Is this an injury that was caused when he hit the wall in CF??
Or is it just wear and tear? I think i remember about the CF run in, but im not positive.
Elvis has "shook up" Arlington!!
I broke a rib playing softball last summer
I was on the DL for a month. Season ending injury. Hard as hell to breath.

Hamilton sure looked like he was having trouble breathing the other night
maybe it was a cracked rib from his collision with the wall that got aggravated or broke when he was running the bases or sliding. He looked to be in severe pain and having difficulty breathing after he scored that run.
If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

Hope they would have caught that already
They did check for it at least once already, according to Jeff Wilson:
X-rays were negative
X-rays
are not really sensitive for picking up nondisplaced rib fractures. Bone scans or CT are more sensitive, but not often done because pain from a rib sprain can be just as bad and last for 4-6 weeks. If Josh is hurting that bad, I will bet the DL stay will be closer to 30 days than 15.
Cartilage Swelling
Don’t remember the technical term for it, but I had a nasty crash between my sternum and someone’s head in a soccer game in high school. It hurt somewhat right after, but about a week after it became hard to even breathe. The doctor said it was irritation or swelling in the cartilage around the sternum that can flare up a week or so after a blunt force injury to the rib cage. It doesn’t show up on x-rays. I can’t imagine trying to run at any speed, much less swing a bat with it if he has something similar. It was about 4 weeks before I could run normally.

No kidding
I have yet to read a description of his injury that really makes sense yet. What exactly is wrong? Do they even know?
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
it makes sense
if he wasn’t snarling and Ron asked if he was good to go, and he said yes. it isn’t too smart of Josh, though, if he knew he was hurt.
I’ll trust that he hurt himself originally, felt he was OK, then aggravated it pretty badly after the pinch hitting sequence

That makes the most sense to me
First time he’d swung the bat in a game situation and then had to run to first in a game situation… that probably got it back started, and then his sequence running the bases before scoring.
In a way
I really hope it is just rib strain (painful connective tissues) and not anything worse. Scary.

I just posted above about something similar that happened to me. 4 weeks before I could run hard, would probably be 6 weeks at a minimum to swing a bat comfortably, maybe more…. GULP….

not taking into consideration the 40
Golsons already on the 40 so there wouldn't have to be any maneuvering
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
isn't Borbon on the 40 too
Golson is not ready though

I agree
they both need more time. Boggs deserves to be in Arlington.

I'd like to see Borbon
so we can pinch run him and get his feet wet…only if it’s between Golson and he. If Boggs is good to go, go with him.

if we are looking for a full time CF
then why not see what Borbon can do? He’s hitting .300 down in OKC, just like he has everywhere else in his career. why not role with him in CF and Byrd and Cruz on the corners and let Murphy keep doing his thing as the 4th OF?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
6-8 weeks
is a fairly large portion of the season. I like Boggs and all, but I think Borbon brings more to the table. And if Borbon plays well, we can attempt to trade Byrd this summer to the many teams who could use him.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
6-8 weeks is quite an assumption at this point.
But still, I almost willing to bet that Golson is next in line after Boggs, right now.
actually
after thinking about it, it looks like we are set to face three lefties in this A’s series, so Boggs may make more sense in the short term. I would much rather have his bat in the lineup against lefties than Murphy’s.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
and why would Golson
be more in line than Borbon?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Because he's so hot right now, for 1
And Borbon still has some polishing to be done. I really just want Borbon to put it all together before before we pull the trigger.
i would think
Golson needs more polish than Borbon. Golson has yet to hit about 300 at any level while all Borbon has done was hit. His big knock is the fact that he doesn’t walk enough. I’ll take Borbon

He had a weak second half last year?
Sure his .874 OPS in the 2nd half was lower than the .919 of the first half, but it seems like the idea he had a bad second half is more rooted in his dropoff in RBI rate than anything.

i just can’t believe that. Carlos Lee is comically bad in the field. How could Jones drop so far so fast? How many times have you seen him in the field this year?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I'm not exaggerating
I saw him chasing a ball to the gap and just watching him run full speed, he reminded me of Carlos Lee. Not only slow, but also kinda clumsy and awkward. I remember it very clearly because it was so shocking to see it, but trust me that brief glimpse convinced me that he will never be a CF again.
I think he has only played one game in the field, so I don’t have much to base it on, but then again, there is probably a good reason why he has only played one game in the field.

he may be slow
but he was never really a true speedster even in his early years.. a lot of his OF play had to be in getting good jumps, good routes and all that… which shouldn’t fade.
the preceding post was a great success.
this is what i'm saying
maybe i’m trusting these defensive metrics too much but UZR rated him having a pretty good game (definitely above average). make what you want of that.

I know I'm guilty.
Been a pleasant surprise so far, to say the least. Doesn’t seem like he’ll be pulling veteran-rank, clamoring for playing time. And Wash hasn’t felt the need to bench anyone(i.e. Davis) to get him veteran time.

it is hard to argue with this
due to injuries, but we still have Cruz and our already crazy LF position. I suppose Byrd and Murphy could slot into CF for the interim until Borbon is ready. That’s leaving AJ out of the equation as well.

Boggs seems natural, especially since they need more of a bench guy than anything
but it is kind of interesting that Borbon is hitting the best of the group at the moment.
But does it have to be an outfielder?
We already have Murphy, Byrd, Cruz, and Jones, so what’s keeping us from bringing up someone like Duran if that player is just going to sit on the bench? Even Joaquin Arias. I’d rather Boggs get all the ABs he can while playing the outfield every day keeping his plus defense going.
Borbon
come on, it’s freaking Borbon…come on down.
Best way to offset his offense is to get thet best defensive CF out there, and that’s Borbon by a country mile…

I use to love to hit, I use to take it serious. I only got one at bat a year, maybe...but, I took it serious. I hit 1.000 one year, if i had another at bat, I'd hit 2.000...
i don't think the offsets work out
and even if hamilton wasn’t producing, his presence was enough.
if you just replaced jones’ bat with hamilton’s, shifted him to left and byrd to CF (who played extremely well there last year), you might be able to offset both much better
