel say that if he was an inch or two taller he'd be in round one. He's a gamer, I love watching him... This is the type of player you take in the 2nd or third round and you make every one else look silly for putting too much weight on measurables.
Stephen McGee: Im a homer, I hope we take him in the 7th round. Im not sure if he'll do anything in the NFL, but the guy is a great dude, not a nicer guy or a better leader on the field. He played in about the worst situation a QB could play in in College, he ran the ball 30 times in one game. Franchione killed his college career, I hope he has success in the pros.
A WR, I dont care who, Mike Thomas of Arizona might be a good pick, but i have no clue really...
I havent looked at it hard enough to know who else i want.

Jets trade up
and take Shonn Green, good, solid back, could be productive, but it seems like a Tashard Choice look a like. They could have probably waited til later.
yikes, they gave up a 3, 4 and 7 to move up
Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.
Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.
Rams take
Bradley Fletcher out of Iowa… Never heard of him, sounds like both of these picks are letting guys like Johnson and the DT Gilbert to fall

I hope they take Rashad Johnson

it sounds
like a guy you take late in the draft as a project, but we took him in the 3rd. I hope he works out.

Well
Norm says this is about optimum position for Williams, so I’ll trust him on that.
The real problem is that we didn’t get a guy who should have gone in the 2nd.

true
In Norm i trust when it comes to the draft, he’s DFW’s Mel Kiper w/o the hair and slightly less spunk

Williams
ESPN/Scouts Inc’s board had him with a grade of 37, and ranked him as the 24th-best OLB prospect. That’s not very encouraging, especially when guys with grades in the 80s are still on the board.
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
Meh.
If he can play ST and rush the passer, that’s good enough for this year.
by brettgardner on Apr 26, 2009 9:39 AM CDT up reply actions
can you summarize
what Norm said about the guy? He was a LB that we are going to play at tackle?
If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???
surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.
OLB
rushes the passer well. Sounds like he balled in 1AA, set some records for forced fumbles. A little raw, but it sounds like the guy can definitely get after the QB

Norm and Todd Archer
Basically said this is right about where he should have gone, he projects to be a nickle package pass rusher who will play ST this year. Has a steep learning curve.

espn/scouts
they suck. The Mock draft Scouts had on the cowboys was utterly pathetic.
I use to love to hit, I use to take it serious. I only got one at bat a year, maybe...but, I took it serious. I hit 1.000 one year, if i had another at bat, I'd hit 2.000...
Stephen McGee sucks
His shoulder is shot and he can’t throw with any accuracy.
If you are wanting the Cowboys to pick an Aggie, just for the sake of having an Aggie, Goodson might make it as a return man/3rd down back, but I don’t think that is a big need for the Cowboys.
If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???
surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.
no, i just hope we take him
in the 7th round, I dont think he’ll be good in the pros, just a homer like any other fan of a school

okay, i'm starting to like this player more and more
Compares To: JAMES HARRISON, Pittsburgh — This is high praise for an unknown player, but the more film scouts watch on Williams, the more they will notice he has the “it” factor. With patient coaching and in the right system, he could turn into one of the better finds in this draft. He plays with excellent field vision and awareness. Williams demonstrates the instincts to quickly track down the ball. He has the change-of-direction agility and lateral movement to string plays wide and hits ballcarriers with force, driving with his legs to push the opponent back through the rush lane.
I use to love to hit, I use to take it serious. I only got one at bat a year, maybe...but, I took it serious. I hit 1.000 one year, if i had another at bat, I'd hit 2.000...
His physical size and tools

HAHA
true that… unreal how many quality picks they rack up. They’re smart about it too, they always get the absolute most value and are always trading into future drafts adding even more value. They are just run about 15 times better than most NFL orginizations with alot of stability. I kind of feel like JJ is doing a good job getting value out of the draft, just hope he picks the right players

Because blocking is an issue.
He played in that Missouri spread and was essentially a giant slot receiver. He can block, but he has very little experience blocking as part of the offensive line. He can be taught, of course, and that doesn’t change the fact that I have found myself commenting that he’s the best college football player I’ve ever seen (just watch the second half of Texas’ blowout of Mizzou).
I’m thinking the Chiefs are going to be all over him, especially since trading Tony G.
Seeking a new signature...
Pettigrew
is a freaking beast. That guy is awesome, an underrated athlete imo, he could make some plays with the ball in his hands. The big 12 was just flat loaded with good TEs over the last couple of seasons. Grisham will be a stud 1st rounder likely too

Coffman
stomped Texas in that game where Chase Daniel couldn’t get anything going.
That guy turned on beast mode and willed his way into the endzone.

Very one-dimensional.
But he’s a monster at that one dimension. He’s basically a really big slot receiver, and oh, he loves to jump over people. He’s going to make a team very, very happy.

