Josh Hamilton in pain, likely heading for the d.l.

T.R. Sullivan says that Josh Hamilton is in "extreme pain" and is likely heading to the disabled list.

This is troubling.

Is this an injury that was caused when he hit the wall in CF??

Or is it just wear and tear? I think i remember about the CF run in, but im not positive.

Hamilton sure looked like he was having trouble breathing the other night

maybe it was a cracked rib from his collision with the wall that got aggravated or broke when he was running the bases or sliding. He looked to be in severe pain and having difficulty breathing after he scored that run.

If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

Hope they would have caught that already

They did check for it at least once already, according to Jeff Wilson:
X-rays were negative

by mgb5 on Apr 28, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

X-rays

are not really sensitive for picking up nondisplaced rib fractures. Bone scans or CT are more sensitive, but not often done because pain from a rib sprain can be just as bad and last for 4-6 weeks. If Josh is hurting that bad, I will bet the DL stay will be closer to 30 days than 15.

Cartilage Swelling

Don’t remember the technical term for it, but I had a nasty crash between my sternum and someone’s head in a soccer game in high school. It hurt somewhat right after, but about a week after it became hard to even breathe. The doctor said it was irritation or swelling in the cartilage around the sternum that can flare up a week or so after a blunt force injury to the rib cage. It doesn’t show up on x-rays. I can’t imagine trying to run at any speed, much less swing a bat with it if he has something similar. It was about 4 weeks before I could run normally.

it makes sense

if he wasn’t snarling and Ron asked if he was good to go, and he said yes. it isn’t too smart of Josh, though, if he knew he was hurt.

I’ll trust that he hurt himself originally, felt he was OK, then aggravated it pretty badly after the pinch hitting sequence

That makes the most sense to me

First time he’d swung the bat in a game situation and then had to run to first in a game situation… that probably got it back started, and then his sequence running the bases before scoring.

In a way

I really hope it is just rib strain (painful connective tissues) and not anything worse. Scary.

Sure his .874 OPS in the 2nd half was lower than the .919 of the first half, but it seems like the idea he had a bad second half is more rooted in his dropoff in RBI rate than anything.

I'm not exaggerating

I saw him chasing a ball to the gap and just watching him run full speed, he reminded me of Carlos Lee. Not only slow, but also kinda clumsy and awkward. I remember it very clearly because it was so shocking to see it, but trust me that brief glimpse convinced me that he will never be a CF again.

I think he has only played one game in the field, so I don’t have much to base it on, but then again, there is probably a good reason why he has only played one game in the field.

Thats kind of kneejerk don't you think?

First lets wait and see what the exam shows before we decide he’s not worth a contract ext.

by awillis111 on Apr 28, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

oh you still give him a contract extension

but i would wait until the off season. i was against extending his contract before the season. don’t do it riding high on the good number he put up. see if he can repeat it.

This I agree with

but not because of one injury caused from good hard play

Cat vs Jones

even more reason to be happy they went with Jones

we can still go get cat

lol

Definitely a good call.

not really a tough call in my book

seeing as how they were trying to find a way to get rid of him the last year and found no takers

My favorite excuse

that I heard hear for keeping Cat was basicly that he sucked so much Wash wouldn’t be tempted to play him, so he was a better player to keep than Jones.

If Josh gets DL'd

could this be used as an excuse to bring up another BP arm for 10-15 days?

Say Diamond or Beau Jones (I know he’s not on 40-man).

those guys can't get AA/AAA hitters out

If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.

I meant Beau Vaughan

but how about B Gordon or J Hyatt

If you're throwing out the 40 man implications.

The best player in this situation to call up is Esteban German. Patient hitter, won’t be ruined with lack of PT, can play left field in an emergency, and can play the infield.

by Andy Seiler on Apr 28, 2009 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Doug Mathis is at OKC and pitching great

he is NOT on the 40 man roster, what would they have to do to bring him up?

He's not on our 40-man either

or Gabbard just the 40.1 man on our roster?

by awillis111 on Apr 28, 2009 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

gabbard is in boston

i’m not sure if you realized that

was weird

was watching the game on mute. saw “gabbard” on the mound. was like, “lsb totally missed this!!”

do like they did in the old days

trade hamilton to a team like the marlins for somebody with cash. when hammy is healthy trade back for him with some more cash.

I can live with this line up...

Interesting to see MY batting 3rd although Murphy isn’t in the line up. I thought Byrd had #5 locked down?
