A poll about you and LSB
I had a discussion with one of the tech guys with SBN yesterday that gave me some interesting info I didn't have in terms of how some of the data -- particularly related to average visit time -- is calculated, and that revealed to me some of the inherent limitations in the tools we have to calculate how users use LSB.
So I've put together the poll below, that I'd like for folks to participate in so we can get a better handle on the user experience here. Hopefully, the options make sense -- if they aren't clear, please tell me in the comments.
Thanks.

I have it...
as one of my 3 home tabs so it always opens when I open IE. And it usually is up the whole time I am online.

I answered 3
But I’m kind of a hybrid between 2 and 3. If there isn’t a game going on, or a busy thread being updated regularly (like a minors thread) I’ll hit LSB, leave, and then check back in regularly. Like many, many times a day if I’m not staying.
But during a game or during any kind of busy discussion I leave it up in a tab.

yeah
I almost always have LSB open on a tab.

Tabs
Is a tab considered an individual window?
by gr7070 on Apr 27, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would think so
it’s just a different way of displaying a window

I'd think so, too.
I answered 3 based on the assumption that a tab counted as a window.

I answered 2
but I am also a hybrid between 2 and 3. So I think it balances.

and sometimes
for no explainable reasons, I have multiple LSB windows open, and open another one rather than tab to an existing one.

I often have more than one LSB window open
Sometimes it’s so I can read a story/diary without leaving the main page and other times I’m working on a comment/diary and need to research LSB comments/stories/diaries first.

But I’m also a hybrid of 2 and 3. I usually check the site 2-3 times during the day, and at least that many each evening. LSB is definitely one of the sites I visit the most.

You can prolly add one more category!
I use LSB as my default site when I open up my browser and then navigate away to other sites.

Odd questions
Would opening a bunch of internal stories into new tabs count as the first choice?
by rcreative on Apr 27, 2009 10:57 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I check in here a few times a day....
and stay here from an hour before a game…….all the way until about 30 minutes after a game. So that could be a period of up to almost 5 hours straight……which could count as just leaving a window open, i guess.

Do you have to be registered to vote?
If so, then you aren’t going to get many votes for the last couple of options. The poll will skew to the people who are registered and post, and won’t be representative of the full spectrum of users.

As a Firefox user...
…I use an extension called Morning Coffee, which tracks daily routine sites and opens them in tabs whenever you launch the browser. My Morning Coffee launches six tabs: Rock M Nation, Google Reader, Facebook, HS GameTime, ESPN and LoneStarBall.
So, I’m pretty much on it all day.

Here's a more appropriate poll for most of us
Are you on LSB site:
- Too much?
- Way too much?
- So much you hit the “c” or “z” keys on every other site?
- so much you bitch about every other site not having threaded comment replies?
- so much you’ve been threatened with divorce and/or unemployment?
- so much you sign your work emails with your LSB username?
- so much you haven’t actually slept in several days?

I have found myself hitting z on other site before

If we use tabs (rather than new windows) and almost always have LSB open in one of those tabs, how should we answer?

When I'm reading multiple Ranger stories
I usually have several tabs open to browse through LSB front-page stories/comments, as well as FanPosts and FanShots. If I only see one new story (on a second or third trip to the site, for instance), then I browse in just one tab.
I use the iGoogle homepage (I hate the stupid iWhatever phenomenon) so I don’t have to manage my bookmarks/RSS feeds between multiple computers, and have an LSB feed embedded there. I usually read story headlines from my other feeds and then browse here to check FanPost/FanShot comments and look for updates on Beyond the Box Score, Driveline Mechanics, or Defending Big D.

I have my RSS reader always open in one tab, and occasionally go to LSB to comment.
See above.

I clicked on almost always
Because it’s closest to the reality. LSB is not an automatic opener, but is fourth on the list of sites I tab open daily. Once open, I return to it fairly regularly to "keep up’. I also LSB as a launch center for other links of interest, both within posts and articles, and the static links to other AL West sites. Then return to LSB. There are times I close the LSB tab (and a couple of others) to isolate work on either my website or support for NMLR, and there are times I kill the browser totally to clean up my system. So I am on LSB daily except when gone from my apartment or traveling, and the window is usually an active tab but subject to being displaced when I need to isolate desktop resources.
Heh, and yes I’ve hit the ‘z’ key on other sites.

Comment Threads...
Are great on SB nation. I was just commenting on that today actually to my yankee fan buddy who posts on the LoHud site. Just not the same. It feels so 2007.

What the heck could "other" be?
You’ve never visited LSB and yet popped on to vote?

Some possibilities:
- I only sign into LSB to copy and paste comical material into email to my friends
- I don’t read LSB, I just like to steal the occasional lolcat pictures
- I’m a fan of another team and like to swipt links to good analytical articles
- I sign in once a day and read Josey Wales posts aloud in a Dale Gribble voice, to my dog.

LSB Suggestion
Adam is there a reason why you have it set that a link won’t open a new tab, but changes the current LSB tab to the linked one? If it matters I’d much prefer that it open a new tab up than to navigate away from lsb in the current tab.
Is that a website setting or can I actually change that myself in my explorer settings? I assume it’s per site, as it changes from site to site, but I guess it might not be that way???

I just hold "shift" before clicking on something
That way it opens in a new window.