I don't know anything about him
Other than what I’ve heard Norm and Archer say, and that link Longhorn posted. There’s also a Youtube video of him up that DMN linked to.
He sounded like a good enough guy on the radio—extremely nervous.

yes,
i dont think people understand how badly mishandled he was by Franchione and he never had a WR who could get open. The guy is about as tough as they come and has every chapter in the leadership hand book memorized…. It was amazing to see the guy have to run the ball 25+ times a game on some occasions, he was actually a FB more often than not.

Are you kidding?
You didn’t think using your first 6 picks in a draft on Sherman Williams, Shane Hannah, Kendall Watkins, Charlie Williams, Alundis Brice, and Eric Bjornsen, so you can have a backup RB, G, TE, a special teams guy, and then backup CB and TE, is a good thing?
Incidentally, I remember listening to Norm on KLIF when Charlie Williams was picked, and it was an amazing orgazmo-Norm moment. He was so excited the Cowboys picked a two-way player.

A couple of things in defense of McGee
if he ever gets coached properly to the point were he can actually use his pretty reasonable football skills, you wont find a tougher competitor… Seriously, this guy might be the toughest football player i’ve ever seen. He’s also a heck of a good guy. He’s smart and will work pretty frickin hard to get better
Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.
and honestly
i truely wont be suprised when during ST McGee starts asking if he can play Special teams, he’s that kind of dude.

Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.
I worry
that his great intangibles and controlled workouts way overinflated his status. He may have been mishandled…okay, he was mishandled, but the guys often couldn’t throw straight in games. And if the counter to that is that he was often hurt, how likely is a guy who couldn’t keep from getting banged up on college to stay on the field as a pro? His injuries were those kinds of injuries.
by Brett Perryman on Apr 26, 2009 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions
look at his
numbers his sophmore year, he had a great season, and was very accurate. He has the ability, and truely, he was mismanaged worse than any player i’ve ever season

The thing about McGee is...
…he came out of high school as a guy who put up big numbers in a pro style passing offense. And then got converted to an option-type QB in college. So he presumably has the skill set to be a pro-style QB.

Yes
honeslty, I really, really think people are underestimating how just flat out horrendous Frans offense was… It was the Wing T in a shotgun formation
Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.
Dear ESPN-
The reason Stephen McGee wasn’t good last year is not wholly due to injury. And when the intangibles are his best attribute…well…uhoh.
Seeking a new signature...
If he were healthy
I don’t think it would have been unreasonable to see him in the 2nd, which is pretty much what they said.

From NFL Draft Tracker
An undersized pass-rush specialist with the Beavers, Butler must make the transition to outside linebacker in the NFL. A standout pass rusher who broke out to register 10.5 sacks as a junior despite only starting one game, Butler was first-team All-Pac-10 and tied the single-season sack record at OSU with 12 as a senior and leaves second in school history with 25.5 career sacks. It was his final two games with the Beavers that really have scouts intrigued. Butler earned Sun Bowl MVP after racking up 11 tackles, including five tackles for loss, four sacks and a forced fumble against Pittsburgh and showed surprising fluidity when operating in coverage while at the East-West Shrine Game.

That makes me feel a little better- if draft analyses were based simply on ESPN’s grades, we’re having a horrible draft. Brandon Williams is the only player on Dallas’ list who even graded as high as a 70 on ESPN’s board.

How is this Kicker
Backup FB and backup Safety per DMN.
The Cowboys really are serious on special teams. They drafted USC kicker David Buehler with a compensatory fifth-round pick despite Nick Folk having a firm grip on the field goal aspect of the job.
Buehler made big news at the combine by putting up 25 bench press reps, more than some first-round offensive linemen.
He practiced at fullback and safety for the Trojans, so maybe Buehler can help the scout team, too. Would that justify using the 172nd overall pick on a kicker when you have a young Pro Bowl-caliber guy at the position?

Maybe it's because
Having two kickers is stupid.
If he can play ST or something in addition, however, I guess that’s OK.
by brettgardner on Apr 26, 2009 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions
He has enough strength for a offensive lineman
So maybe can be a solid K/Fb/S all around special teamer.
It may be stupid
but it’s obviously why they picked him. It’s not like there aren’t teams that keep two kickers every season. We’ll have to hear what they have to say, but I’d be kind of skeptical that he’s an NFL level guy in other spots. Of course he could kick off and run down and cover, hah.
by Brett Perryman on Apr 26, 2009 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions
They have plenty of bodies
They need guys who are better at it than those that they had last year, not just warm bodies.
The guy would have to be able to run and tackle like an NFL player to be of any value in that regard. I don’t know that he can’t, but I’d be pretty surprised.
by Brett Perryman on Apr 26, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Well
he apparently runs a 4.5. So may he can cover punts at least (and it would be great to see the kickoff guy be a part of the coverage).
by Brett Perryman on Apr 26, 2009 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Well
I bet he has an uphill climb on making the roster.
Of course, if he comes into training camp and boots everything into the endzone, I suppose that’s actually rather valuable.
by brettgardner on Apr 26, 2009 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions
That’s the point. He has a huge leg and does tend to boot kickoffs into the endzone. But with three kickers and a deep snapper you’re down to 41 non-specialists on any given day. Just a tough numbers game.

His injury is only reason he slipped this far.
Per DMN
Mickens (scouting report) had his stock drop at the Senior Bowl. He weighed in a 6-0, 176 pounds — 14 pounds under his listed weight — and experienced swelling in his knee. He had to skip the combine because of the knee, which caused him to miss the final three games of the regular season.
The Cowboys plan to use Smith at safety. Mickens, who had a school-record 14 interceptions in 47 starts, will stay at cornerback.
Mickens is a good value pick. Mike Mayock of the NFL Network graded him as an early fourth-round pick.
I'm kinda digging

CBS compares him to Daryn Colledge, and you know what? You could do a lot worse than that guy.

John Clayton's take
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft09/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=4102721
2. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t own the second day of the draft as billed. Armed at the start of Sunday with a dozen draft choices in the final five rounds, the Cowboys were caught reaching too many times. By comparison, the Chicago Bears had a much better second day.
Their picks were consistent and fit needs. Defensive ends Jarron Gilbert and Henry Melton have run the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds and will work with defensive line coach Rod Marinelli on the Bears’ pass rush. Safety D.J. Moore had received a higher grade than his third-round selection. The Bears added wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias, who was rated in the round he was selected. Most of the Cowboys’ picks were rated two or three rounds lower than their selections.
To be honest, I thought the Patriots won the day.
4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.
Figure you would post this.
Im glad most of the time, these people don’t have a clue what they’re talking about.
Generally more of a clue than
the Cowboys or their fans though.
4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.
The Cowboys?
Maybe thats why they don’t draft well. The only times this team drafted well was when Johnson or Parcells was here to knock some sense into the team, and maybe for a year or 2 after they left.
Other than that, the Cowboys have always been pretty crappy at drafting under Jones.
4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.
My money
is on the graders being right. They have a better track record than Jerrah.
4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.
They have a good feeling for the top 60 players or so
But after that, I would bet that there guess is as good as any.
Their first year after Parcells was a crappy draft.
But last year, they really put the work in and had an excellent draft, which is why I have hope that they actually do have a clue what they’re doing. I’m gonna judge this draft yet, though.. it’s pretty silly, if you ask me, to grade teams 3-7th round picks immediately following a draft. 1st-2nd rounders are probably a little bit easier to judge.
Cowboys never get props for draft picks other than when we have 2 1st rd picks
Hope some of these guys can make up for the amount of players lost this past offseason.
I do think they overvalued guys in the 3rd rd
And got value for guys 6th rd and 7th
it's funny
you swap what they got in the 4th and 5th with the guys in the 6th and 7th, it seems there wouldn’t be as much complaining…
I use to love to hit, I use to take it serious. I only got one at bat a year, maybe...but, I took it serious. I hit 1.000 one year, if i had another at bat, I'd hit 2.000...
I like this line from that blog
Most surprising move
I thought Jerry Jones was providing comic relief Sunday when he drafted a kicker in the fifth round. USC kicker David Buehler might be the best kicker in the draft, but the Cowboys just happen to have one of the top kickers in the league in Nick Folk. Did they actually want to create some competition in training camp? Honestly, this felt like a throwaway pick to me. Maybe the Cowboys think someone will get desperate before the season and trade a third-rounder for Buehler. But that’s a real stretch. Of all the baffling things that Jones did in this draft, put the Buehler pick at the top.
4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.
And he still hasn't figured it out
If that’s your favorite line, then this…
Maybe the Cowboys think someone will get desperate before the season and trade a third-rounder for Buehler.
… is my favorite line. How stupid. Yeah, i’m sure that’s what they think. Because so many teams in the past have traded high round picks for kickers, rookie kickers, right before the season started. It’s a thing called field position, and it’s pretty important in football.
Back in the days of the greatness of Jimmy Johnson
they would pick kickers off the scrap heap and coach them into useability. But that was back when they actually, you know, won playoff games.

If you have 12 picks in the last 4 rounds and you really really like a kicker
Why not? He chances of making an impact are probably greater than whatever else you’re going to take there.
Saying why not
followed by pissing away a draft pick did seem to be their plan on the second day.

The context being
that they traded away from quality picks to get a bunch of players that might help their practice squad.

i think he thought Folk was a bad pick as well
I use to love to hit, I use to take it serious. I only got one at bat a year, maybe...but, I took it serious. I hit 1.000 one year, if i had another at bat, I'd hit 2.000...
I don’t disagree with you on the value issue. And I was saying over the weekend that this feels a lot like the mid-late 90’s. But that point is separate from moron media folks who are too busy trying to make their blogs entertaining to at least correctly identify what is completely obvious, that they drafted the guy to kick off, not to compete with Nick Folk. It took about four minutes of explaining from Gosselin (although he kind of got off on the trade value thing too) after like 30 minutes of internal discussion for Norm to get it yesterday.
I think it was a dumb pick, but it has been painful to watch media types misevaluate the simple, obvious facts surrounding it.

Pennington
Is criminally underrated. If McGee ever came close to Pennington, I’d do cartwheels.

Rick Gosselin's Grade
C – After inexplicably opting out of the first day, the Cowboys finished strong with some solid second-day selections. Brewster gives the Cowboys insurance at guard and tackle. Hamlin, Mickens and Smith bolster the secondary.

How a team
identifies Unger, sees him get to within two picks, and allows that pick to be dealt for a 3rd and 4th when you have ten second day picks, including a high 3rd rounder and the first fouth rounder, is absolutely baffling. Use those picks to secure Unger, then do what you did and trade your pick to make your half round reach on Williams.
One thing I’m going to try to remind myself, however, is that, since they used their first rounder on Williams, they basically need about three picks to become nice, starter caliber players for this to be a good draft. There are going to be some busts (even for where they were picked), and they assured that one fifth rounder won’t be a starter real soon, but maybe they get a few players out of that group over time.

It seems to me
that the Cowboys are at a place where they need quality more than quantity. They are at the lip of the playoffs, they need to punch in for a good playoff run before they roll back to rebuilding. If anything, I assumed they’d be trading up instead of down.
I look at this draft class, and I’m not sure I see the 3 starters they picked up.
4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.
I’m biased toward quality over quantity, but I agree. Three really good players does more for this team than a slew of borderline NFLers.
But on the three starters, of course we don’t see them. If we saw them they probably would have been first or second rounders. Now, I do think that there is a difference between guys like Choice and Scandrick, who were regarded as value picks that day and who we were aleady excited about as a result, in the 4th and 5th rounds, than some of these guys who had 5th round grades from some but went 3rd/4th. But any of the three DBs have enough talent to be a good player, so I wouldn’t be stunned if one of them panned out like your Brock Marions and Scandricks. And I’m pretty underwhelmed by the Williamses and Butler, at least compared with the Cowboys, but it’s not like these guys sucked in college. They are just short. They were all very good players in college. I would not be surprised at all if one of them becomes a decent player. So if you hit on Brewster – and you probably should, since he was a mid-3rd – I don’t think that it’s impossible to imagine getting three players out of that group. It’s hard to point to exactly who right now, but that’s just a matter of picking so low. People don’t project 3rd, 4th, 5th rounders as starters the day after the draft.

3 starters from a draft class
you might want to add 25+ teams to that list.

uh no
this team needs quantity at this point, they have plenty of talented players, but 1 of those guys go down and they’re screwed b/c they have no depth. this draft was our chance to add some depth at places we’re thin (lb and the secondary and hopefully brewster can give us another good player on the o-line)

Some undrafted free agents signings
Quan Cosby – Bengals
Chase Daniel – Redskins
Graham Harrell – Browns (Good sign if you ask me, Scott Pioli.)
more 'reviews'
The Cowboys used their first pick to acquire Lions receiver Roy Williams and then proceeded to trade out of the second round, too. Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams should give them speed off the edge. Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee was a very good selection at the top of the fourth round. Remember, McGee ran 4.66 in the 40-yard dash. McGee is in a good situation. He’s a great worker and has solid pocket sense, but is missing that big-time NFL arm strength.
The Cowboys focused on defense with their picks and then used the 172nd pick on USC kicker David Buehler, who had better 40-yard times than teammate Rey Maualuga. But does Buehler beat out Nick Folk? TCU strong safety Stephen Hodge fills a need, but Cincinnati’s Mike Mickens was viewed as a third-round talent until needing cartilage and meniscus knee surgery after playing 46 games. Good value in the seventh round
Positive: Monster class size addressing multiple needs.
Negative: Secondary wasn’t addressed until fifth round.
Bottom line: C+. No picks in the first two rounds, but Dallas gets a solid grade on sheer size (12 picks). If even half the class makes the team, it adds solid depth. Linebacker Williams plays with some pop, and some personnel men had McGee tabbed as a potential sleeper.
